what college football team should i root for? (1 Viewer)

I'm starting to watch college football this year. for the first time ever pending a lock out but i don't know like the teams or anything, thus, i don't know which team to root for. I never had interest rooting for Boston College being not catholic. I was only fortunate to stay in state at a local state college.

I thought about jumping on the UF bandwagon because of BB connection with drafting players from there. Sounds cheesy,though.

 
Generally, either the college you went to or the local school with a decent program. No need for it to be a stellar program, it will make any success that much sweeter if they ever make a bowl game (see my avatar).

If you've made it this far in life without becoming a fan, just pick one you can fake it with. Notre Dame, Miami, and Texas are prime schools for fakers.

I have to disagree with Miami...the team just went downhill the last decade, and I find it hard to be a fan. Unless, by faker you mean fair weather fan, then I totally agree :hophead: Anyways, I like Miami for its rich traditions. ABANDON UF!! the school is useless without tim tebow :excited: The beauty of college football is that there is so many schools, so it is uncommon to have a school that goes to the BCS bowl every year. I suggest whatever your location is select a handful of schools in your division if you don't want to go with the university you attended. Teams I think should be good this year Oklahoma State, Alabama, and Clemson
 
Nebraska should be fun to watch this coming season, since they're joining a brand new conference (Big 10). They've also got an exciting runner at QB and a hard hitting defense. I'd expect high scoring back and forth matchups for the start of the year as Nebraska and the other teams get a feel for each other.

ETA: Their games will also be aired on the Big 10 Network, so it should be easier to see them regardless of where you live.

Not trying to be rude but I can't imagine just starting to root for a team with the snap of your fingers. In all likelihood, you'll get excited at first when the season starts, but then when "your team" is playing the likes of a 1-AA or a Sun Belt school you'll fade because it's boring and you don't have anything invested in the school, like you would if you went there or grew up around them.

My advice would be to pick a conference where you like the style of play best and just watch as many of those games as you can. Even better, there's nothing wrong with just being a college football fan and, again, watching as much as you can. These days there are games on from Wednesday to Sunday most weeks and as time goes on, you'll really learn to appreciate watching even some of the non-BCS schools as some of standout players or unique offenses. Then maybe you end up attached to a certain team.

Well, say what you want about Ohio State's current issues, but we are in a BCS bowl pretty much every year... :boxing: 1996 Rose1997 Sugar1998 Sugar2002 Fiesta (BCS C'ship Game)2003 Fiesta2005 Fiesta2006 BCS C'ship Game2007 BCS C'ship Game2008 Fiesta2009 Rose2010 SugarSooo....in 11 of the past 15 seasons, OSU has been in a BCS bowl. :) So there is one team at least that is an exception to your rule above...EDIT (and if anyone wants to point to our record in those games, we are 7-4 in the above 11 games...)

Your title say's: "I have no clue." If that's true then root for Michigan State...you'll fit right in.

 
OU is my team:

1. I attend OU.

2. Student tickets are cheap.

3. We're really freakin good.

So - I would root for the best local team if you have no football at your alma mater.

 
If you lived in Boston your whole life you have to root for a team in NE. Sorry.

UMass is looking to move up to FBS. If not them, how about UConn?

 
If you have no vested interest in a college your best bet is to just watch it and let your allegiance falls as they may. I personally just like watching good teams play eachother. At this point though I may not watch it ever again. The BCS is the biggest crock of #### there is.

 
Jump into a college FF league, start watching some players and you will start to root for a team or two.

My NFL FF league does a developmental draft picking two college players mid season. All of a sudden I become fans of those two teams....

Although you can always find a reason for a team to follow:

living on the west coast, hating the east coast bias in the polls (real or not), hating UCLA for the destruction they put on my college in another sport in which i played... I end up rooting for USC since they have been competitive recently (until now). Also, having grown up in the 80s, I tend to keep an eye on THE U. Plus I just like saying THE U.

But I dont watch a lot of college for this to mean anything.

 
I live in New Hampshire and like you there is no big team around here. I am a huge college football fan and I don't have one TEAM that I root for above all others as I do in all the other sports. Instead a group of about 10 teams that you root for fairly strongly and 10 teams that you hate. And while I do consider myself an Auburn fan(not just this year) I would have had a hard time rooting against TCU or Boise if they had played them in the championship. While others may say Im not a true fan when I follow the sport this way it is better than rooting for only one team who you may not really love.

 
Christo's incredulity notwithstanding, rooting for a team is way overrated. And, as others have intimated, it's the epitome of knobdom to come in out of the cold and start cheering for one of the factories.

 
I nominate that you become a fan of the Vols, and I will state my case here.

• SEC school, the best conference in the NCAA. Chances of your team winning the NC are higher if you are a fan of an SEC school.

• They have a rich tradition and are a program on the rise after going through some struggle in the past few years. You don't want to just be a fan of a team that is really successful right now, then you would be a bandwagoner.

• They have a new Coach with Derek Dooley, so we have already suffered through the loss of a coach and if you come in right now, you don't have to deal with that. Plus we have a good group of kids there right and are on the right track. We have a good young QB and 2 WR that will ball out of control.

• We have a unique name and a color Orange that is like none others. Also easy to find on TV with the SEC network.

I say choose ND. You get to see your team play every weekend.
 
Unlike pro teams, college teams actually have a meaningful organization behind them. Instead of rooting for silver and black laundry (or worse, for Al Davis), you can root for an institution whose values align with yours. You've already identified that you don't want to root for a Catholic team; that's a start. Do you prefer academic rigor, or a history of football success? Public or private institutions? Research-oriented or teaching-oriented schools?

Once you've thought that through, you're not rooting for laundry.

For me, Berkeley has:

Great public education

World-class research

History of public service

View of football as adjunct rather than core activity

Top-notch college football game day experience (band, stadium, town)

Best logo in football

Go Bears!

 
Living on the West Coast of Canada I have no allegiance to any particular university. The closest university is Washington. When I started to watch college football, I would watch any game that had two teams in the top 25 rankings because I would expect it to be a good game. Then over time my interest became more of watching teams from the Pac 10 because its the closest Conference to where I live. So for a few years I became a fan of USC because they were the dominant team in the Pac 10. With the decline of USC, I became a fan of Oregon this past season because they were the highest ranked team in the Pac 10. The problem with that was the Oregon games weren't always on tv.

 
I have a friend from Vermont who roots for Pitt, although he otherwise generally roots for Boston area teams. He has no connection to Pitt, Pittsburgh, or even Pennsylvania more generally; he just decided to become a Pitt fan one day. Now might be a good time to become a Pitt fan now that the Stache is gone and they are starting a new era with Graham from Tulsa (and I say that as a Rutgers fan). (I'd sell you on Rutgers, but Rutgers has had enough bandwagoners jump on in the past 5 years.)

 
If you want to pull for a team that wins national championships, make sure it is an SEC team. I'd also suggest Alabama. Go to the bookstore or library and get the book Rammer Jammer Yellow Hammer. Read it, and I think you'll choose BAMA.

I resent that. FIU's Bowl game was one of the best game I saw all season :hophead: Just follow the top 10 and whichever college you think will be good that won't make it in the top 25

 
The most important thing is rooting for a team that is within driving distance from your home. I would just ignore the catholic thing and root for BC if I was you. Going to a Boston College games in person a few times a year will be much more fun then just watching them at home. You could also pick UConn/Army/Navy/Maryland/Rutgers/Syracuse/Temple/Pitt or Penn State. If your committed to your couch you can just do what I do. I go out and have fun Saturday afternoon and when I come home I watch the Saturday night game on ABC. It's usually a very high profile game with future NFL stars and it's a cool way to follow college football without giving up my whole weekend.
