Week 5 Waiver Wire D's (1 Viewer)

what about the Bengals facing Jax and then Indy? Bengals are actually not too bad on D this year

I'm grabbing Cincy. As a previous poster stated, Cincy hasn't been that bad and the Jags offense has been non existent.

I'll most likely pursue Tennessee. Strong run defense vs a struggling offense and hobbled QB? Yes please.

Although Cincy seems like a strong play as well. I have a gut feeling that their matchup with Jax will turn into a bizarre shootout though.

prob not a popular pick but I'm going buf vs phi and going ahead and grabbing dal vs stl for next week
Ballsy call, but could pay dividends if the wheels come off for Philly ... sacks and turnovers could be the order of the day, especially if Freddy shreds the Philly defense, helping Fitz and co. grab an early advantage. Hell, if they picked Tom Terrific 4 times at home, why not Vick? Dallas coming off the bye, with a full arsenal of weapons offensively, will be a different team than we've seen. Loving that play as well, as a pre-emptive gold mine ... if I can't snag Cincy this week, I may look to these two you recommend ... :thumbup:

NYG @ home vs SEA is a solid play

TENN @ PITT looks to be a moderate risk high reward. The Steelers are looking more and more like they are suffering a SB loser hangover

Bengals and Niners went before me on Waivers, Indy got snaked minutes after waivers cleared (although Minny @KC didn't treat me well last week), Jacksonville was the best play left in a negative points for yards/points league. Sometimes streaming D's isn't that fun.

Put together a little spreadsheet for data on leagues that score negative points for yards and points allowed as well as standard D/ST scoring. Took the bottom 3rd offenses in each category and came up with the optimal teams you want to play your D/St against in these formats.

The following offenses were bottom 1/3 in both scoring and yards per game. I'm going to make it a point to try and play D's against these teams in those formats.

Jacksonville

St. Louis

Kansas City

Seattle

Indianapolis

Cleveland

Minnesota

In order of preference, as of week 4. I'm ignoring match ups where the DST is rostered in deep leagues.

Week 5: Indy VS KC, Cincy @ Jax, KC @ Indy, AZ @ Minnesota (NYG VS Seattle is the play here if available)

Week 6: Cincy VS Indy, Oak VS Cleveland (GB VS Rams, Pitt VS Jax, Chicago VS Minny are all stellar matchups but probably not available)

Week 7: Oak Vs KC, Cleveland Vs Seattle, Seattle @ Cleveland (Prime matchups include NO VS Indy, Dallas Vs Rams, Baltimore @ Jax, GB @ Minny)

So if you want to jump the gun on your league, grab Oakland this week, sit them against Houston and then enjoy a couple tasty match ups. I'll analyze the rest of the match ups as I have time if anybody cares.

Cincy

Giants

KC

Cincy is #1 since they look solid for this week and ok for next. (Indy is going to improve each week in my humble opinion.)

Giants against SEA. Enough said.

KC is ranked 3rd since I believe Indy keeps improving on O.

Indy against the KC messed up O is a good choice too. That game just has to be ugly to watch.

Anyone have an opinion on DET at home vs CHI? I grabbed them in a 10-teamer with short benches. I've got to believe DET will be tough at home, on the carpet, in front of a packed house. Add to that they're playing Cutler - who can turn the ball over under pressure. I'm thinking this can be a medium to low risk/high reward play.

I really thought about rolling the dice on Buffalo while Baltimore's on bye but ended up with San Francisco. For now. Thought about Cinci as well but I ended up going for the team playing at home.The Chargers D has been garbage so far. Any expectations of a turnaround @ Denver?

I grabbed PIT who was dropped in my league, are they as shot as everyone is saying or still a better gamble than a WW D?

DET is a solid play this week and looking more and more like a solid play for the rest of the year. Some folks had them pegged to be a serious unit prior to the season (and even last year) and they have lived up to that billing. The Bears are going to have some serious issues with the DL of the Lions. The only offensive weapon that the Bears have is Forte and he will be dangerous in the receiving game. The Lions will collapse a woeful pocket and crumble that OL of the Bears at will and Cutler will indeed be running for his life looking for help from his avergae receiving corp. The Bears would be wise to get Cutler out of the pocket and on the run. Trust me when I tell you that the Lions have a deep rooted obsession to beat the snot out of the Bears after the Calvin Johnson non-TD last year and most importantly- the beatings that the Bears have laid on them in the past. Cutler has enjoyed a lot of success vs the Lions but I see a long day coming for the Bear's offense

Any one drop Philly yet. Im thinking about dropping them for Cinci. Im a little disappointed with Phillys def so far.

Agreed^2!!!!

Surprised nobody has mentioned Jax vs Cinci this week.

Jaguars have been much tougher and they're at home this week where they usually play a lot better.

Most of the D's mentioned here (i.e. TN...lol) were gone LAST week.

Grabbed Cincy this week. I have the Titans....not trying to turn this into a WDIS thread but I am having a hard time deciding between the two. Giants are not on our waiver wire.

I am leaning towards the Titans.

Dallas doesn't get STL in Week 6, Green Bay does. Great play but probably not on many WWs.

I'm hoping to get the whole season finished by next week, and then will update the spreadsheet with the current statistics after each week as they come in so we can monitor:1) How many teams stay in the bottom 10 offenses and which ones move into it.

2) Great plays that arise 3-8 weeks from now that don't look good at all right now.

3) Also want to add all the teams in who are bottom 10 in either scoring or total yardage but not both, to increase the viable options each week for super deep leaguers.

My choices really suck. KC Vs. IND, IND vs. KC and Jac vs. Cin. Guess I am going IND vs. KC.

Absolutely agree with your last two sentences however, I think Jax at home is a shark play. Until giving up 503 yards last week to NO, nobody had topped 300 on them. They did allow 30 points to the Jets in Week 2 but their offense short fielded them consistently, only allowed 283 yards. I think in 12+ team leagues, where most of the D's mentioned in this thread are gone, your options are them @ home vs the Red Rookie or KC on the road against what (statistically) appears to be an improving Indy offense. I'm running with Jax unless something better hits the WW because of somebody else's bye week issues.

Any thoughts on Minny at home against the Cards?
I actually picked up the Vikings for a 1 week cover (for Baltimore). At home, probably angry for the losses, pass rush is good too. I just remember from the Lions game a couple weeks back, the defense looked really good for the first half...Detroit picked them apart the 2nd half though. Anyhow, not much else for me to choose from so I went with them for this 1 week.

Looking to cut bait here on the PITT D. It is looking more and more like a long season for the Black and Gold.
That bad?

I drafted Pitt thinking I could set it and forget it for the season, but after 4 weeks of below average play I dropped them for Detroit.

Really liking Cinn since they just limited Fitzpatrick and Buffalo's passing offense to just 199 yards. Although they only got 1 sack, they hit Fitzpatrick 6 times. Bills offensive line is much better than Jaguars. And Gabbart is a rook. I'll take the Buuuuungles this week.

I drafted Pitt also thinking they would be dominating all season like last one and would start every week. I just dropped them and picked up Cincy and SF for a platoon.

Cincy & SF have the same BYE (week 7), otherwise I'd do the same. I've been platooning SF & NO w/ good/decent results

Cards should abuse them > THIS
THIS may be hopeful but is far from soundActually both the Vikings DST vs Kolb and a poor AZ offensive line & the Cardinals DST vs (at best) a very inconsistent McNabb are both high upside playsThe problem is that either could produce very little on any given Sunday.....still if the better DST options are not available I think both are playable this week. (I actually picked up the Vikings DST last week to play against KC and then play this week vs AZ)Both of those are stricly desparate one week plays with AZ on bye in Week 6 and the Vikings heading to Chicago for a Sunday night game.

Just picked up Titans in my league i use weekly ww dst :banned:

I did go with Cincy for this week against the Jags. They should work out next week unless Painter takes a big step this week.

I have Jets D...but 49rs, Texans, and Saints are available...out of the three who should I grab. Just don't feel confident going against Patriots even though Jets did have two special team TD's last week.

there've been a lot of cincy mentions in this thread, already, and they're probably top 10 statistically in most leagues, so there's not much to add, but they're probably more than a 'week 5 waiver pick up' --- wk6 they host indy, wk8 @sea, wk10 host pitt, wk12 host cle, wk13 pitt again, and then playoff weeks 15 + 16 they get stl and az.that's not a bad run.

For those in a REAL pinch (like myself, WW choices are THIN), one may want to monitor that weather sitch down in Jax ... in a similar scenario, @Carolina, the Jags/Panthers engaged in a true shambles of a game offensively. Jags only gave up 14 points, and 265 yards. But no sacks/turnovers, which concerns me.

Hmmmm ...think they may be worth a gamble today, for the desperate :wall:

Think I am rolling with the DAL/CIN combo for the rest of the season. Only week that looks dicey is week 14 (NYG@DAL & HOU@CIN) which is the start of my playoffs which I am a little concerned about.

Bengals D/ST Cowboys D/ST

@Jac BYE

Ind @NE

@Sea @Phi

@Ten Sea

@Bal @Wsh
