bigbottom - your PM box is full. Can you drop me a message re: your charity once you get yours cleared out a bit? Thanks.
Biggie - I think if you have information to share with all of us no one would object - I don't think Dodds of JB would mind either.

My problem with this challenge (and Livestrong bracelets and Komen red ribbons) is that I don't think the success of a charitable endeavor should be dependent on its branding. Because I think that leads to organizations like the Komen foundation putting more resources into the brand and less into the actual charitable endeavor in the first place. Now, I get that charities exist in competitive markets like everything else. I understand that United Way has been defined by their commercials and The Salvation Army by their buckets. But every once in a while something comes along that makes me think we've lost the balance.
Komen is a great example of how too much funding can cloud the vision of a charity.

There can be such a thing as too much money all in one spot.
I didn't want to distract from the good stuff in this thread but when someone mentioned that about taking dollars away from cancer research it did get me wondering if there's any organization that exists that tries to maximize saved lives by allocating dollars based on number of people who have a disease vs. how life-threatening it is, etc. I'm guessing no and that it would be impossible to determine an accurate algorithm to put those dollars to best use. I'm not sure if it would be a bad thing for donations but it would be interesting to see some type of graph that showed which disease got the most per avg. yearly deaths, etc.

One other question I had - when they do finally find a cure for a disease, what typically happens with the other funds - do they go to another charity?

Biggie - I'm going to match Yankee23Fan's $100. I'll send it to you in November so you can add it to your launch event total.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! We will be doing a fundraising drive immediately following the launch event - will get you the info then.

I wanted to send this via PM but your inbox is full.

Hi Biggie - do you have a PayPal account for your new charity? I'd like to send you guys a donation.

I still think about you and Chance often - God bless.
Thank you very much. Yes, we have a Paypal account. I'll be happy to share the link with you early next week, and would be extremely appreciative of any donation you might consider. We don't officially launch until November and we haven't finished all our materials, website info, etc. But we have filed all our paperwork, opened a bank account, developed a mission statement and designed a logo. We are also doing a small prelaunch fundraiser to give Target gift cards (and other goodies) to children undergoing inpatient chemo treatments at Texas Children's Hospital. We've billed it as a gift card drive for back to school supplies (many of the kids keep up with school, but have to do it from their hospital beds) but the children and their families can use the gift cards for whatever (they are from Target). We asked people to donate $5 gift cards (or $5 cash and we'll purchase the cards). We an to bundle several gift cards along with cookies and other goodies and deliver them to the patient rooms on the chemo floor. The drive runs through the end of this week and we've already raised much more than our budgeted goal. That is why I'm asking that any donations be made after this week - those funds will then be used for one of our other initiatives (research funding, housing, other ancillary services). We will definitely keep everyone posted. Many thanks!!!

Was able to clear out a bit of room. Thanks.
gave you a bigger box (by request of Disco Stu).
Many thanks Rud. There are so many incredibly thoughtful and meaningful messages in there, and I have trouble deleting them. That's why my box is always full.

If you go to the bottom of the page on any conversation, there's an "Archive Conversation" button. It will send the entire conversation to you as an email at the email address you provided to the site.

Such analysis is at right at the intersection of altruism and pharmaceutical greed. When I used to work in pharma business development, we would frequently look at disease incidence, prevalence, quality of life, mortality etc.

On semi-related note, I was at a confernce where Susan Komen spoke. She admitted that they sometimes got carried away by the statistics and there was a competitive nature to be working on the "biggest cancer". By the fact that she mentioned that, there is some element of truth to what someone brought up earlier that the brand is bigger than the cause. There also is some hope that their awareness of this can redirect efforts back toward legitimate cures. (This is why I probably sub-consciously loathe these type of ice bucket stunts, pink NFL gloves and 5K's with matching shirts/ribbons... there is more attention on the hoopla and dollars raised with little regard on the milestones achieved in curing the condition. I 'get' that this is less tangible for the average person, but I'm more interested in a cure, not just dollars)

Good to see the church stepping in here to put a stop to this nonsense.
A local Catholic schools alumni association posted tje same message on their Facebook page, even going a step further and asking people to donate their money to those charities that support ALS research "without killing human beings at any time in life, which includes the time from conception to death."

if you can do the reverse, some FBG wives (no names) might line up.
We need a thread to track which posters post a joke you think of before you get a chance to. Pretty sure Fennis would be public enemy #1 on my list.

Agreed. He cracks me up.

Did the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge with my sister and BIL last night. Used a skid loader. It was fun

What's the protocol if you complete the challenge, but are challenged again?

I think I can now take another few month break from FB.

Is there a video yet of the firetruck getting hit by lightening while doing this? Only caught a quick radio blurb so my details might be sketchy.

50 Cent is probably my favorite so far. After doing the Ice Bucket Challenge, he posts another video as part of his ongoing feud with Floyd Mayweather agreeing to donote $750,000 to Floyd's choice of charity if Floyd can read one full page of a Harry Potter book. Friggin hilarious.

I caught some of this on the radio this morning. Thought it was funny that 50 Cent said "ASL".

Yes, sort of. They focus more on charities that provide existing treatments and aid to people who can't afford them than on research for new cures, but they do attempt to quantify the effect of charities based on lives saved per dollar.

Even worse, I think it was "ASLELS." But the funniest part is basically calling out Mayweather for not being able to read well enough to get through a single page of Harry Potter.

I really hope Floyd reads that page of Harry Potter.

What was the last internet craze that was this widespread? Seriously cant come up with one.
planking, harlem shake
Gagham style!
Honestly don't think these are even close. I don't recall those completely taking over Facebook, Hollywood, and popular media the way this had.
True, because anyone can dump a bucket of ice water on their head.
And help raise a lot of money for an organization that helps with a horrendous disease.

That looks like the crying you did early in this thread...just like a school girl. The all caps post you had with the OMG stuff equaled the maturity of my 9 year old. :lmao:

Wow. An edit and rewrite too.

Dude, I'm not sure who you are, but you may want to reevaluate some stuff.

Why are you so bitter and angry about me? Let's sit and talk about this. I honestly know nothing about you other than that you're always upset with me, and I don't really know when it started or what set you off. This is no way to live your life, friend.
