WCOFF 2011 talk (1 Viewer)

I have played in WCOFF for five years now and really enjoyed it. I finished in the money last year and rolled my winnings over into my team this year. Weird stuff is going on; the site is not answering questions, people are claiming they are not getting paid, draft picks were announced late with only a small amount of teams announced, and the website is not working correctly. Does anyone know what is going on? Is the contest going to happen this year and if so does it matter if they don't have any money to pay the winners?

It's a mess over there. Yes, there are quite a few people that still haven't been paid. Estimates range from $600,000-1mil+ but nobody knows for sure. I would not count on there being a draft this year. They have shut the message board down and not allowing any new posts. There is an extensive thread on the FFPC boards in the High Stakes Forum. That should give you all the info you need.

This was posted Thursday on the WCOFF message board by Jill:

"Due to unforeseen circumstances, the World Championship of Fantasy Football has been canceled for the 2011 season. We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused our players. Please be assured we exhausted all possible options for a solution which would allow us to host this year's contest.

While the 2011 contest will not be hosted, ownership continues to work towards a successful restructuring of the business with the anticipation of returning in 2012.

Participants previously registered for the 2011 WCOFF will be receiving follow up communication with instructions for requesting refunds of entry fees paid. Additionally, communication will be forthcoming to players with award credit on account.

On behalf of the World Championship of Fantasy Football we thank our loyal supporters and look forward to returning the WCOFF to its position as the premier fantasy contest in the world in 2012."

Take the $2,000 plus flight, hotel, let's face it WCOFF is like a $5k+ weekend when all is said and done...take that money and buy yourself several entries into the FFPC. You know David and Joe are not going to run off with the money. We know where Joe works

We can understand the frustration anyone would have if they were not paid their prize money as promised, but before you wish too much ill will on Dustin, you should know that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma and is currently undergoing extensive treatment to fight the disease. Please keep him in your prayers. Thanks,Mark HannaPresident and CEORealTime Fantasy Sports Inc.
I think alot of people's prayers were answered.Personal opinion, but I think Dustin is the worst kind of criminal. If you're going to be a thief, have a pair and break into a place at the risk of being caught. Taking advantage of people's trust is just low. I'd put him a hair above people that take advantage of kids. Damaging an industry that provides enjoyment for many is wrong. While I won't go as far as to wish the ultimate demise on the guy, I hope his medical battle ruins him financially and leaves him severely davastated so he can maybe related to how he was a cancer to the fantasy football world.

J would be the last guy in this industry I would expect to pull any funny business. Now that Dodds character has always looked a little shady to me. ;)

You can add "unforeseen circumstances" to the extensive list of lies made by Dustin and WCOFF. This has been foreseen for months, and they caused these circumstances.

The line I'm most interested in is this:

"Additionally, communication will be forthcoming to players with award credit on account."

I'm owed $3,875, so please let that be true. But I'm not holding my breath.

As an outsider who's never played in big-dollar leagues like WCOFF, but had seen their advertising and such for almost a decade:

What happened to WCOFF? Have they been shady since the beginning (circa 2002), or did it all go south only over the past few years?

Were they 100% legit when they first started up? Did someone else buy the WCOFF concept and run it into the ground?

Was it a bad business model from the start, or was it OK at one time but somehow changed in a business-foolish way? Alternatively, was it more an issue of "bad people" than "bad business"?

...

I mean, I remeber seeing some short documentary about the WCOFF maybe around 2004 or 2005. Seemed like a big deal with a lot of backing money ... seemed healthy. They were the first of their kind, they should have had a huge competitive advantage. What the heck happened?

it was great when it started. basically run by two guys, Emil and Lenny, can't remember their last names. absolutely outstanding event. i forget what year they sold it to a larger group, but it went downhill after that. I think I played the first 4 years.

I guess they are done. They have a lot of my money. This blows. I am not cancelling my travel plans though and I just signed up with NFFC. See y'all in Vegas.

Once you mentioned their first names, I was able to fill in their last names from following the FFB-information business -- Emil Kadlec of Fantasy Sports Publications, and Lenny Pappano of DraftSharks. With that info, I was able to find this article, which answered a lot of my questions.(I never knew there was such a thing as a Fantasy Players Association -- looks like it was created about a year ago.)

A friend of mine and I partnered for the WCOFF first year (2002). We met Emil and Lenny. They were quality dudes. Two entrepreneurs with a good idea driven by the love of the game.
