I know Shanny can drive people nuts but Portis and Larry Johnson can both be had after the 5th and 8th rounds respectively.... isn't this value worth going after for a RB3?

What do Skins homers think?

Portis is currently in the 8th or 9th round so to me that is a cold steal for a starting running back on a Mike S. team. I read somewhere that whenever there is a competition for carries Portis has a extra incentive to get it down. From Miami to Denver when placed in this situation Portis rises to the top.

If Portis if your RB3 then you're getting great value. I'm drafting WR's and top QB's early with the thought that guys like Portis and Ahmad Bradshaw will be available later on. Both should be solid RB2's this year.

I expect Portis' ADP to start climbing soon with all of the positive training camp reports, but as of now he's a pretty ridiculous steal.

In my most recent 12-team startup, I took Portis in the 12th round and Larry Johnson in the 19th. So yeah, I think they were worth it at those picks...

On the depth chart released yesterday Portis is listed as 1st string and LJ as 2nd string.

Portis has slimmed down and been working out the entire offseason, so I expect him to look better than he did last season.

Also, there have been some rumblings that LJ will get the goalline and short yardage duty.

This comes down to the general theory on whether or not handcuffing a cheap backfield is a good idea. It's not unrealistic to expect RB3 numbers out of Portis/LJ, it's probably unrealistic to expect better than RB3. So, is it worth it to get RB3 from 5th and 8th round picks? Most people probably plan to fill their RB3 in round 4 or 5. You could open with something like Turner/Grant/Desean Jackson/Best. Solid team. Then in rounds 5 and 8 you could go BPA, and add something like Nicks and Michael Bush. I like this team a lot better than a team that requires me to use picks 5 and 8 on Portis and LJ. While it may seem "cheap", it's eating up two of your picks, and I'd rather just take a guy a round earlier who I can have reasonable faith in producing more points anyway. That said, Portis isn't a bad pick in round 5 or 6, nor is LJ a bad pick in round 8 or later. I just don't like the idea of handcuffing a backfield with two picks in the first 8-10 rounds. You won't see me with both Deangelo and Jstew, Felix/Barber, Jacobs/Bradshaw, Bush/McFadden, or Portis/LJ, unless incredible value presents itself. I don't think you give your team enough diversified firepower to win when you target one of these RBBC situations.

This year I am actually looking to grab a stud TE/QB in the earlier rounds because there are multiple phenomenal options for your RB3 in the 8th round (Portis, Sproles, LT, T Jones).Portis' ADP is 8.06...don't need to grab him in the 5th.I don't advocate you handcuff at all...just grab the one with the most value.

in my main league yesterday I drafted AP with my 3rd pick. and then i didnt draft any RB's till round 7,8,9. In those rounds i drafted Forsett (7th round), Portis (8th) and Arian foster (9th). I think if u have stud like AP in 1st then u can just fill ur WR's TE and QB and then draft those 3 sleepers. One of them will definitely explode with RB 2 value (forsett or arian foster) or RB 1 value (portis)

If I'm going to use two relatively low picks on a running back tandem, I'd generally rather do it in a situation where I don't think the coach feels like he 'owes' both guys carries. What I'm hoping for in that situation is that one guy wins the job outright. So of the pairs listed above, I think I like Bush/McFadden the best...either guy could win the job outright without the coach feeling much obligation to provide the other guy with carries. At least, that's my take on it.

ya'll don'e remember Shannhan well do you? Its a RB who's it going to be on Sunday fiasco every week it seems

me? I stayed away from all WAS RB's except Torain. Why Torain? He showed promise in Denver, Shanny brought him in for a reason and Portis/LJ/Parker are older RB's with lots of miles and with Shanny and a young RB like Torain ........... I'm just saying is all ............
