Wang ERA Pool (1 Viewer)

People hate the Yankees because of the mockery they make of the pay scale. That's why people love to see them crash and burn.
I find it odd that Yankees fans don't understand this.
Pay scale isn't everything. I've acknowledged that some restrictions need to be in place.
It clearly isn't. The Yankees' best teams were the earlier champions. Now it's just purchasing players on the downside of their career.

Rampant spending, selling the farm system and buying veteran players with bad deals does not work.
It can work (well, except the part about specifically buying a veteran player with a bad deal), the Yankees just aren't very good at it.I think the biggest problem with NY is that they have not placed much of a premium on defense, although that's changed a little in the last year. Matsui is terrible. Damon is terrible. Nady was terrible. Cano and Jeter were terrible. Giambi and Abreu were really terrible. As bad as Wang's been, a guy who relies on his defense as much as he does hasn't gotten much help from them. They've also done a brutal job developing players. Hocking your prospects for established vets can work, but you actually need good prospects.
As more teams generate more revenue it's getting harder and harder to get a young just entering your prime player with a FA deal. Teams are locking these guys up. This year was a bit different for them as they got CC and Tex...but still
And this was exactly Selig's intent with the revenue sharing. The Yankees just haven't changed their model and they need to.
