What are the chances Avril get's traded? (1 Viewer)

I know the Lions put the Franchise Tag on Cliff Avril. It is the non-exclusive variety so he can sign with another team. The Lions then could choose to match it or receive two first round picks as compensation. But according to the link above, Avril and the Lions are far apart on a long term deal. He (Avril) also suggests that a hold out isn't off the table. So I say they try to trade him. It's not likely that he will fit in their long term financial plans anyway. They could try to use him as well as their current first round pick to trade up for someone they really want in the upcoming draft. Or they could trade him for more picks or players to get some added depth. Or maybe, find that diamond in the rough!

I think the chances of Avril getting traded are near zero. You really think they would enter the season with only Vanden Bosch, Jackson, and Young at DE? That would be a massive downgrade.

Does the Everette Brown signing a couple days ago make a difference? Although a trade seems unlikely, signing Brown could be a sign they could try to move Avril. Brown has underachieved so far, but he's young and was considered a first round pick a couple years ago (even though he went in the 2nd). What about trading him for Asante Samuel? Similar cap hit, and I know we tried to get him last year.

Who is going to replace Avril's 10+ sacks? QB pressure is the most important thing for this defense to work. You think the secondary is bad now? Just imagine it with no pass rush...and if you take Avril away, the pass rush goes with him.I honestly don't see why people are in such a hurry to get rid of Avril. I realize the salary is not to everyone's liking, but it is reasonable for a player that hits double-digit sacks and creates turnovers. Pass rushers are very difficult to find, especially 25 year old pass rushers.

I think Avril got the sacks beacuse of the other guys on the line taking so much attention.Bad move to franchise him IMO.
That's definitely an argument. He had 10 sacks his first two years (which is not bad), but 18 or something since Suh and Vanden Bosh came. I'd argue he's just getting better with age. Just to clarify, I don't want to see Avril go anywhere. Just trying to get inside Mayhew's head and see if there's a read through to the Everette Brown signing.

He's a beast, I'm sure a ton of teams would love to trade for him. I doubt the Lions would look to move him, if the offer were right maybe, but I think they'd be dumb to get rid of someone like him...

Whoever they put there will get those. Its not about Avril, its about the rest of the guys on the line that make Avril look better. Avril is looking for way to big of a contract and I dont think the Lions will go for it. He has also made statements earlier on holding out and not signing his franchise tender. I think there is a 75% chance that Avril is traded, and I hope they do if they get even a high 2nd round pick.Schwartz has already gone out and said that Everette Brown reminds him of a young Avril. Seems like this is greasing the skids a little. I think Avril on any other team is lucky to get 3-4 sacks in a season.
