What does the NFL categorize Hester's TD as? (1 Viewer)

What exactly does the NFL call returning a FG? It doesn't seem like it's a kick return. Do they count it as a punt return? Or is it return yardage of the same type as a blocked FG would be?

NFL.com has it in the Play by Play but otherwise they are making no mention of it at all in the team stats or gamecenter.... they only show 4 Chicago TDs but have the score correct.

In my league it does not count as a Def TD.

I think the rules are a special team TD, similar to a blocked kick returned for a TD. It is my best guess.

Should fall under the Chicago "Defense/Special Teams" as a TD. In my CBS Sportsline league, it hasn't been credited to the defense as of yet.

basically the bermuda triangle of scoring unless you specify it beforehand or count EVERY type of return that can possibly be made.

That doesn't help for leagues that don't have generic "special teams" as a unit. My league has IDPs and then has a team kick return unit. But I don't think MFL even has a "Missed Field Goal return" scoring category.Well, I guess the resolution for my league is clear anyway, as we give 6 pts to the player any TD other than kickoff/punt return, which go to the team unit. Long as it isn't termed a kickoff or punt return then the only way anyone would score it would be if they started Hester as a CB, which I don't think anyone did.

Let's break this down even more. Is this a Chicago ST TD or a Chicago D TD?
That's up to your individual league's rules.I don't use team defenses in my own leagues, nor special team units that aren't specific like "kick return unit". But if I was using them I always suggest using "if a kick took place it is a special teams play, if not it is a regular offense/defense play". Then it is very straightforward what the answer is for any play. But, whatever your league rules say would be what you would have to go with.

The NFL has officially classified 3 seperate untisl. Defense, offense, and free kick. The FG defense unit is actually the defensive unit thus it's a defensive TD. Kick-offs and free kicks after a fair catch are neither defense or offense. That's it.

Do you have a link to this? Googled to no avail. Sorry, i'm a commish trying to make a decision.

what word is this - untisl? Units? it's a pretty important part of your post. There are three units - offense, defense and ST. This is a ST play.

A free kick is the term used for the kick after a safety, and apparently a kickoff.

11. Free Kick: A kickoff or safety kick. It may be a placekick, dropkick, or punt, except a punt may not be used on a kickoff following a touchdown, successful field goal, or to begin each half or overtime period. A tee cannot be used on a fair-catch or safety kick.
http://nfl.com/news/rulesdigest.htmlCommissioners - let your scoring system make the decision and correct it tonight or tomorrow night before going and trying to interpret the NFL rules. you pay a hosting service to already do it.

leave it alone for now!!!

FWIW, this is RTSports view:

The Chicago Bears 108-yard missed field goal TD return has been interpreted as an offensive special teams touchdown. This intepretation stems from the fact that during a field goal the kicking team is on offense until the ball passes the line of scrimmage. At that point the kicking team becomes the defensive unit (and hence cannot recover or advance the kick unless the opposing team touches it first.) If your league does not agree with this decision the commissioner may always manually adjust any teams score at any time.

In essence, this is the same as a kickoff return TD, with the points awarded based on your rules for a kick return TD and subsequent length.

As a note from FLM (Edit to confirm, this explanation is also the official stance for MFL as well) regarding the TD:

Jay Feely (NYG) Missed a 52 yard Field Goal attempt, and Devin Hester (CHI) Returned it 108 yards for a TD. Since neither our stats provider nor our site has a separate scoring rule for “Missed Field Goal Return TD,” this TD has been scored as a “Blocked Field Goal Return TD” without any corresponding block.

I hoping CBS will adjust the Bears def/spec team totals by adding a special team's TD. They haven't made that adjustment as of yet...........................

CBS has it correct in my league. Well, everywhere except the GameCenter. But everywhere else, it's correct. In our standings, correct point total listed on the league schedule, player rankings, etc...
