Wal-Mart set to close 269 stores worldwide,154 in U.S. (1 Viewer)

Walmart will shutter more than 250 stores worldwide and exit its Walmart Express small-store format entirely as the company adjusts to stiff competition from its online nemesis, Amazon.

Walmart said in a statement on Friday that it would close 269 stores globally, of which 154 would be in the United States. That is about 2 percent of Walmart’s global footprint of 11,600 stores, and 3 percent of its 5,310 locations in the United States. Those stores are scheduled to close by the end of January.

The company has been slow to pull out of a flat sales period after the recession. And although sales have improved at Walmart recently, the retailer, the world’s largest by sales, has warned investors of lower profits next year because of its investments in its work force and its e-commerce operations.

About 16,000 store employees will be affected worldwide by the closings, Walmart said, including about 10,000 in the United States.

Walmart said it intended to transfer as many workers as it could to nearby stores and offer severance pay to those who do not find new positions. The company is the nation’s largest private-sector employer.

Even as it shutters locations, Walmart said it would open more than 300 stores globally in its next fiscal year, which starts in February. That number includes 50 to 60 new stores in the United States.

In all, the closings account for less than 1 percent of global square footage and revenue, Walmart said.

“Actively managing our portfolio of assets is essential to maintaining a healthy business,” Doug McMillon, Walmart’s president and chief executive, said in a statement. “Closing stores is never an easy decision, but it is necessary to keep the company strong and positioned for the future,” he said.

“It’s important to remember that we’ll open well more than 300 stores around the world next year,” he said. “So we are committed to growing, but we are being disciplined about it.”

Of the 154 locations Walmart will close in the United States, 102 will be Walmart Express stores, a small-format pilot program that the retailer began in 2011. But after a lackluster performance, Walmart said it would focus instead on its slightly larger Neighborhood Market format, which has logged strong sales.

Walmart is also closing 12 supercenters and four Sam’s Club membership stores.

Walmart’s online sales growth has been slowing, leading to concerns that the retailer is losing to the likes of Amazon in the all-important battle for online dollars.

The net net is they're adding stores but closing the smaller/under-performing ones first.

Definitely. That said, glad to hear they are keeping the neighborhood markets. They opened one right across from our grocery store (Harris Teeter) and while it doesn't have everything, it is on the right side of the traffic light, so quicker for me and everything I get there is cheaper than Harris Teeter. They just don't have the deli with Boar's Head and things like that, but for regular brand name stuff, they are easily 20% or so cheaper unless it's on sale. It's funny how it seems like a lot of people don't like shopping there because of the name, but unlike some off their super centers, it is nice and clean and quick to get in and out. There are some Walmart's that I have been in where it was an unpleasant experience, just inventory all over the place and bins/aisles a mess. Much rather go in Target and use my 5% off target card, but I do like the neighborhood market.

Still sucks for those 10,000 losing jobs here in the U.S. though.

Part of the problem was they stuck these things in towns almost like 7-11's,one almost on every block so some failing can't be any surprise.

Tom: No need to worry, Walmart doesn't sell quality yoga pants and therefore the potential closing of stores will not affect your ability to maintain a sharp focus and continue to send us top-quality pics. Thanks.

While i agree that they have way overbuilt stores, they have indicated they are going to make every effort to relocate those displaced workers into other positions in other stores locally and if that doesn't work, they get 60 days of pay.

Harris Teeter is awesome. I wouldn't be caught dead walking in a Wal-Mart if I had one in my town (Actually, I don't go to Wal-Mart as is so I guess blame guys like me for their slump).

Exactly what I mean and for our neighborhood market that is a dumb way too think. I like Harris Teeter, but it's no Wegmans. The Walmart neighborhood market is a small grocery store nothing like a big Walmart. It's smaller than Teeter, but for brand name items it's cheaper. I don't like big Walmarts but the neighborhood market is great. Think of a grocery store the size of Walgreens but cheaper than Harris Teeter.

Wife got offered a pharmacy manager job in one on the list that is closing, she didn't take it.

Small town, small store.

In less than 1 1/2 years Walmart ran the local pharmacy and the local grocery store out of business.

Now they are pulling out of the town.

smh.

Shocking, large corporations usually care much more about the communities they are in. ;)

This is pretty much Wal Mart in a nutshell. They are the worst thing to ever happen for poor people and the middle class, because they have probably taken away MILLIONS of good jobs and subsidized for their own crap. I understand they sell cheap stuff but it comes at the expense of other people having good jobs.

10,000 people to run 154 stores...wow.
Not really. 10,000 employees divided by 150 stores is roughly 65 employees per store (for the sake of numbers, let's say 66). Most Wal-Marts are 24 hours so three shifts...that's 22 people per shift. When you consider the size of Wal-Mart (even the small ones) and take into account security, check-out wprkers, maintenance, housekeeping, stock room, etc., its easy to imagine 10,000.But don't let math get in your way.

Hairy Peter is expensive. They're opening a second one here unfortunately. Would have preferred almost any other grocery chain over them.

I've said this about Walmart in previous threads, their marketing strategies are idiotic and very shortsighted. Their goals from everything I understand are always to push in store sales and not nearly as focused on eCommerce. In store sales are great, but without focusing more on eCommerce, they'll be a dinosaur one day.

One of the many reasons I will never shop in a Walmart or Sam's Club. Wonder if they will tear down the hulking remains of the big box stores or just leave them there as a monument to the high cost of low prices?

Seems like Walmart and Target have let Amazon run away with online segment.

Speaking of places I wouldn't be caught dead walking in to - I think Hairy Peter is on that list.

It's idiotic. Unless they shift strategies, they'll continue losing large amounts of market share.

There will always be a need for giant stores that sell crappy merchandise for little money. White trash folks need some place to feel at home.

Not when a sizable chunk of their customers can't even afford in home wi-fi.

It seems a good amount of the stores closing are the smaller store concepts that they tried out and apparently are not catching on.

Or like one of my cousins who was about to be "off the air" for a while after her decade old computer gave out.

I don't get the hate for Walmart. Is it the low prices?
It's that they ran every mom n pop off they could and the general public is to blame for falling for most of it. Low prices came at a steep cost in terms of jobs. Most Wal-Mart employees are working poor and you add that to the damage a Wal Mart does to local economy and you start to not like them.

I did rape a Wal Mart manager on a display that was mis-marked and acquired sets of colored pencils for all my Title I kids. It was pretty bad what I did but I said it like this...100 sets vs the loss vs your job when I call and say how you would not honor the prices and I started filming with my camera. At the least I told him they will demote you for incompetency, who would build an end cap like that?

And that was about 6 months ago. I go very infrequently and when I do I am usually looking for employee frack ups I can exploit.

The end cap had several items thrown in a bin all for 97 cents or whatever. I kind of knew in the back to school rage it could be wrong. Went to the front to check out and they were like triple+ the price in the display bin. I marched them to the display, manager came over and started to remove the sign which I showed him I already took the pictures.

Manager wilted and I bought every kid a pack of new colored pencils and a 15 cent notebook for my class, not a lot of money but you multiply times 100 kids and well...you can do the math. That story is 100% Grade A MOP Prime.
