WCOFF Satellite Tournament (1 Viewer)

Has anyone participated in one of the WCOFF Satellite Tournaments? I am considering doing this for this season but wanted to get some thoughts from any of you who have participated. Are there suggestions? Good things? Bad things? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I just know nothing about the WCOFF and its satillites. :bag:

SS - there are several threads about the WCOFF and the satellites in this forum - you may have to search around to find them (if I run across them I will get the titles and post them here)

There are several WCOFF veterans here (radballs, Team Legacy, FullbackFro come to mind right away, but there are lots more who are less frequent posters as well).

The WCOFF satellites do not run exactly the same as the main competition. They are 12 team leagues, but play straight through on Total Points for weeks 1-14.

Then the top four teams advance to a two week head to head playoffs - winner take all - either $2000 or a WCOFF package worth somewhat more.

There are two types of satellites running now at xpert

1) Live Draft - 2 minute clock for picks - takes less than two hours with a fast group.

2) Slow draft - 8 hour clock suspended at night, which allows people to do it without missing (too much) work or other activities. Should take about a week with a good group of drafters (the one I did last month was done in six days but that is the fastest one I have seen).

Let me know if you have other questions

I've done two slow ones and one live draft so far. I've also seen some results from other drafts. It does appear that either the competition is tougher in the slow drafts or it helps the competitors having extra time to do research to make their picks. In other words, the slow drafts have been a lot tighter than the live ones from what I've seen. So, if you're really organized and ready to draft you may be able to find easier money in the live ones. Just my preliminary observations so far though.

It's a lot of fun but the vig is a little steep for some ($2K payoff on $2,640 invested, 76% payback if you take the cash). If you take the WCOFF package, the payoff is much better (over 95% assuming you're going to stay at the host hotel) but you have to wait an entire year (technically) to get paid off for it and that's assuming you're available to draft the following year in the main event in Las Vegas or Atlantic City.

The satellite league is good. One drawback - the two week playoff system subjects you to the whim of a bad week. My team crushed the league in the regular season last year - I won by like 200 points. My team was around 10th in scoring in all the satellite leagues out of like 700 teams. But I had a bad first week and lost by a couple of points in the playoffs. I got nothing for a sensational season, with one bad week. That is frustrating.

$2,640 invested?from what i was looking at its just over $200 to enter a satelite. I guess i just dont follow.

Never did it. Bad deal.

If you win and want big WCOFF, its like them holding your money for 1.5 years, plus the payouts they give

Sorry, I meant amount invested amongst all of the participants. Plus it's $20 more this year or $220 per entry.

Same thing happened to me last year. It was almost boring all year because I was leading by so much and than in the first week of the playoffs I had 4 guys get hurt in the first half of their games and not return and I lost by 7. I'd like to see WCOFF incorporate your YTD points into the playoff format to help this. That being said I joined a recent WCOFF sattelite league and I don't regret it. I did a slow draft and I really enjoyed the process. The competition level of the league is strong and I think that would add to the enjoyment of whoever is able to win the league.

To be fair you can always accept the $2k instead and you don't have to wait a year for that. You can find higher payouts for sattelite leagues but there are 3 reason I decided to do a WCOFF league. 1) Some leagues pay 83-84% but they pay that out to teams finishing 1-3. Due to the extra 20% fee the WCOFF payout is 75.75% if you elect the cash option but that's 75.75% to first place. I dont think any other league offers that much payout to first place and all I really ever care about winning is first place. 2)I like the one point per pass catch for RB's. Every other league I have found only gives half a point per catch. 3)You have the option of $2k or the WCOFF entry prize.

I'm going to join a few other sattelite leagues with higher payouts but I don't think the WCOFF one is a bad deal.

I agree. I still like the format and will probably do another two of them. I'm really glad they went with some slow draft options because that works better with my schedule with two young children.

I'll be going to Vegas in 2006 for $0.

So even though I agree w/ the payout being a bit low. It feels pretty good to have the whole ride paid.

I would suggest you do it as part of an overall FF "teams purchased".

Like Menobrown said, 1st place at 75% is pretty sweat....

Participated last year, won my league and took the cash option. I was second in scoring pretty much all year to a very strong team (Jersey Paul) and thanks to Coles big second half from Vinny, I cameback in a thriller.

All to first place, makes for a rush the final week of the season.

Remember, you ARE taxed for your win.

Well this is pretty negligble - yes you will get a 1099 for the $2K (or the WCOFF entry), but you will be paid in January 2007, so if you use it for the entry in 2007, you can then write off all your associated expenses, plus any subscriptions or other FF related expenses (including those for other contests).
