What do Jason Taylor, Jerry Rice, and Emmitt Smith (1 Viewer)

Yes, they will all be known by a huge chunk of the population not by their accomplishments on the football field, but by their skills on the dance floor.

It was announced on Monday that Jason Taylor will be the first active football player to appear on "Dancing with the Stars", scheduled to start airing in March.

As a Dolphins fan, I'm both apalled and intrigued.

I guess he's already looking towards life after football and wants to start getting some greater name/face recognition for when he goes Hollywood...

I was going to go with "Players who refused to leave the game gracefully" but I guess the "right" answer is embarrassing for their fans as well.

I'm a dolphins fan and what do I need to be embarrassed about? Same can be said about Taylor.............So he gets to spend time getting in great shape and dancing with some hot chick........I think if giving the chance and getting paid to do so, almost any guy would sign up for that!!!!

Then end is near for Taylor in terms of playing football. He is trying to get his mug out there on TV to hook himself up for the impending doom of retirement/being cut. Its obvious playing football for the Phins is not his #1 priority.

crazy talk............i love how athletes are suppose to live, eat , and sleep football...........However i do think his days are numbered in Miami. I expect him to be traded before the draft or on draft day....He still has football left...........

It will be great to bump this thread next year when Strahan gets on the show. I'm not sure what the insult even is. It's funny that Emmitt can dance and rub up against a super hot and young chic?I know most of you guys think dancing is gay, but MOST girls don't think the same way.

Not to drag this, but it is the offseason. It's not that I think dancing is "gay", it's that I think putting some celebrities on a stage to dance or sing or sticking them in a "reality house" and watching them yell or talk about their feeling is about as base a form of entertainment television as you can get and I hope that the athletes that I root for have more respect for themselves then to be a part of it. It's not like they need the money.

It's lazy, easy TV. There's a reason that about a dozen new dance competitions popped up when the writers went on stike.

Whatever these guys like to do in their spare time is great; dancing, swimming, cooking, riding a bike... it's all good. Doesn't mean that I should want them to do it on TV.

whether you think Dancing with the Stars is lame or not, I can't blame Jason Taylor for doing this. He's a very popular and well spoken player, and on top of that, the ladies seem to love him. He's in a prime position to establish himself as a "celebrity" once his career is over...The only thing he needs is more exposure to that half of the country who may not watch or care about the NFL, but who may care about and watch Dancing with the Stars... Jerry Rice has himself said that he gets a lot of "fans" who recognize him not for being a football star, but for being on that show...so go figure. It seems like a decent career move for someone who doesn't have many years left in the NFL.

Furthermore, I disagree with those who say that football isn't a top priority for him anymore... The show runs from March to May during a time when he wouldn't be missing any mandatory offseason camps. The guy is a proven, Hall of Fame caliber player (whether he makes it to the Hall or not is a top for another discussion), and so as Michael Strahan showed last year, I doubt that he needs a whole lot of offseason work to get into game shape. Whether he's a Miami Dolphin or not, I can guarantee that once July rolls around, his full attention will be on football... in 2006, JT was going through an ugly divorce from his wife, and that season he ended up winning NFL Defensive Player of the year, so I highly doubt that two months of offseason dancing will affect his play on the football field whatsoever.

I know what they DON'T have in common.

I hope that JT sticks around with the Dolphins long enough to help him fix that problem. Of course that might not happen for another 10-15 years.
