Vincent Jackson update? (1 Viewer)

Benching Vjax once I pick him back up off waivers. T.O. and Nicks are ahead of him for WR 3. I like Vjax the next two weeks though. Nice matchups if he is for real and not going to fake an injury.

I'm wondering what kind of sneaky value Ajirotutu has this week???? I think if Jackson ends up sitting Seyi could be a very nice 1 week play.

i won't start him until i know he can play a full game...personally, i don't think he's faking the injury otherwise he'd try to make it last for the whole season and not rush back to play...

as an FYI: ahead of him is jennings and TO

I'm starting him but only above Marshall. Considering his YTD performance, his hamstring, weather in NY and Revis I was mostly just looking for any other option.

he was a free agent, i picked him up in case he he's back this week and could use him the last 2 weeks as a flex or insurance behind Roddy and Andre

I'm starting him. I think his injury was legit. He wants to remind everyone he is still an elite WR before he hits the market.

Im not falling for the this trap again. I will wait until he shows something on the field and gets through injury free. If he explodes so be it, but I would rather have him on my bench with 10-15 than 0-1-2-3 points in my lineup.

Damn. Gotta choose between him and Nicks. I know for a fact that VJax is starting, still don't know about Nicks. And now with Gates out, SD needs him.

Flipping coins.

Me too. I had Nicks in, but I'm behind in my matchup today and need for sure points. With Nicks still a question mark and nothing else as insurance for Monday on my roster, I put an active VJax in my lineup.

When your #3 WR options are as bad as some of us have...you just gotta roll the dice and hope he gets some targets in the red zone.

Looked healthy today. Game situation didn't require much passing after the first half. Started him, and will start him again thursday vs SF.

I plan on starting him as well for the next 2 weeks unless something comes up. His stats weren't all that great but he had a 37 yard reception that was called back for a borderline chop block that didn't affect the play. If that stands he would have led the team in reception yards. Rivers just didn't throw much and even when he did they were short passes to the RBs. He got the reverse on the first drive too so I see no reason to believe he's not healthy and a significant part of their game plan. As long as SF and CIN can keep the game close enough to keep SD passing I think VJax will have some good games.

I didnt get a chance to read any game logs but based on the last few posts, I assume V Jax played the whole game.
yes, didnt do a whole lot but with this being his first game back essentially I expected as much. He has some rust and he probably drew most of the attention with Gates out. I didnt watch the game actually so I am assuming that last part. But I did read he played the whole game.

Peruse any league’s transaction log and chances are Vincent Jackson’s(notes) name will pop up frequently. Drafted, dropped, reacquired, dismissed again and stashed one final time, he’s seemingly changed jerseys in virtual formats almost as many times as fellow Bolt J.T. O’Sullivan(notes) has in real-life.

Jackson’s nomadic existence in fantasy circles is understandable. His extensive holdout, suspension and, more recently, calf setbacks, have labeled the once-dependable commodity cumbersome. The necessity to fill bye week holes combined with owner desire to invest in new sources of production are the primary reasons why he’s become a vagabond.

However, for the person who currently owns the well-traveled receiver it could be a classic case of he who laughs last, laughs best.

Healthy and rounding into game shape, Jackson is on the verge of again seizing the spotlight. Though his final Week 14 fantasy line would be deemed uneventful by most, he occasionally flashed the skills of a receiver who finished with nearly 1,200 yards and nine scores a year ago. Showcasing considerable energy, elusiveness and explosion, he totaled 43 yards on three touches. Another 40-yard haul was wiped out by a questionable chop block by Jacob Hester(notes). The pep in his step was certainly encouraging.

The resurgent wideout could be a key component to owner Super Bowl berths this week.

Unlike most of his dinged teammates, particularly Antonio Gates(notes), Jackson is fresh and healthy. He’s also very hungry. With a full game under his belt, he should recapture the magic of '09 Thursday versus San Francisco.

Outside of his two unimpressive efforts against Indy and Oakland, Philip Rivers(notes) has bombarded opponents with regularity. As Yahoo!‘s own Michael Silver discussed Monday, his consistent execution despite a procession of ragtag receivers has been nothing short of masterful. Throw anyone into the fire and Rivers will maximize his potential. No quarterback has totaled more 20-yard pass plays this season. For the second straight year, he’s also averaged an absurd 8.8 yards per attempt, the highest mark in the league. Having his most dynamic receiver back in the mix, Rivers should unload on a Niners defense that’s surrendered its share of explosive pass plays, 40 to be exact (3.1 per game). It has also allowed a healthy 241 passing yards and 1.5 air strikes per game, equal to the 11th-most fantasy points. Given the Niners’ strength defending the run (3.5 ypc to RBs), Rivers will be pressed to throw early and often.

Entrusting a wideout with greenbacks on the line who has contributed minimally this season may seem like a futile exercise. Many would argue gifting your wife a Michael Myers-inspired anti-aging mask is a better idea (Giving a Peekaru, which is reminiscent of the stomach-emerging scene in Aliens, would be a close second). However, the Pro Bowl target’s remarkable athleticism and size advantage (6-foot-5) over Nate Clements(notes) (6-foot) and Shawntae Spencer(notes) (6-foot-1) give him a significant edge. Keep in mind San Fran has yielded the eighth-most fantasy points to WRs since Week 10.

Yes, Malcom Floyd(notes), who snagged two acrobatic TD catches in Week 14, will continue to play a significant role, but if Gates is indeed permanently unplugged – the tight end admitted Sunday he’s uncertain about finishing the season – No. 83 will garner a large workload, much bigger than the three targets he attracted versus Kansas City.

For those who’ve waited patiently for Jackson, this is the week their diligence will be rewarded.

Fearless Forecast: 5 receptions, 84 receiving yards, 1 touchdown, 14 fantasy points

He looked pretty good to me for his first game back, especially on that long catch that was called back even though it shouldn't have been. Even the announcers agreed on that. I feel safe enough starting him in my flex next week as I feel like he will be more incorporated into the game plan now. Just like us I'm sure the coaching staff needed to see a games worth of production to place added trust, I think he has earned that now and I will be rolling the dice.

How you all feeling about Thursday?

Who will Jackson draw for coverage? If you are starting him, who are you starting him over? Currently he is in over Harvin and Meachem on my squad (that is with KR points)

Is Chargers-Jackson situation worth salvaging?

By Tim Sullivan

With Vincent Jackson, the issue is not aptitude, but attitude. He is a gloriously gifted wide receiver, muscular and mobile, sure and strong.

RSS | Twitter | Bio, archive

He steps onto the football field and cornerbacks cringe. The issue is how to weigh what he does away from the field; more specifically, behind the wheel of an automobile.

The prodigal Pro Bowler returned to regular duty Sunday after a lengthy holdout, a league-mandated suspension, procedural payback from Chargers General Manager A.J. Smith and an injury. He had three third-down touches during the Bolts’ 31-0 blowout of Kansas City — two receptions and a reverse — and each of them resulted in a first down during a touchdown drive. He also made a fourth-quarter 37-yard catch that was wiped out by a penalty.

He reminded you of how much he has been missed and how hard he might be to replace. He made you wonder if his is a situation worth salvaging.

“I thought Vincent Jackson had a real impact on the game,” Chargers head coach Norv Turner said Monday. “We saw some great looks to run the ball when both our outside receivers were being doubled. It gives you some opportunities to run the ball that we haven’t seen.”

Turner’s statement was unprompted, but probably not unscripted. While Smith bears the responsibility for holding that (bottom) line on budgetary matters and affecting umbrage when Bolts appear on the police blotter, Turner is more tightly focused on the task immediately at hand. The coach’s job is to win games and influence players by almost any means available, including the extending of olive branches toward those egos bruised by his boss.

Largely unburdened by the financial implications of individual players’ contracts, Turner gets to play the nurturing mentor to Smith’s stern autocrat; the Robin Williams role in “Dead Poets Society.” It could be that Turner went out of his way to praise Jackson on Monday simply to cajole an important player who is closing fast on free agency. Yet there might also be another item on Turner’s agenda. Few coaches could see Jackson’s impact on Sunday’s game without trying to impress their superiors on the urgency of keeping such a player around.

Even in the absence of tight end Antonio Gates, aligning Jackson and Malcom Floyd on opposite flanks had the effect of forcing the Chiefs to deploy extra defenders in pass coverage and shifting their safeties so far from the line of scrimmage that they were rendered useless against the run. That the Chargers were able to generate a season-high 207 yards on the ground and that Floyd came open for a pair of touchdown receptions was at least partially attributable to Jackson’s presence.

“It’s hard to measure it, really,” Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers said Monday. “(But) I think there’s no doubt that with a healthy Malcom and Vincent out there, they’re worried about balls getting pushed upfield, and Vincent’s also such a great blocker in the running game. Definitely early, I felt like they were as deep as could be, the secondary and the safeties. …

“Watching it on tape, it happened more than I even realized, how many times they were dropping eight (defenders) and rushing three. … I don’t know if that’s in direct reaction to having Vincent out there, but certainly it’s a positive for us and a bonus any time you get a player of his caliber back.”

Not yet 28 years old, Jackson surpassed 1,000 receiving yards in both 2008 and 2009 and last season attained career highs with 68 catches, 1,167 yards and nine touchdowns. That the Chargers have nonetheless declined to discuss a long-term deal with Jackson is a reflection of a pair of DUI arrests, a subsequent stop for driving with a suspended license en route to January’s divisional playoff loss to the New York Jets and the poiseless penalty the player incurred for kicking a challenge flag that same day.

That pattern of bad behavior made it easier for the Chargers to resist risking a long-term commitment to Jackson, as did the escalating price of elite receivers. If the Chargers are to consider cutting a deal with Jackson comparable to the August extension signed by Houston’s Andre Johnson ($73.5 million over seven years), they ought to be able to expect a span of spotless character as collateral.

Though A.J. Smith did not immediately respond to an interview request Monday, there’s a deal to be made if the parties can put aside their past differences and see the mutual benefits of a shared future. Just as Jackson would be hard-pressed to find a quarterback who can get him the ball as reliably as Rivers, the Chargers have not found a lot of players who stretch the field simply by stepping onto it.

“He makes a big difference,” Chargers cornerback Antoine Cason said Monday. “For me as a corner, I enjoy going out to practice and seeing him just because I know I have to do everything right to cover him because he’s that good. … He catches the ball well, he runs good routes, he’s strong, physical. He just has everything you would want in a receiver.”

If Vincent Jackson can bring his attitude in line with his aptitude, he could be quite a catch.

The fact this game is on Thursday makes it a little more interesting. I am fortunate to have both Rivers and Vick and am leaning Rivers this week. I am tempted to play VJax over Marshall. Would hate to take a big swing and miss on Thursday. I'm sure I will agonize over this until game time and then make a frantic move. Let's just hope it is the right one.

The articles are making me lean VJax.

The articles are appreciated NCPanthers. Keep em coming.Just a gut feeling I guess but I say he goes off this week.
I may be starting him over Miles Austin this week. It's a matter of time I think since he's probably the most healthy WR in SD now, and he's the most explosive. SF can stop the run but could give up a big night to Rivers and his WR's.

What am I missing here?31-0 blowout, VJax goes 2/29/0 and Floyd gets the two scores? I'm thinking of starting Floyd next week.
This was Jackson's first complete game back. Expecting big numbers out of the gate isn't realistic. Floyd's big game will force defenses to key in on him more and not just double VJax like they would like to. That being said, the 49ers pass defense sucks, so starting VJax and/or Floyd looks like a good play. Personally, I see VJax lighting it up this week.P.S.- I own Floyd and VJax, and started Floyd week 14.

Starting Jackson over Sidney Rice with crossed fingers. Even though Rice is getting targets, Minny's offense is a mess right now.

Can someone in the know- tell me-- How many snaps was VJAX in for the last game? Was the the full time starter, or were they using him in certain situations? If he played the majority of snaps, that would be a great indication that he can put up some big #'s.

He was absolutely in there full-time. Problem was, they didn't need to throw much after halftime.

And if Alex Smith can't find a way to get the 49ers in the end zone a couple of times, we may well be looking at the same issue this week.

I own both as well, but Floyd's been doing it all year. I couldn't start VJax over Floyd, in the playoffs, when VJax has done nothing yet, and Floyd has done it almost every week he's in. But I heard Floyd got reinjured in the last game. Is that true?

I was hoping to put VJax into my lineup for the playoffs and was disappointed he was injured in his first game back leaving him little opportunity to regain a comfort level with Rivers or work his way into game shape.

I have to decide between Mike Williams against Detroit and Jackson. Williams has been consistent and the match-up may be too sweet to come off of him for Jackson, but it is tempting.

Have VJax in my lineup for this week with Maclin and Ward. Unfortunately for me, Collie, Manningham and Obomanu are all hurt and I have no choice but to play VJax. Hoping for a 5-7 catches and 80-100 yards and a TD.

I'm with you, I'm going to have to weigh the pros and cons of VJax over a couple of guys this week too... But at the end of the day, I don't know - I don't think I'll be able to pull the trigger on him. Just too much risk despite how good it all sounds. His ceiling might be higher than my current WR3 or Flex guy, but he could easily get another "leg cramp" and cost me my game. If he does well this week and my team advances he'll make a nice addition to the lineup for our Superbowl game. Right now though, I'll err towards using someone more reliable.

This is probably my main concern at the moment. I don't have stellar replacements (Harvin/Meachem) so the decision may be easier for me.Not really on topic but I also have Britt and I felt as if both games for both players were super promising considering the injuries. As a person waiting on week 15 I am glad we are at least in this position to be debating Vjax. Hell 7 days ago he was hitting the waiver wire like a concrete brick.

I'm starting VJ as my WR3 this week. Only other options are Donald Driver and D. Mason, so they all could be boom or bust but Jackson has potential.

Pretty sure I'm going to start him, just have to figure which two of Austin, S. Rice, S. Johnson, and Branch to pair with him...

I think he's healthy and due for a good game. Just a hunch.
