What happened to NASA? (1 Viewer)

Moongate is what happened.

Nothing but a dog and pony show to syphon more funds to the elite and the black budget.

Many of the technological advancements you enjoy today can trace their roots to development in the space program

I'm not really in favor of giving Musk $20 billion a year of our money so can come up with ways to get even wealthier.
I don't know, his wealth seems to be just the by product of a crap ton of hard work, dedication and passion.   It seems like that if we're going to be spending that much public money, he's exactly the type of guy I'd like to see spending it.  While we're at it, we should probably give him some of the $30B that goes to the department of energy.

The space program was crushed with and slashed funding.

They still do a ton of air work and other stuff though

He shot a car into space that will either crash into the sun, earth or on Mars- contaminating the planet with alien microbes. We are turning over our whole space program to him after that publicity stunt?

Damn white folk. It's like the Indians and small pox blankets all over again.

LIES! It is from an iced over NBE1 that Captain Witwicky found. I saw it on a documentary once.

I thought they were aiming for Mars but overshot and now it is headed to some asteroid belt?

Per the story I linked, that probably won't happen. The article has a drawing showing the anticipated orbit.
Also didn't say it would crash into anything and pollute it. That's the link I was looking for from ilove80s

Can you imagine our civilization being destroyed and a thousand years from now the successor civilization finding this freaking car with a freaking mannequin in the driver seat and trying to figure out what the hell it is all about?! :lmao:

2-6% chance in tens of millions of years is what you're worked up about? So your statement was wrong. It's not 'it will crash' it's it likely won't crash into anything.
I'm not worked up- I'm wondering why that was so impressive than someone suggested turning over our annual $20 billion NASA budget to him.

other than the fact they he successfully launched a payload into space with reusable boosters at a fraction of the expense that our government currently pays to launch satellites?

using his delivery system, we would save about half a billion dollars per launch versus the US's current military contract for payload delivery.  NASA is at about $8 billion on developing its own heavy-lift system, with no successful launches and no viable dates scheduled.

1) Considering all that he's been through getting SpaceX to where its at, he's certainly entitled to a little fun.  2)   I don't think cheap (relatively speaking) publicity stunts are such a bad thing if it means greater public interest in space exploration especially if that public interest means greater funding.

We already saved Tesla and SpaceX. Musk is smart but he's had plenty of budget/money issues himself. I'm fine with the current arrangement: he comes up with something cool, gets to the verge of bankruptcy and we bail him out with a loan.

Plus, the car was being used as ballast anyways. The weight was needed, so why not use his car?

Wait.... do you mean to tell me a private independent entrepreneur is able to do something more effectively, efficiently, quickly and cooler than a government agency can? I'm going to have to sit down and try to wrap my head around this.

They had to send a dummy payload. That he has a sense of humor and can identify a good marketing opportunity are not liabilities.

I'm all for space exploration and find myself interested in the newest innovations and technologies, but China landing astronauts on the moon 60 years after the US did it doesn't really excite me as much as I guess it should.

Much prefer we spend the money taking better care of this planet and better care of the people who inhabit it, especially those who can't take care of themselves.  Let the megabillionaires finance space exploration.

it was a bit tongue in cheek there.  I know the space race is over, but hot damn.  We went from nowhere to the moon in 11 years during the 50s and 60s.  Its going to take China 12+ to do it from 2010s-30s with a boatload of more technology. Pretty impressive.
