Thanks for all the kind words about last week's Med Check. We weren't perfect here, but we were pretty close, using all our sources and medical advisors to get you the most accurate and up-to-date information just before your fantasy roster locks. Be sure to check out the Med Check in all its forms -- a last-second check on NBCSports' "Fantasy Fix" at 11.45, plus a chat over at BaseballProspectus.com to answer your roster questions at 11. (All times Eastern). After last week's concussion to Bengals C Eric Ghiaciuc, who went back in the game, but is out for this week, this article by Alan Schwarz is even more important. The NFL has to be a leader on brain injuries and I think they want to be, but it will be hard to go that last needed step. They have to know that fans understand and that the small hit to the competition isn't worth affecting someone's life. There's a lot to cover this week so let's get to it:
Injury Effect of the Week: New feature focusing on the biggest change caused by an injury. This week, it's a Monday matchup with Lito Sheppard out for the Eagles, which should open things up for the Redskins passing game. My boys at Pro Football Prospectus tell me that last season when Sheppard was in the game, the Eagles gave up 70 less yards on his side and significantly fewer TDs. Even worse, the Eagles let Rod Hood leave, which downgrades them further. Joselio Hanson, the nickel back with Sheppard out, got torched last year in the Giants comeback but the ‘Skins don't have a WR tall enough to take advantage of the vertically challenged Hanson. The Lions in Week 3 are a whole different story.
HOU-CAR
TEXANS: NO SIGNIFICANT INJURIES
PANTHERS: NO SIGNIFICANT INJURIES
CIN-CLE
T.J. Houshmandzadeh: GREEN - He's got a sore knee, but played through it well last week. Until the Bengals get Chris Henry back, Housh will get tons of targets.
Shayne Graham: GREEN - He's a kicker, but I'll tell you anyway. The hip is sore, but he'll kick.
Deltha O'Neal: GREEN - Interesting one here. He's got a sore knee and sources tell me that he looked "a step slow" in practice. That could mean good things for Braylon Edwards.
Gary Baxter: YELLOW - Both corners are banged up. Even if they're in, Carson Palmer should have a field day and with Houshmandzadeh hurting, you know who he'll be looking for.
Leigh Bodden: YELLOW - see above
IND-TEN
TITANS: NO SIGNIFICANT INJURIES
Freddy Keiaho: RED - Tony Dungy sounded like he'd sit Keiaho this week. It's a system defense, but one that funnels to the weak-side LB. It's a dropoff for the Colts that could help the Titans running game.
NO-TB
SAINTS: NO SIGNIFICANT INJURIES
Carnell Williams: YELLOW - I drove a new CTS this week and it was a great car. So let's stop calling Williams a "Cadillac" when he's in the shop more than a used Fiat. He'll play but split time with Michael Pittman.
Chris Hovan: YELLOW - He's a gametime decision with a sprained ankle. If he's out, then the Bucs front is going to be even softer for Deuce McAllister's power runs.
SF-STL
Tye Hill: RED - Can the reports and the team denial be right? Yes. Hill does have a severe rib injury, but he thinks he'll be back sooner than expected. Players are freaks, so don't mistake the "normal" recovery time with the NFL recovery time. No question that he's out this week - good news for Alex Smith and his WRs.
Richie Incognito: RED
Orlando Pace: RED - He's done for the season and doesn't show up on the injury list, but this is a reminder that he'll be missed more in the passing game.
Drew Bennett: GREEN - He'll play, though he's still feeling the quad strain and could be more of a #3 than his normal #2.
BUF-PIT
STEELERS: NO SIGNIFICANT INJURIES
Josh Reed: RED - He didn't practice with a thigh injury, leaving Roscoe Parrish to take the #3 slot.
GB-NYG
Eli Manning: YELLOW - Jim Andrews said he was "50-50." That sounds like a yellow to me. He's the ultimate game time decision (though sources tell me he'll play) and even if he does play, he's risky. If you don't have better options, have you considered taking up another hobby?
Osi Umenyiora: YELLOW - Umenyiora is a surprising yellow and was almost green, save for a source telling me that he'll be spotted in rather than getting more chances to rack up sacks.
Aaron Kampmann: GREEN - Eli Manning can't be happy to hear that Kampmann is ready to play.
Vernand Morency: RED - Looks like he's out again after his knee responded poorly to workouts. That leaves Brandon Jackson with another chance to establish himself.
Greg Jennings: RED - Jennings still has the hamstring problem and still has the injury prone tag firmly attached.
ATL-JAC
Josh Scobee: RED - He's a kicker and he's out. Go back to sleep if you cared.
Marcus Stroud: GREEN - He's in, despite not practicing. That's bad for the Falcons running game.
SEA-ARI
D.J. Hackett: RED - He'll miss a month or more with a high ankle sprain. Expect Nate Burleson to get his slot and his targets.
Shaun Alexander: GREEN - No one's talking about his hand issue, but it won't affect his running. Catching, maybe, so he's a minor downgrade in PPR leagues.
Bryant Johnson: YELLOW - He strained his hamstring during Friday's practice which doesn't leave much time to heal. With Anquan Boldin and Larry Fitzgerald there, they can be conservative. However, he's a nice #3 since he never draws doubles.
DAL-MIA
Terence Newman: RED - The foot is better, but not good. He's a gametime decision and will be limited if he plays. Expect him to essentially play nickel.
Terry Glenn: RED - He's out this week, but has elected not to have surgery now. He'll rehab and hopes to be back, so he's worth keeping an eye on over the next couple weeks.
Jesse Chatman: GREEN - His practice on Friday looks solid and he'll be back in the 1A RB slot behind Ronnie Brown.
MIN-DET
T.J. Duckett: RED - An ankle sprain will keep him out and give the full load to Tatum Bell. Or will it? Sources indicate that the Lions think they can use short passes, especially quick screens, in place of some runs.
Kevin Jones: RED - Just because Duckett is out doesn't make Jones heal quicker. He's still a couple weeks away, according to sources, and will be a spot player at best until mid-season.
Chester Taylor: RED - The hip soreness combined with Adrian Peterson's big Week 1 will limit Taylor's touches even if he does play. Peterson has a really favorable matchup and impressed me in his NFL debut.
OAK-DEN
Josh McCown: RED - Foot? Yeah, McCown sprained his foot as well as breaking his finger. Combine the two and you'll get your first look at Daunte Culpepper in silver and black.
Javon Walker: GREEN - Walker isn't having any real problem with the sore shoulder that dropped him on the injury report. His developing rapport with Jay Cutler offsets a tough Oakland pass D.
KC-CHI
Brad Maynard: RED - It doesn't sound like the Ball State kid will punt this week. Without his booming leg, the KC special teams might be a better play.
Eddie Kennison: RED - One less target for Damon Huard and one less reason to rely on the KC offense.
NYJ-BAL
Steve McNair: YELLOW - McNair healed some as the week went on, getting into Friday's first team action. He's technically a game time decision, but sources tell me he'll play. Brian Billick will have a quick hook if he sees McNair limping.
Ray Lewis: YELLOW - The Grade II strain of his triceps didn't appear to slow him down last week and with a week of treatment, the only risk is that he does something that exacerbates it and forces him out. Given the forces Lewis generates, that's possible. Here's the great story from last week -- he convinced Billick and defensive coordinator Rex Ryan that he could play by punching Ryan.
Jonathan Ogden: RED - He's out this week with turf toe. If the Jets had any rush, it would be more of a factor for McNair or Boller.
Ed Reed: GREEN - A mild sprain won't hold him out, though with all the defensive injuries, the pass coverage might suffer slightly. Everyone might seem a step slower.
Samari Rolle: GREEN - The foot is sore but sources tell me that everyone that's sore on the Ravens will play. That's largely because if Lewis is leading, everyone else wants to follow.
Chad Pennington: RED - He's out for this week, though the ankle shouldn't keep him out much longer.
Thomas Jones: GREEN - It's not a good matchup for him this week, but it won't be the fault of his calf when he has a low-point week. He's as healthy as he was last week.
SD-NE
Antonio Gates: GREEN - The back spasms were transient, but definitely have to concern anyone that owns the big TE. This could be a factor more for keeper leagues than the first half of 2007.
Luis Castillo: YELLOW - Mixed reports on Castillo. The foot kept him out of practice, but I think since it's not just any game this week, he'll be in. How well he plays remains to be seen.
Shawne Merriman: GREEN - You know how steroids sometimes cause problems with tendons? Just sayin'.
Tom Brady: GREEN - I just love that he's on the injury report, week after week. I'm convinced it's just to mess with my injury statistics. That Belichick can hold a grudge.
WAS-PHI
Clinton Portis: YELLOW - The knee's not on the injury report, but what about the ribs that cost him carries last week? The Redskins aren't saying but my sources tell me that he's wearing a flak jacket. L.J. Smith: YELLOW - I hate game-time decisions, because I don't have until game time to tell you this info. I think Smith will play, but be spotted in.
Lito Sheppard: RED - See "Injury Effect of the Week."
