Wade Phillips Fired, Jason Garrett New Head Coach, According To Multiple Reports

The Dallas Cowboys have reportedly done this week what everyone expected them to do: Fire Wade Phillips. Bill Jones of CBS-11 in Dallas reports the Cowboys head coach was fired on Monday after his team suffered a humiliating 45-7 loss to the Packers on Sunday Night Football.

This move was expected by many as multiple reports surfaced following the game that Phillips was unlikely to make it through the week. Phillips' certainly deserved this fate after the Cowboys started the season 1-7.

Last week Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Phililps would remain on as head coach for the rest of the season but I'm not sure if others, Jones included, actually believed that at the time. Jones said after the Packers game that there would be people in the organization who suffered the consequences of failing so badly on expectations this year.

Offensive coordinator Jason Garrett will take his spot, according to the CBS-11 report. Garrett has been a head coaching candidate at multiple points in his career including interviews with the Broncos and Rams over the last two years. Garrett though is one of the NFL's highest paid assistants and plenty of people expected him to be the next Cowboys head coach.

Phillips ends his Cowboys career with a 34-22 in the regular season record as head coach. This is by far his most disappointing season as he won 13, 9 and 11 games in his first three seasons. He also walks away from Dallas with a 1-2 playoff record with the Cowboys.

No more opening games with Barber as runningback? Will Dez Bryant start over Roy? Who will start at RB now...Choice, Felix?

bump finley?

seriously though glad this happened...........

garret will be gone in the off season so he better enjoy his 8 game tryout

Surprised Garrett survived.
I suspect thats because Jerry is already paying him head coach salary and wants to see if he's the long term answer. Jerry doesnt want to have to pay more people during the possible lockout. So Jerry makes a change but doesnt add more cost. He gets to see if his long time targeted HC can work out with an 8 game trial run.

My guess is that Pasqualoni becomes the DC. He was Miami's DC last year. From various accounts, he's a no-nonsense, detail oriented coach whom the players respect.

I think we see more of Barber, less of Felix and Choice. More passing, even less running. It wouldn't surprise me to see Garrett call a game with ZERO run plays at all.

Why does anyone think anything on offense will change? Wasn't Garrett already the Assistant HC as well as the OC?

With Wade double dipping as HC and DC, I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he had nothing more than peripheral input, if that, on what was going on with the offense anyway.

I guess the question is will Garrett play OC and HC, or will he give playcalling duties over to Wilson or Peete?

Curious to hear if Garrett has anyone in particular he might feature/lean on in this offense.
Would it be that much different than what's been done so far? I have a hard time believeing it would be...
To clue you in, Barber opening up every game as the starter only so the team can punt the ball everytime was Wade's call. You basically lose a coin toss every game. Maybe Jason Garrett will call it differently now. Maybe the Cowboys can actually score first on an opening drive. Maybe Barber will continue to start the game who knows.

Not much has changed IMO as Garrett handles the offense and Wade the defense. With that being said, Garrett is very meticulous so his practices may reflect that. Wade didnt do alot of tackling or contact drills in practice so hopefully that will now change. The offense will continue to struggle untill Dallas gets an upgrade at O-line. They simply cannot block anyone right now and Garrett is only able to run a small percentage of his playbook.

It's a good move by Jerry.

If he would have waited until the end of the year, he'd fire Garrett too. Both have been awful.

This way Garrett gets a shot before he gets fired in 8 weeks. Unless the team doesn't something magical, he's gone too.

Wade is a great guy, but he's one of the dreaded "player's coach". Sorry those guys don't work. A buddy of time played under Gailey at Georgia Tech. He said Gailey told them they were all adults and expected them to act accordingly. But he let people get away with murder (murder at Georgia Tech means getting drunk/parties, murder at most SEC/ACC schools does indeed mean murder - LOL) and the team went down hill.

I'm not sure everyone needs to be Tom Coughlin, but you can't argue with the success.

Jason Garrett has always been a favorite of Jerry Jones. Felix (Arkansas alumni with Jerry Jones) could start the game now along with Dez Bryant who are also both Jerry Jones' favorite draft picks. We shall see.

Jeff Fisher has done well for himself as a 'players coach'.

These moves fascinate me when a guy gets promoted from within because, in theory at least, wasn't garrett already running the offense that is horrible and already doing his best job?

If the cowboys suddenly turn it on does that say that Garrett was dogging it? That the players were? I mean, I believe in motivation to a degree but how do the same people suddenly do a markedly improved job given the same tools and resources, etc? Isn't that answer usually "effort"?

I agree with Ridgelake's take on the WHY Jason Garrett. But I think if Jones really wanted to see a difference, it required more than just shoving a current staff member into the next rung up the ladder.

Both Schefter and Glazer tweeted that they could not confirm.
Lots of people on Twitter unable to confirm the report either. Todd Archer tweeted that spoke with Phillips' agent, who did not think report was true. And Dan Graziano tweeted that players/coaches have not been told anything....Sounds like report may be false, or premature.

Wade wanted Barber to remain the starter. He'd start, then barely get any touches. If Felix gets that first series, that really doesn't change much? He's looked awful too.Florida State does this with EVERYONE. It's the reason Antonio Cromartie really didn't start at FSU. The jr/sr always got the start, then they'd put in the best guy. So Cromartie played most of the game, but he didn't start. Putting the lack of offense on Barber is bull####. Felix has looked bad. Choice has been horrible. In 35 games they've had one 100 yard rusher. That's a combo of the RBs/Oline/OC/HC. I don't care who Garrett starts, the cowboys are a bad team. His offense stinks. Wade's defense stinks. The whole team is rotten at the core. But to mention how Barber starts when somehow he shouldn't, in terms of what's wrong with the Cowboys Barber is maybe number 200 on that list. Go fix 1-199 then get back to me.

More from Schefter:
"Now a Dallas coach is texting that if Wade Phillips has been fired, he and other assistants don't know it yet. "
Text from Cowboys player seconds ago: "No idea. We have a 3 p.m. (CT) meeting."

Are you ####### joking? His first stint in coaching was under Buddy Ryan. Fisher runs a tight ship. Fisher is old school. He doesn't pamper guys. He's very demanding. Just because he cares about his players doesn't mean he's a "player's coach". To lump Fisher's style in with Wade is a joke.

This had to happen. It's one thing to be competitive, play hard and get beat. Last night was a whole different story. When you have a lame duck as a coach players won't get fired up, are not as accountable, etc. Fans demanded change. He really had no choice.
