What do you do? - driving question (1 Viewer)

Same situation except there are 5 cars in left lane (you'll be 6) and 0 in right lane.

  • Stay in left lane and be 6th car in line.

You're in the left lane of a road that has 2 lanes going your direction. You approach a stoplight that adds a separate left turn lane. The stoplight is just turning red and you plan to continue going straight. There is 1 car in front of you also in the left lane also going straight, so you'll be 2nd in line waiting at the light. The right lane is empty. There is some traffic a little behind you so more cars will soon be stopping at the red light with you.

What do you do?

I stay to the left because it's usually the faster lane and I won't have to slow down for anybody pulling out or making a right turn. Exception is if there's an 18 wheeler in front of me.

I said stay in left lane, because you don't add info about right turn on red or separate lane for right turn. Blocking people from making a right turn is kinda obnoxious; especially in situation #1.

Since the light just turned red, I must have been closely following the car in front of me. It must have been going fast enough that I didn't feel a need to pass it on the right earlier. So why switch lanes now?

Will usually get over if it's not going to make somebody jump on their brakes.
This. Take the open lane if it's safe to do so.
I don't see why not
Would your answer be any different if you looked in your rear view before changing lanes, and saw the car you'd be pulling in front of has his turn signal on to turn right at the light?
Yes. I actually move over for cars and creep left so they can turn right where right on reds are appropriate.

I'm a considerate dude. :D

This is my thought process as well.

I always try to get in the left lane at a light when both lanes are open just to leave the right open for anyone that may arrive while the light is still red.

I always appreciate it when someone does that for me.

What really pisses me off are the jerks that take the open lane when it is very clearly marked that the open lane merges into the other lane to form a single lane road just after the light.

I'd get in the far left lane as if I was turning left and then gun it at the green light to get in front of all the other drivers continuing straight. D'uh.

Depends. Am I turning soon? Is there much traffic in front of us? has the guy in front of me been driving fast enough where I won't be waiting?

What really pisses me off are the people who stay in the left lane as they approach the traffic signal but stop multiple vehicle lengths back of the vehicle in front of them at a red. Those inconsiderate ####s take up enough space that someone coming up to that intersection needing to get into the left turn lane can't because they're stuck back beyond where the left turn lane even begins. It never ceases to amaze me how oblivious and/or d-bagish people are when they won't even move up a few feet to let someone get past them into the left turn lane.

I normally try to leave the right lane so people can turn right on red. Made the poll after an incident last night. Late enough there weren't many cars on the road, just three of us approaching a light as it turned red. Car swerves over in front of me into the right lane to make sure he gets the front spot. Had my blinker on already. He could have just let me go past and make my right on red and he still would have gotten the front spot.

Agreed, this is the other one for me like this. After about the 3rd time of missing a stoplight when the guy in front could have made room for me to get into the left turn lane, I try to make sure I leave room for others, including edging to the right of my lane. I don't know whether other people are just oblivious to these things, or don't care about other people or what.

If they cared they wouldn't be oblivious

I think most people guilty of what we're talking about are oblivious. They're wrapped-up in their own world (where they're completely entitled) and basically say #### everyone else. Then there are those who are completely aware of what they are doing and are just being a #### to say #### everyone else.

Yes. I am an exceedingly courteous driver. If someone signals his intention to me, I will yield almost every time.

Which is worse? The person who sort of negligently doesn't care or the one who intentionally says #### you?

All I know is I would like to choke them equally hard.

Depends on the chance of keeping someone from going right on red.

Although, the longer the line is, the higher chance some idiot is on their cell phone and not paying attention when the light turns green. As that risk goes up, so do the chances that I take the open lane.

Always take the open lane. Even if the car in front of me has been going at an acceptable speed, I get off the line like Big Daddy Don Garlits. :drive:

my rust bucket car is a pile of crap so i stay over by the side and then when it brakes down i just sort of coast over to the side and be nice and get out of the way assuming a wheel did not fall off which i had happen one time and that time i just ssort of had to stop because three wheels does not coast real well anyhow basically i could use a new car take that to the bank bromigos

Turning right on red should be illegal. Very rarely do people come to a full stop anyway.
Wut?
Yeah, that's dumb. A lot of people do treat it as a yield sign, though.

On a related topic, very few drivers seem to know you can turn left on red from a one-way street to a one-way street.
Probably because that is a very rare scenario.

I personally dont recall ever seeing something like that.

I'm guessing you're mostly going to see it in some of the larger metro downtown areas. Like downtown Houston many of the streets are one way, alternating which direction they go as you drive from one to the next. Does Denver have an area like that too? Been too long since my brief stay there to remember for sure.
