What does pretentious sounding even mean? Is it similar to "He done go actin all smart and stuff?"

I'm a Radiohead fan, and they have definitely spanned the spectrum with their style.

Pablo Honey - Alt Rock

The Bends - Alt Rock

OK Computer - Transition begins from Alt Rock to more electronic feel

Kid A - Transition underway, moving into more electronic feeling music

Amnesicac, Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows, The King of Limbs - Full-on electronic albums

I like both sounds, as my taste in music touches alt rock and electronic. I enjoyed the transition in styles, although I have to say first few spins of the latter albums took a bit to get used to, but eventually enjoyed them all the same.

It's not that I never liked Weezer in voting for Radiohead. On the contrary, I'm a Weezer fan. Just not nearly as big as a Radiohead fan, but definitely dig their work. It's just hard to vote down a band with an album that won Rolling Stone best of the decade (90's). Weezer is good, just not that good. Fun to listen to, but Radiohead is just more complex. I am into that, but would have no problem with a Weezer fan feeling differently, as their body of work is solid as well.

I don't doubt that it takes musical talent to make pseudo intellectual cacaphony. I just don't understand deliberately choosing to listen to it. but there are rush fans and radiohead fans and hipsters of all different shapes and sizes who listen to unhappy sludge for so long they develop a Stockholm syndrome towards their torturers and can't imagine why you wouldn't want to fill your ears with grating voices and dischordant melodies instead of listening to popular music that makes you happy.

You can keep your paranoid android, I've got my hash pipe.

The thing is, Radiohead used to make really good, hooky, catchy songs, with all the great experimentation, textures, etc... But at some point the hooks went away and all that was left was the other stuff.

Good, bad, like, dont like. Erik Satie, Bill Evans, John Coltrane, Beatles, Radiohead - with these guys, all the notes are in the room, but u got no idea how they're gonna be comin at you and, still, you come away humming. Dont know how that's done, just know it's as rare and sweet as it gets.
Love Erik Satie!

Noisy, Hook-less, not radio friendly songs.....

Almost like a musician who wrote some awesome classic, radio friendly music is trying with all his might to do the complete opposite.

Still awesome - maybe even better technical music but, you just might see a slight audience change.

Never got into Radiohead. Perhaps another run through using nice headphones instead of iMac air speakers will help me "get" it.

Weezer wins this easily for me but I am more into guitar based rock. Radiohead has some great songs but it bores me quickly.

Or maybe not. But like a lot of good art, it does usually require your full attention and probably multiple reps before some of the details and context are fully revealed.

Link, por favor? The search function is so good, that I need to ask in a thread for the link :bag:

ETA: OK I see you bumped, thanks! I searched Yacht, got 4 threads: Reminder: Planet Aid (Yellow Donation Bins) a scam, 2010 NHL Playoff, Best albums of 2009, and THE BOOK DRAFT.

I agree with that but Weezer went from My Name is Jonas to Beverly Hills. Oof!

Good answer.

• Weezer apes Radiohead.

• Radiohead would never ape Weezer.

I'm a big fan of Weezer... love their music. Fun, catchy band. That said, a strong case can be made that Radiohead is the most creative/influential band of the last 25 years.

I'm no serious musician, but I've always been under the impression that Radiohead isn't considered a technically superior band. Their praise comes mostly from their creativity. Yorke is a good singer, though.

They are absolutely a technically superior band. Every one of them would be elite session musicians if they so chose.
Yeah... I have no doubt Rivers may be the most book-smart of anyone in the two bands, but I'm not sure anyone would realistically attempt the argument that Weezer are technically superior musicians than Radiohead.

Again, I'm a pretty big Weezer fan. have seen them multiple times live and still listen to their stuff regularly. Pinkerton is my personal favorite album. Bell's dad was a professor at my Alma Mater and had weezer #### all over his office door... so they put on a killer show when in town during my college years.

Saw Radiohead at Shoreline Amphitheater in Cali... insane show. Dying to see them again.

Tied after 40 votes?!

FBG is a weird place.

Weezer is pretty good. Radiohead is so much better.
Silent majorities is part of the reason I thought a poll might be neat. Also, I love both bands. Again. I think my preference is Weezer, but then Paranoid Android and Karma Police as songs qua songs. :loco: Jeebus. I think they're the Beach Boys/Beatles of the '90s, if I may be so reductive.

How can someone not like King of Limbs? What a wonderful album.

Radiohead didn't stop making excellent music in 1997.
There was some weird thing going on with some Radiohead fans when King of Limbs came out. Like they were eager to finally dislike an album. I was surprised by the reception it got because I thought it was pretty damn good. Short and sweet and balanced. And it's aged very well. Wonder how many of the fans who reacted so negatively to it have changed their minds over the past few years.

Karma Police is one song I've never been into. I do understand the love for it. It's got a proven formula at work: slow build, nice peak, percussive piano, a couple sound effects, Thom's soaring vocals.

I heard Radiohead doesn't play Creep live anymore.

Lame.
This is hilarious. Best song they ever did and they hate it.
It got popular with the masses and not just their real fans. Therefore it must be trite.
Or maybe they just don't care for it or feel like playing it. A lot of their stuff is "popular with the masses". They sell out every show they play, so that angle doesn't really hold water.

Far far worse analogies have been made on this forum... I can get on board with that.

Cuomo is on record as actively trying to "Solve" pop music.

Radiohead has made it clear their goals lie in exploration of new musical territory, radio success be damned.

Weezer writes incredibly catchy songs. Radiohead writes beautiful thought-provoking songs.

I've yet to come all the way around on it, but Codex is incredible.

ETA: I think the Beatles/BB analogy works.

Glen Frey said he hates playing Take it Easy and some other old ones. Maybe they are just sick of it.
See? Even the Eagles hate the ####ing Eagles.

Except you are still in the middle of the ###### desert....I mean comparing Weezer to the Beach Boys! That's an insult to the Beach Boys IMO.

Song is just very far from where they are musically right now... would be fun to hear it but can understand why they don't play it.

Creep hasn't been played since Feb of 1998.

They haven't played a cover song live since 2008.
