Was My E-mail Just Hacked? (1 Viewer)

Got this message from Google a few minutes ago...

Hi Rob, Your Google Account @gmail.com was just used to sign in from Chrome on Windows.

Friday, September 25, 2015 7:15 PM (Eastern Daylight Time)
Virginia, USA*
Chrome

And it was from a Samsung device, which none of us have. I removed that device 18 minutes after the notice and immediately changed the password.

Is there another explanation, or was my e-mail hacked?

If not, would they still have access to the e-mail after the device was removed and the PW changed?

Sounds like it. Put 2 factor authentication on your account. It's virtually impossible to get hacked with it on.

Also, if you used that same password anywhere else, go change it.

Thanks Grove.

Weird that it's from a phone -- would someone be hacking from a phone? And the fact that it's in VA makes me wonder too.

Regardless, I logged out all other web sessions, removed that device and changed my PW.

google user-agent switcher it could have been from a computer.

Regardless, it sounds like someone somehow has your password which indicates some kind of keylogger.

I would recommend reformatting your computers if you can't find and get rid of any loggers.

Also, it wouldn't hurt to change your Wifi password as it is possible a neighbor could have hacked into your wifi and logged your keystrokes.

Please don't do this. It's moronic. Just do a thorough malware check. Malwarebytes is your buddy.

Yeah, sounds like it is from the Pentagon. I wonder what kind of radical Islamic type sites you might be frequenting.

Yeah... would need a lot more to wipe everything.

Checked antivirus, firewall and ran Malwarebytes and didn't find anything. Also checked most recent log ins on my e-mail and it didn't have the one Google sent me.

Doesn't indicate key logger at all. Could be many, many things. Definitely don't reformat. Change your gmail password, enable two-step authentication, and get yourself some type of AV, if you don't have one. If you don't, check with your ISP - many of them provide free, good AV. And stay off shady porn sites (just assuming).

Can you direct me to the non-shady porn sites? Asking for a friend.

Reformatting your computer after you might have been hacked is moronic if you're unable to find anything? You know some things won't get picked up by malwarebytes and virus scanners right? Not only are you wrong but you come off as a nasty person here.

Yes it does, if someone was able to sign into his email without cracking security questions and changing password it indicates it could be a keylogger

You're making assumptions, as OP said nothing about security questions, so no. There may be other reasons. Regardless, though, the steps I provided (as have others) are a much more reasonable response than a reformat. Not saying that's not a good solution under certain circumstances, but in this instance, it's really likely not.
