Volek traded to SD (1 Viewer)

I'd still love to know what happened in Tennessee. There is NO WAY that he'd not better than Collins and Young.Everyone has seen him play. He actually looked real good a few times when McNair was out.
Kerry Collins is a former top 5 draft pick who has started for every team hes played for and has led a team to a Super Bowl. I'm not saying hes great, but hes not that terrible either.
You, my good man, have not been watching. He is absolutely horrible...and I'm not just talking bad, he's been completely inept.Just because someone was good at one time doesn't mean he should be starting now. Kerry Collins has set a new standard for suckitude. Interestingly enough, that may have been exactly the plan. :tinfoilhat:

Just saw this on RTSports -- it's listed as an AP story I'll post a link to the OG story if I can find it.

Fisher: Volek lied to him, repeatedly asked to be traded

2006-09-20 15:08

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -Coach Jeff Fisher lashed out at critics of the Tennessee Titans' dealings with Billy Volek, saying Wednesday that Volek lied to him and never took advantage of the opportunity to be the starter.

The Titans finally traded Volek on Tuesday to the San Diego Chargers for a sixth-round draft pick that could become a fifth-rounder depending on playing time. Fisher said Volek asked to be traded the day the Titans signed Kerry Collins late last month.

``I never at anytime in my career have gone into such detail (about a trade). But I felt the responsibility, as Billy felt he was thrown under the bus,'' Fisher said. ``Billy threw this organization under the bus, along with a number of his teammates.''

It was unprecedented public criticism by Fisher, who repeatedly has protected his players.

Volek inherited the quarterback job when the Titans traded Steve McNair to Baltimore in June, and Fisher claimed it was in the first week after Volek was made the starter during the offseason that the quarterback lied to the coach.

Fisher wouldn't say what the lie was.

Fans have been vehemently critical of the Titans for not giving Volek the chance to start the season, and the team is 0-2 with Collins as a starter.

Fisher said he met with Volek in his office Tuesday and was told the quarterback had no hard feelings.

Volek told several reporters on his way to the airport that he got a raw deal and didn't know why he went from starter to third-stringer before the season.
Sounds like an ugly divorce here. How bad a lie is it that gets you benched like that?edit: here is the link

I'm assuming Volek is being brought in to back up Rivers, not to supplant him. SD's existing backup was a pretty green player, IIRC, so Volek should be able to help avoid a meltdown in case of an injury to Rivers.

How is Volek with the SD offense? Does he have a history with any of the Chargers' offensive coaches?

Volek, at one time, had wanted to get moved to a team for which he could start. That didn't seem to work out.
No team would start Volek. If his own team brought in Collins, WTF would anyone consider him startable? This does not affect Rivers AT ALL.

The brass couldn't feel confident with the idea of Whitehurst leading them to the playoffs. But, I'm not sure Volek is the guy either.

Volek can do two things - hand off to LT, and throw to the big target, in this case, Gates.
2004 SeasonGames: 10 Attempts: 357 Completions: 218 Percentage: 61.1 Yards: 2486 TDs: 18 INTs: 10

Well I dont think he put up nearly 2,500 yards throwing to his TE
You're right, he's a pro-bowler.

I think Pete Prisco got this one right:

Billy Volek was sold a bunch of garbage by agent Drew Rosenhaus. He told the kid he'd get him a big contract as a starter after this season. When I talked to Volek during the preseason, he was convinced he would be the next Drew Brees, a starter who would be replaced by a younger passer only to move on to a big-money deal with another team. Wonder who put that in his head? As it turns out, Volek didn't start the opener for the Titans after a poor preseason and then was traded this week to the Chargers. So where is he now? He's backing up a young franchise quarterback in Philip Rivers. That big contract? It isn't coming. Moral of the story: Don't always believe what your agent tells you. ...
