What Formula Do You Use 2 Calculate Auction Values (1 Viewer)

Hey I was curious if any of you guys have a specific formula to determine a players value in an Auction style draft.

Is there a good formula used so that I can set my own values for an auction, rather then pulling a list from a website.

I think having your own values is a key in an auction draft, especially if 2 or 3 guys are using the same value list to determine a players value.

So is there a formula I can use?

The Draft Dominator can calculate auction values for you based on your league's scoring system. IMO it overvalues bench players, especially RBs.

You could also resort last years auction prices if you're in the same league (same rules, coaches, etc.)

Auction values in a keeper league can get really skewed based on supply and demand.

Case in point is a 12 team $200 auction cap league where top 10 RB salaries can range from $50-$100. Having just expanded from 10 to 12 teams, two owners have alot of cash and no keepers.

If 8 of the top 12 RB's are kept, the 12th ranked RB could go at auction for top $ simply because he is a must have for an owner without one. Pre-draft, an owner might keep the 12th RB for more $$ than usual for the same reason, rather than risk not being able to afford one at acution.

It's what makes an auction league more dynamic IMHO...and helps keep the antacid peeps in business. :loco:

Are you sure you want to get into this? The short answer is that there are a variety of formulas, and all of them have their flaws, some of which are very significant.

The long answer can be found by searching for threads with keywords like VBD, auction, formula, and value.

Good luck :banned:

Drafting is an art, not a science. Anyone pretending otherwise is severely deluded. ie don't waste your time with "formulas."

Right, because the less information you have, the better.

You mean auctioning, right?I tend to come up with my own auction values using previous experience and gut feel. During the auction I track the spending vs my values to get a feel for if the auction is over or under budget in relation to my values.

There are probably more than I'd care to think about and every one mostly if not entirely a waste of time.Sorry but "formula" and "fantasy football" just don't go together. Crunching some numbers has some value, but that value is IMO usually very overrated.

There is no one approach that covers everything.

Simply I do this:

1- by position divide players by ranks where you feel they are of about equall value.

2 - decide where you will spend your money. How much are you willing to pay for players at that position at that level. Set the uppper limit you will spend there before looking at players at the next lower level at that position because they now have more value.

3 - work your plan.

not prefect but atleast you will not get totally hosed.

As others have posted there are some pretty detailed discussion on this if you follow the posted links or just do some searches.BUT the most important thing is YOUR league context, which nobody here could know about. For a simple way to do that, look at your league's scoring from last year and get the total number of points scored and then break it down by position:

ie - how many points scored by QB?; RB?

Then get the percentage for each position.

This is only going to work in a redraft league btw, keeper leagues are entirely different.

Now apply your leagues scoring percentages to your budget - if 40% of the points were scored by RB and your budget is $200 then you should have a budget of at least $80 for running backs.

You will take away dollars from Kickers and Defensive Teams as those can always be had in an auction for a buck or two.

You can usually take away money from the QB position as well and beef up the RB and WR budgets.

Good Luck
