What is Josh Hamilton worth now? (1 Viewer)

General Malaise

He batted cleanup over the weekend and with Encarnacion air mailing throws and Griffey less than tough as nails, it's a pretty good bet that Hamilton will play nearly every day going forward.

But what is he worth in trade right now? I just got an offer and I turned it down. David Weathers for Josh Hamilton. Now, I could use the saves as I'm worried about Toress losing his gig soon and the only other closer I have is Chris Ray. But I couldn't pull the trigger on this thing. Weathers is decent, but the upside on Hamilton is....well. You tell me?

I know there's a Hamilton thread right now, but what is he worth currently? Have you guys seen him go in trades? What would GIVE to get him and what would you TAKE to get him?

This is NOT a keeper league.

Mixed league, 14 teams standard 5x5 sub OBP for Avg.

My main worry is having Toress go back to set up with Capps taking over leaving me with one closer....

I would have turned the trade down as well. Do you need the stick? IF so, just keep him and ride him while you can. If you don't need the stick, trade him for the best pitcher you can find. I am in a keeper league and the Hamilton owner is NOT selling.

I'm pretty good offensively, though I am nearly last in stolen bases (which should correct some when Figgins comes off the DL for me). I think Hamilton has great value now, but might have more in a month or so.

But he also carries a lot of risk. Cocaine isn't the easiest thing to walk away from and if I'm not mistaken, didn't he also dabble with heroin? And also, what if he can't sustain this hot start? Pitchers are bound to start catching up to him, though he's been able to hit just about everything his seen to this point.

I don't know....I do know he's worth more than Weathers. But how much more? If you were deep closers, what would you be willing to part with?

What does Encarnacion have to do with Hamilton? Not getting picky here....just not sure what the correlation is. I don't think Hamilton can play 3B, can he?

The connection with 3rd base is that if Edwin sits, Freel plays 3rd and Hamilton starts in center.

As a Reds fan, I would expect this to become the norm.

:goodposting: Sorry, I should have included that in the explanation. From what I've read, Freel is fielding a lot of grounders.

Who are some pitchers that you think could be had for Hamilton?
Good question. If I were to trade Hamilton in the only league I own him, I would want a closer. I'm good at SP with a 1-2 punch of Santana and Cain and I've got good filler. I love Chris Ray and consider him a Tier II closer. And while Soloman Torress has been pretty solid with saves, he's not blowing people away and I do worry that Capps will take over soon.Could I fetch a top tier closer in return? Maybe not in the class of Wagner, Street, Nathan or Pappelbon, but in the mold of a Chris Ray, Trevor Hoffman or JJ Putz?Or am I on crack and is Hamilton worth much more than that at the rate he's going?

I could have traded for him in a start 22, 10 team NL only league. Deal would have essentially been Smoltz for Hamilton and Dave Roberts. I opted for Duncan and Duffy instead. Don't get to crazy, he's not going to keep up his current pace. Though he does seem like a player with a legit shot at 90/30/100/15, he's not worth a frontline closer or SP by himself at this time. Its a hot start, not necessarily a portent of things to come.

on crack at this point.two options really:1 - ride him while he's hot2 - dump him for a tier III guy, like you said. i probably woudn't trade ray for him. maybe you can get someone like putz as i don't even think he's had a save chance yet. he'll get his 30.

Well, I got rid of him. After seeing that Chris Ray allowed a GS to Willy Mo Pena coupled with another blowup by Torres, I had enough.

I offered the last place team Josh Hamilton and Solomon Torres for...

Mariano Rivera.

I didn't think he'd bite, but this morning, Rivera was mine. I hate giving up on Hamilton, but my closer situation looked grim after last night's performance by Ray. Hamilton was a late round gamble by me and Torres was a middle of the pack closer pick. I got a guy who was the 3rd or 4th Closer off the board. I'm pretty stoked, but I'm gonna hate watching Hamilton win ROY this year.

When I first read the thread title, I thought it said "Josh Hancock" instead of "Josh Hamilton".

I was about to come in here and report the OP, but then I used a key skill I learned long ago. When you are really mad, make sure you are right about what you're mad about. Sure enough, I was wrong and a trainwreck of stupidity was once again diverted.

OK, carry on.

:boxing: I would hope my reputation isn't that bad around here...
