Headless corpses hang from bridges...cartels string up signs on city streets, openly recruiting soldiers...government officials routinely kidnapped and murdered...all this in our BORDER TOWNS. Why does the American government and media choose to ignore this?

Much like Afghanistan, this news has run its course. I think people have largely accepted what the situation is.

Um, maybe because it isn't happening in our BORDER TOWNS. Got any proof of those all those headless corpses hanging from bridges on this side of the border? Jan Brewer made that claim but when pressed had nothing to back it up with. There are atrocities like this happening in Mexico, but no documentation of numerous headless corpses in the US or of our government officials being routinely kidnapped and murdered.

There is violence on this side. It's not as widespread here, but it happens. Most people do not understand the socio-economic climate along our border. What is happening in Mexico has huge implications on BOTH sides of the border. One reason why the cartels don't bother to carry their war to our side is they don't have to. There is more contention getting drugs to the border than getting them across. Once across, our government largely leaves them alone.

They kill each other off and we take their land....If they do not kill each other off fast enough we take their land anyway. It is the american way.

Because most liberals are inherently racist and don't shine a spotlight on atrocities unless it dovetails with one of their pet interests. Sorta stupid on their part because all of this violence is actually a very compelling argument for legitimate shifts in immigration policy.

This is neither a Democratic or Republican issue these days. They did a great job with "Say No To Drugs" for decades. Such a good job that the average voter out there thinks the War on Drugs is a good thing.

Now, both parties are afraid to address the issue at the risk of losing votes.

There are probably lots of good and/or interesting reasons for why the violence in Mexico is being largely overlooked here. You, however, found none of them. Both sides are happy to ignore the problem.

I don't know why neither party has made it a campaign issue. The Hispanic voting bloc could carry an election.
Make it a campaign issue how? Say what?
You don't think that the violence along our border with Mexico is an issue in the Hispanic community? Hell yes, it is. If you had a candidate that would acknowledge the problem and propose to actually do something about it, they could carry the Hispanic vote. FYI: There are a helluva lot of Hispanics in this country now. Ignoring them is foolish.

They aren't Americans. Who gives a frig? Should Mexicans be concerned about every dingbat that goes postal in our country? Our BORDER TOWNS? Who cares? Are you concerned that they will start stringing up people in El Paso?

How about our liberal, peace loving, hippie leaders letting thousands of guns walk into the hands of Mexican drug lords, knowing all along that they will be used to rape, murder, and pillage....Your absolute ignorance on this topic is astounding.

I agree. Things were pretty peaceful before those guns ended up south of the border.

Because we're WINNING THE DRUG WAR!!!
It is a war we started. We are funding both sides. Not to mention, we are also at war with a large segment of our citizens. It is a mistake worse than Vietnam, yet we still haven't got the sense to end it.

For what it's worth, you should know that for every border town on our side, there is a sister city on the other side. The border is blurred, socially and economically. Hundreds of billions of dollars worth of commerce flow through the Texas Rio Grande Valley alone each year. Almost every major electronics company (Samsung, Sony, Mitsubishi, Panasonic), car makers (Chevy, Ford, Honda,Toyota), clothing companies (Hanes, Nike), etc. have distribution centers in the free trade zone in the RGV. Almost 1/3 of all overseas commerce coming from Asia goes through Mexico, because the Port of Long Beach is so congested. Kansas City Southern Railroad just completed a rail line from the Pacific Coast of Mexico to a containerized distribution center in Southeast Texas...I could go on and on. We are joined at the hip with Mexico, socially and economically. To ignore the situation there is akin to sticking your head in the sand. We have an interest in a safe and stable Mexico. I just don't understand why we don't do anything about the situation.

What do we do? Send in a UN peace keeping force?

Pretty fascinating article, IMHO, on the Mexican drug trade:

My link

Says the kingpin, El Chapo, sells more drugs today than Pablo Escobar did at the height of his career. I think my favorite quote from the article was "When Pablo Escobar was Chapo’s age, he had been dead for more than a decade."

Immense poverty and not a lot of alternatives to make money fuels the people producing the drugs plus rampant consumption from the fat cats to the North, not hard to figure out.

“Poor Mexico,” its former president Porfirio Díaz is said to have remarked. “So far from God and so close to the United States.”

Whenever one of these cartel guys gets busted I think of the movie "Traffic" and just assume the next big guy is already in place.
