What has happened to O. Smith (1 Viewer)

With all his talent Im suprised there has been no mention of him what so ever.

I was just wondering if anyone knows anything about his situation. Can he be the SOD again?

I read awhile back he has been working out big time and he's in good shape and just trying to get his life back together. Not sure if he is in the Vikings plans; the new coach made no mention of him when discussing his RBs. Who knows if he will even be reinstated this year.

No mentioning is actually a good thing. It means he hasnt gotten into any more trouble yet.

The new Vikings staff has said that they will give him a clean slate to start with. Its obvious though that they are looking elsewhere for a starter.

I've read that Smith is a free agent. I wasnt aware that a year long suspension counted towards a contract. This would mean he could sign with anybody. Whether he's a restricted free agent or unrestricted, I'd have to look up.

I dont expect any team to count on him as their starter this year. He should have no trouble finding a backup job though as long as he's staying out of trouble.

If he is a restricted free agent he will have to be given a tender before long - otherwise I believe he becomes a unrestricted free agent

The saying is "Out of sight, out of mind!" Thus, until he returns not much to talk about or speculate on. Can't remember where I read that Minny is going under teh assumption that he won't be back w/ them now. Found it interesting to say the least...

I realize that Ricky William's conduct has nothing to do with O. Smith's decision making. Nonetheless, if I were an NFL GM or coach, Ricky Williams would be a wake up call to deter me from putting too much faith in someone who is 1 strike away from being suspended for an entire season. If for that reason alone, I don't see any team putting themselves in the position of relying on Smith as a starter, for this season or any season any time soon.

I think teams will be smarter in that they will make sure they have a decent backup, while not investing a ton of money into a player like O. Smith. He'll probably get a 1-2 yr deal for starters, then if he shows that he's changed and performs...get a new limited type deal. No team should put all their eggs into one of those baskets (risky players). Then again, teams always think they can change a player because of a new environment... blinded by the athleticism and potential the talent can bring to them.

O. Smith is an Unrestricted FA this year. But First he has to be reinstated form his suspension. The Viking expressed no interest in resigning him because report are that they are looking at FA RBs and RBs in the draft. The RBs under contract to them Moore and Faison. Latest rumor concerning VIKING RBs was they were interested in lenDale White and Jamal Lewis and some other FA big power backs

Risk of signing a player with susbtance abuse history is much greater risk of signinig a player with bad attitude.
Yeah, but they appear to want to take that risk w/ KRob. He has had numerous drug related issues...

K-Rob is a drop away from a yearlong suspension

The Whiz is a toke away for a lifelong suspension

K-Rob only got a one year deal - what do you think the Whiz will get...

PS IIRC Onterrio had an attitude as well...

I'm not sure I agree with that, although this is obviously something to take on a case-by-case basis. No player with a substance abuse history has destroyed an entire team's season the way TO just did the Eagles.

You would think that some team out there is trying to get O.Smith and Davenport to share their backfield duties.....talk about a 1-2 combination!

2 second pause before it hit me.

I'm all about appealing to the lowest common denominator :D

Quality bathroom humor. Nice touch with 'backfield duties' and '1-2.'As for the future of the Whizz, the window of opportunity for players is small, and he's, um, pissed away his chance. Teams won't commit a starting role to him again. Though he had promise, he had too little overall track record to make him worth the risk.

Thanks, not sure how many people would catch that one.Seriously though, this tandem could be fantastic. Smith could really get an offense into the flow by squirting through the seams, then Davenport would add that explosive short yardage plunge, as well as catch the occasional dump off. These two could lead a team all the way to the 'Bowl.

( Shoulda done the Costanza and left on a high note :bag: )

O Smith has become the worst kind of risk for a team to count on. He knew he was one strike away from a year long suspension, yet appears not to care enough either to stop smoking dope or publicly carry around devices designed specifically to fool drug tests. Unlike Ricky, he has shown little or no indication that he will or even can give up the weed. Ricky, at least, seems to have put the weed aside. It is just a matter of time before Smith trips up for good. At best, he will be a low paid part of a RBBC.

I think I heard Ricky just failed another drug test.

even if he loses that appeal he will only be where the Whiz is now - one missed or failed test away from a lifelong ban (apart from not actually playing in 2006)
