Well, we've done it. Ringling Brothers has cancelled the circus (1 Viewer)

11, 3 and 7 today at American Airlines Arena in Miami, can't get anyone to go. Last time ever for the Circus although I would say it has changed a lot since I was a kid. Gunther Gaebal or something like that was a big attraction with the lions when I was young.

Are people really at a loss of how to entertain their children without torturing animals?

The animals loved it , they loved it.

one door closes another opens. This gives someone else a chance to reinvent the circus , maybe start fresh with new animals. Go capture a few elephants and train them etc. Maybe get a few chimps like this , the crowds would love them

Really bummed about this. So tired of self appointed morality police deciding what i should or should not be doing/watching/entertained by. I get it, people may not like their product, so don't go.  But if I don't have a problem with it then don't take it way from me.

Discusted.
Yeah you tell 'em!  Slavery too!  If you don't like it, just don't buy slaves dummies!  But don't ruin it for all the people that don't have a problem with it!

Simply because you personally dont have a problem with it means it has to exist? Weird rationale, discusting even.

Love it when people make the animals and people are the same argument.  Do you have a pet?  Shouldn't they be free too??  But since you brought up slavery, yea it still exists and all the people all worried that an elephant has to walk across a circus tent doesn't put 1/100 of the energy into trying to stop human to human slavery.  And it's not some problem in a 3rd world county, the thread here a week ago about domestic human trafficking proves that it's a much larger problem then 5 traveling elephants.

Could be a thing like the Twinkie where they go out of business and then someone swoops in and buys the brand and re-releases it.  A scaled down version should have no problem making it.  There are smaller circuses still in existence. Its not like we don't have circuses anymore.

So now we have established that unless you have personally eliminated human trafficking, you have no right to have moral objections to anything.  Instructive thread.

Definitely could see this. And they'll sell so many tickets these next 3 months that it may be attractive.

"I'm sad that these animals will no longer have to live imhumane lives"

"My kids will never get to see the sadness in these animals' eyes"

This is all I see when I read some of these posts

You couldn't be missing the point more if you tried.

I know nothing about this situation or the animals involved.  It's not even on my radar.  The point was not to compare these animals to human slaves.  The point was to illustrate how massively and utterly ridiculous (and reprehensible) your point was that if people find something morally reprehensible they should just not participate in it and let people who like it go on doing it.

If that were the case there would be no laws.  Don't like dog fighting?  Don't go to dog fights dummy, but don't ruin it for people who like dog fighting!  Don't like rape?  Then don't rape people dummy, but don't ruin it for the people who enjoy rape!

I can't believe that someone would even make the point you're trying to make here.  It's terrifying.

I dont think that's the argument he was making, even if it was you made a terribly discusting comparison.

And anything that limits clown employment is ok by me.
I wonder if the general societal disdain for clowns is a factor, as well. Never really ran into the "I hate clowns / clowns creep me out" stuff until the late 80s. I knew some individuals didn't like clowns, but it seemed like very few back in the day. These days, liking clowns is seen as most weird.

I don't know, but I sure don't think they are an attraction.

Clowns really freaked me out as a kid.  I remember one Barnum & Bailey circus we went to in Springfield, OH.  I was about 4-5 ...we were sitting on in the first row bleachers (feet on the floor), within inches of the actual ring.  This one mother ####### clown comes out of nowhere and jumps in my face to give me a balloon.

I cannot believe I didn't #### my pants.  He was an inch or two from my nose.  Really crusty and gross.  I had nightmares about that for several years.

Instead of traveling...you'd think they'd just setup shop in one location and try to keep it going.

Maybe Vegas or something.

But then again, with increasing pressure and regulations...it may not be a viable option.

I was never afraid of clowns, but I did wonder why the heck an adult would go through such efforts to not be entertaining.  Maybe it's just a relic from a time long ago, but there's nothing entertaining about a clown.

Consumers have other, better options these days. If outdated forms of entertainment can't evolve then they should fade into history. 146 years is a great run.

Yay free market capitalism!
Next big thing to bite the dust: NFL Teams in Los Angeles
