Titans bench Young for tonight's game

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

Titans quarterback Vince Young will not play in tonight's game against the Washington Redskins at LP Field after violating a team rule.

“He will be on the sidelines tonight, and will practice this week and play next weekend at New England,’’ Coach Jeff Fisher said.

Fisher would not reveal the rule Young violated.

Veteran Kerry Collins will start for the Titans.

Kickoff is 7 p.m. on NFL Network, WUXP-30 and 103.3-FM

Being on the cover of Madden is enough to violate any team rule now. Considering that teams put language into contract that prevents them from doing anything hazardous to themselves. Seeign how every player on the Madden cover gets injured the year they are on it...VERY HAZARDOUS!!!

I would think that the punishment for breaking a team rule in the pre-season would be to PLAY the whole game. If the punishment is sitting out, I have to believe that more veterans will be screwing off.

Is this for fighting(really a push) with that guy that clocked Roby?
If it is, that's lame. I thought VY was the man for doing that, and I'd want a guy on my team standing up for his team mates. Vince certainly has balls.
you do realize the guy he pushed was his teammate too right?
Ha Ha, yes I did realize that. Standing up for your teammates may mean standing up to another teammate. If I want to protect kids at the local school, that may mean talking to the local bully that goes to that school. Just because I'm not standing up for the bully doesn't mean I'm not standing up for the kids at the school.

Huh?
For example, standing up to such terrible posts as this is standing up for the board members, even though Brewzers is a board member.

He stayed at his house instead of the team hotel.

Team rules require players with less than 4 years of experience to stay at the team hotel during training camp.

Sentence structure....you need to work on it.

Worthwhile posts... you need to work on them.

Apparently this wasn't the issue to cause him to miss the game but I disagree with you. I imagine the Titans(and all teams) have a rule about fighting with teammates not specifying any more than that. We're talking about the team's leader and best player, he needs to stay out of this stuff. There's much much much bigger guys that can do the fighting if something came up in a game. Players that the team can "grin and bear it" if they lose them and still carry on. They can't lose Vince and win.

Young sits in loss

Quarterback punished after breaking curfew

By JIM WYATT

Staff Writer

Vince Young has talked about being more of a leader in his second NFL season, yet when the Titans opened their preseason Saturday night, their quarterback wasn't in uniform.

Sidelined for violating a team rule, Young watched as the Washington Redskins beat the Titans 14-6 at LP Field.

Young broke curfew by spending Friday night at home instead of at the hotel where the team stays during camp. Players with less than four years experience are required to stay at the hotel.

As Young suffered the consequences of breaking a rule, so did the LP Field crowd that watched four quarters of dull football.

"I made a decision to not allow Vince to play in the ball game for violating a team rule, period. End of story,'' Coach Jeff Fisher said. "He will be back practicing Monday with his teammates. He is our starting quarterback and we like him. He is going to be a good quarterback. … I am done talking about it.''

Fisher said Young will start Friday's game at New England.

Young wouldn't discuss the situation. Leaving the locker room, he shook his head as he walked past a group of reporters.

"Vince wanted to be out there with us,'' running back LenDale White said. "But Jeff did what he felt he had to do.''

"He took it really hard, and not just when guys were around," defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth said. "But he has a lot on his shoulders. He has more on his shoulders than 52 other guys on this team. He made a mistake. He'll bounce back and be totally fine.''

Wearing a ball cap and holding a towel around his neck, Young chatted occasionally with teammates while watching quarterbacks Kerry Collins and Tim Rattay. Collins completed 10-of-17 passes for 79 yards in the first half. Rattay played the entire second half and went 13-of-21 for 123 yards.

The Titans got their only points from their kickers — a 41-yard field goal by Rob Bironas in the first half and a 39-yarder by John Vaughn in the second half.

The Redskins scored two touchdowns in the game's final 1:14, first on a 1-yard run by Marcus Mason and then 30 seconds later on a defensive fumble recovery in the end zone by Byron Westbrook.

'Has to be on the field'

Some Titans didn't want to discuss Young's situation, but those who did defended him. Most players said his absence likely had a lot to do with the early struggles on offense.

"For us to be successful he has to be on the field and I think he realizes that,'' veteran receiver Eric Moulds said.

Last season Young started a regular-season game against the Eagles after missing the team flight. He caught a later flight and made it to Philadelphia the night before the game.

Haynesworth was asked if the Titans were fortunate Young didn't break curfew before a regular-season game.

"I don't know if he would be sitting out in the regular season, to be honest,'' he said with a smile. "Those games are a little more important.''

Fisher isn't the type of guy to have one set of rules for the stars and another set for everyone else, so I was glad to see him hold firm here.

This does worry me a little bit about VY though. I never saw him as a prima-donna type, and I hope this isn't the start of him becoming one. "Rules, I don't have to follow no damn rules. I'm the franchise, and they need me more than I need them." kinda stuff.

Alot of teams have that rule and alot of players don't like it. It's like bunking up in summer camp only these are grown men doing it.

I think he showed more leadership when he went in to step up for his WR than if he would have done nothing.
