I would have done the same thing, what good could possibly come out of a fight with a drunk idiot on a train?  It could affect your job, your health, spend rest of the night giving a police report.  Pretend you didn’t see it, act stupid, and move on.  It’s a good idea to always put yourself in between other people in public and your girlfriend, this diminishes stuff like this from happening almost every time as the guy would have to walk through you in order to get to her.  It might take a little bit of consciously thinking about it all the time at first, but she will definitely notice and appreciate it.  

Next time try to avoid public transportation at night, especially on the way home as it’s later and people are drunk idiots.

In the summer when it gets warm Beale Street in downtown Memphis is loaded with unsavory characters from the hoods that lie north or south of downtown.

Generally to walk anywhere outside the first half block or so involved walking past lines of these characters leering, catcalling, ### grabbing, etc. Even worse-so than the OP because you’re badly outnumbered by a group of people who have made it no secret they carry guns, dont mind using them, and love ganging up on white guys. Needless to say after one incident (and hearing of others), we stopped going. No way you can say anything in that case. Bars and restaurants started suffering. Some closed. 

Given the tourism money generated by this street, the city wanted to address people feeling unsafe. It became such an issue that they added a $10 cover charge that got you $9 in credit at any vendor/bar on the street. This was immediately called “racist”, naturally. Thankfully the program remains and that subset now cruises riverside drive yelling at, and frequently shooting at, each other. At least it’s not my date or I.
