What is the potential value/upside of Andrew Quarless? (1 Viewer)

After watching Quarless come in off the bench and catch 4 balls for 51 yards last Sunday I'm seriously considering dropping one of my two rostered TE's for this guy.

1. Rodgers at QB.....and he looks for his Tight Ends

2. Beat up defense.....most likely meaning higher scoring games

3. Quarless is fast, athletic, and has good hands

But, Quarless is suspect in the run blocking department and what happens when Lee comes back?

IF he keeps the job.........my guess is that he has upside potential that puts him just above the Winslow's and Moeaki's of the world (based on the reasons I listed above....not on talent alone), but obviously less than Gates, Cooley, Miller, Davis, Clark, etc.

Any Packer insiders.........or others with thoughts/info?

They will use Quarless in passing situations and in a lot of the formations that they used Finley in. When they need a blocker they will bring in Crabtree.

:goodposting: THey liked Quarless because of that athleticism that gave them a sort of Finley handcuff. He is not as good or polished yet being a rook...but he can make some plays and we already saw Rodgers looking to him a bit.

Surprising how many owners are bidding big bucks for him on waivers. In a 12 team league, he won't be startable this year. Even Finley owners likely had a backup TE who would be more consistent than Quarless. And yes Donald Lee will be back in a few weeks.

Why not? In his first game out there Rodgers seemed to have no problem looking his direction.

Yeah but now we need a backup to that backup and Quarless seems about as good as any other option available (Scaife, Fasano, etc..)

Including at least one target in the endzone, it was defended well and incomplete...but still

What are the chances that he keeps his role once Lee is ready to go?
The Packers haven't really been comfortable with lee for years. The kid has a shot if he shows something the next few weeks. My hunch is they will split a lot when he comes back.

Lee isn't very good in the passing game anymore. Not that he was ever very good at all. Quarless will get a pretty good look this year. I think he'll be just as good of a start as anybody in that average TE pile.

More on Lee - looks like he's playing. May want to halt the Quarless train.

The Green Bay Packers received a double dose of good news Thursday as quarterback Aaron Rodgers and tight end Donald Lee returned to practice, moving both a step closer to starting Sunday against the visiting Miami Dolphins.

Rodgers sustained a concussion during this past Sunday's loss at Washington and did not practice Wednesday. He and Lee were among 14 players who were listed on the Packers' injury report.

"Aaron was limited today; we'll see as far as Sunday," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "The protocol (for returning to the field) has been completed."

According to NFL guidelines for head injuries, Rodgers must be symptom-free and cleared by a team doctor and independent neurological consultant before he can play again.

The team did not go through any full-contact team drills.

"Practice was cut back for overall team concern, the health of our team," McCarthy said.

Lee sustained a chest injury early in Sunday's game and left for good after catching a touchdown pass.

"I'm optimistic (Lee will play) based on what I saw today," McCarthy said.

Two players who practiced Wednesday did not participate on Thursday -- defensive lineman Mike Neal and linebacker Brandon Chillar.

Donald Lee (chest) made a surprising return to Packers practice Thursday.

Lee was originally expected to miss at least two weeks, so the injury must have turned out to be minor. If he ends up playing this week, it makes Andrew Quarless a less desirable fantasy option. It's worth noting, though, that Quarless was threatening to bypass Lee before Jermichael Finley went down.

With Lee back, scratch the above. Certainly not dropping either of my two rostered TE's now. Lets see how it goes this Sunday and evaluate on Monday.

On some Packers message boards I have been looking at, fans have been saying in recent weeks (before Finley's injury) that Lee should be cut (and bemoaning that Spencer Havner was cut). I'm finding it quite hard to decide whether Lee or Quarless is likely to be the more serviceable TE for the rest of the season. Quarless looks to have much more upside as a receiver, but Lee is the veteran and if he is going to get a lot more snaps he could have more short-term value and he does look as if he's going to be ready this weekend. Anyone have any further thoughts on this? My suspicion is that they will share snaps, as the previous poster suggested, and neither will have much value, but I'm not sure about this.

My best guess is the Pack will give Q every chance to snag the lion's share of targets/snaps from Lee.

The biggest factor is if he can do some/any blocking IMO.

If Q fugs up some key blocks then that will greatly weaken his value and opps.

Links to these message boards please?Would be really interested to read what Packers fans are saying about Lee vs. Quarless.

http://www.packerforum.com/f8/release-dona...-now-23284.html was one I was looking at (this thread came before the injury to Finley), though on a few other boards Lee didn't seem especially popular in terms of what he had to offer at this stage of his career.

I was surprised Havner was cut...of course, he is now hurt and available. On Lee vs. Quarless. Its an odd comparison. Lee is more the blocker. Not nearly as athletic and is no mis match for anyone. Decent redzone target I guess...but he still is not real big there. Quarless is Finley lite (very lite at this point). More of that brand of TE. Big and fast with good hands and very athletic. He is not a grinder in the blocking game which could limit his snaps. But right away Rodgers was looking to him and throwing to him...even in the endzone. Thats a pretty good sign there. The problem with Quarless will be if the line is not holding up...his snaps will be limited for Lee and Crabtree who are both better blockers.

Lee is worthless. Quarless has a chance to be a startable TE between now and week 16. Lets not forget the guy is a rookie. He's easily they most athletic TE on the active roster for the Pack right now. I have a feeling they will get him more involved in the offense as the season progresses. However, I'm not sure that he's a worthwhile dynasty stash at this point. Finley will be the #1 TE next year. In redraft I'd rather have Scheffler or the like for now.
