Walter Thomas 6-5 370 (1 Viewer)

Apparently Miami has some interest in him....

http://dolphinsindepth.blogspot.com/2007/0...-draft-eve.html

MIAMI'S BIGGEST SECRET: That would be Walter Thomas, a 370-pound defensive tackle from Northwest Mississippi Community College. He played only two games there after being recruited but not qualifying academically at places like Oklahoma State. Anyway, the guy runs a 4.9, can dunk, bench presses 475 pounds, can do standing back flips and cartwheels. Apparently he can also dominate the line of scrimmage. He's 21 and he's had legal issues (conspiracy to commit robbery), but he is such a physical freak that a handful of teams have visited with him. One of those teams is your Miami Dolphins.

If this guy had more than a $.02 head, he'd have been a top 5 pick.
:hey: we'll know in the first few weeks of minicamp whether his heart is truly in it or not.

Im rooting for the big guy, obviously Im tied to his story now, but the odds are against him.

There's a short interview i did with him here

It is amazing how big this story has gotten. Im a little  that Im one the broke it, but obviously, its fun to be the first.

I'm rooting for him too, but only because of Martha. ;)

rumor that he got cut 9 minutes into minicamp

http://www.blackandgold.com/forums/showthread.php?t=16063

The Walter Thomas project is already over with the Saints. He lasted roughly 9 minutes at practice this morning, spent the remainder of the time in the training room and now his locker has been cleaned out. So lets move on from this discussion and just realize that some people have no problem wasting tons of talent.

some guy received an e-mail from him, said he would be around in june and things went well today. :(

from others reported by Scott Cody of WWL TV just confirmed that Walter Thomas is no longer a Saint. He lasted about 15 minutes of practice, but he was so out of shape he could not finish individual drills and had to be helped off of the field. He was then told to get his stuff and leave camp. :(

guess fans will have to wait until june to see if he'll be back, so much for the amazing dancing bear

I personally know nothing, but the boys at saintsreport.com say this is just a rumour. Apparently he has not been cut.

BIG DT THOMAS CUT

“He had a brief career,” is how Saints head coach Sean Payton referred to the 6-4, 375 pound mammoth Walt Thomas a day after cutting him early into the team’s first practice on Saturday. Thomas had become a bit of folk hero for Saints fans primarily based on stats like his size, speed and shoe size (a 16), but when it came down to playing football on the field, he wasn’t worth the time. “From a conditioning standpoint he had a long way to go. He was 12-13 minutes into practice and struggled so,” said Payton. “He went into the training room to get some treatment and we had just gotten into the second or third period of practice so that’s basically where it was at.”

When asked what was the quickest cut he had ever seen in his career Payton said, “I don’t know. I don’t know, maybe this one is up there.”

How in the world does something like this happen? With a guy like that, you know he is going to be a project. So, he comes in out of shape, and you cut him before one practice is over. Jeesh, why bother bringing him in. You'd think they'd at least give someone a week or something. Maybe talk to him after day 1 or 2, and say "hey, you gotta ____________" if you want to come back next week.

There is something else to this. Something he either said or smoked, but something else.

...and the NFL's only 'official' 400 pounder, OT Aaron Gibson could do the splits. The only question is, can they throw a pass through the uprights while kneeling at the 50 yard line?

Apparently he was so out of shape that he was a danger to himself when confronted with the rigors of an NFL training camp.

How can you coach a guy if he can't run from here to there without passing out? He had to leave the field after 13 minutes? 'Project' is one thing, but they can't even work on this project for more than 10 minutes at a time.

:lmao: The guy was already on thin ice due to his past indiscretions. If he doesn't have the common sense to at least be physically ready to exercise for more than a few minutes when he shows up to a football camp, he's gone. The guy obviously doesn't get it.

There is a long list of players who were/are physically gifted but don't have the heart, desire and focus to be a professional athlete. If I knew my "big break" was coming, you'd better believe that i'd be ready for it. 15 mins into a practice and he's out of it? Please. Maybe he'll get another shot and be ready for it.

Nobody wants another Kory Stringer. This guys risk most likely far outweighed the reward.
Exactly. They also don't want a guy who is so green that he doesn't have enough situational awareness to avoid other serious injuries. If a guy gets injured in their camp, the team has to pay for his medical expenses. This was obviously going nowhere. He wasn't in shape enough even to get through the first 15 minutes of a rookie mini camp, in which I would remind you they were not wearing pads. That's pathetic. He wasn't serious about this.

I suppose that could be true. Is that what it was?I just assumed anyone that could do cartwheels, hand stands, and jump tall buildings would have some semblance of cardio.

this was an interview with walt, mr reeves was supposedly his friend and said "He has been training like crazy so don't worry. I'm talking running on the beach (sand is hard to run in for a 370 pounder) hours on the eliptical machine, jumping rope, and even hitting the bag. He is pulling out all the stops. I guarantee conditioning will not be an issue. He knows what kind of opportunity this is for him."

;)

sean payton is supposedly pretty brutal, but 15 minutes?

perhaps not so bad, just dehydrated

http://www.nola.com/saints/t-p/index.ssf?/....xml&coll=1

According to Thomas' agent, Martin Magid, Thomas said his head hurt during the drills, but he still was able to compete. When trainers told him he appeared dehydrated and gave him intravenous fluids, Thomas still felt confident he could return to the field.

After the stuff that came out with his Myspace page, they were just looking for a reason to send him home. Fortunately, he provided one on day 1.

I never did hear what that was about as it was taken down by the time I checked. What was there?
Some pics of his boys smoking weed, and his comments, something along the lines of "back in the day, weed was my sheet" or something like that.

Good point. Payton has made a point of bringing in guys who are "high character" and will have a positive influence on the team. Thomas is a work in progress, apparently...

Has anyone heard anything on this guy? I really wanted my Bills to give him a shot last year. If he put a year in working on his conditioning he could potentially have value...

Pretty sure I saw him cooking my Country Slam at Denny's the other night.
