Week 17 Sunday night game: Panthers-Falcons? (1 Viewer)

I'm going out on a limb and say the Sunday night game Week 17 is going to be Carolina-Atlanta.  The reason I say this is because almost always the last game on the NFL regular season schedule determines the last playoff spot for one conference while the other conference's playoff set is already prepared.  Am I reading too far ahead for next week?

You are reading too far ahead. If Carolina wins this weekend they are in. If Atlanta wins this weekend they are in.

I know that if both teams win, they're in.  But next Sunday's showdown would determine the NFC South.  What I'm saying is the Saints could miss the playoffs altogether, in my opinion.

I take that back.  The Saints will still make the playoffs because of their earlier season win against the Lions.  And even if the Cowboys win tomorrow, I still don't see them beating the Eagles next Sunday.  So, it makes sense that the Panthers-Falcons game next Sunday will determine the NFC South and that division gets three teams in the playoffs.  The Saints would be one of the wild cards.

If the Saints win they get a playoff spot. If the Saints win and the Panthers lose, the Saints win the NFC South.

I think the game will be important regardless what happens week 16, so good chance it gets flexed.

Is there a scenario where Detroit gets in and keeps one of the three NFC South teams out that can happen in the next two weeks?

Atlanta loses last two.  Both are tough games.
Also I believe that while Detroit loses the H2H tiebreaker against all three South teams, if they end up in a three-way tie with either Carolina or NO plus Dallas (or maybe Seattle) they somehow get the playoff spot based on common opponents.

Fyi I started a whole thread at the beginning of the season guessing the Week 17 flex game, but yeah, you're probably right that it will be Car-Atl because it will likely be the only game with any stakes at all. The only other possibility is if Jax loses to SF tomorrow and Titans beat LAR, then those two play for the division Week 17. But both scenarios are unlikely.

Yes, if Detroit wins out, and either Seattle or Dallas wins out, and there is a 3 way tie, it takes hth out of the equation and goes to conference record. Since most Detroit fans have written off the playoffs and are hoping for a coaching change this will probably happen and then they make playoff run.
