What percent of your cap? (1 Viewer)

For those of you in auction leagues...

1. How much of your auction cap goes to RB, QB, WR and TE? (Try to post percents not $$ as everyones cap is different)

2. Are super stars like LT and S. Jackson worth 50% of your cap?

3. Are RBs like T. Henry worth 30% of your cap?

4. Do you subscibe to the theory of buy high for stars and then buy very low for your depth. or Spend market value for all and try to build a solid all around team?

I personally don't believe in dumping half my cap on one player, even if it is LT - although someone in my league does it every year. (IIRC, the LT owner has only won the title once in the last 5 years, but they're always in the playoffs.) I generally try to pay market value on a couple of stars and pick up one or two key bargains. (Last year I picked up Gore for 5% of my cap - yes I won.) I don't spend much on depth, but I do want one quality backup at each position.

I definitely think Travis Henry warrants a 30% cap expense - I expect him to be a top 10 back.

You buy for value, but remember that players sitting on your bench have 0 value. I can't understand anyone not using draft dominator for an auction draft. I put in my own projections, but you can use any of 5 FBGers. Put in your league rules and then use Maurile's baselines (though I change kicker to 1 and defense to 3). This will give you a realtime value for each player based on your projections. Then, I use percentages based on my tiers - I'll pay full value for my top tier RBs, 95% of value for 2nd teir RBs and 1st tier WRs, 90% for other starters including QBs. Using DD at the auction allows you to adjust players prices to changing auction conditions. Therefore, if a stud LT presents himself at my calculated value (appx 83 for a 200 cap), I'd buy him. That won't happen with LT in any of my 4 auctions. But I bet I get Frank Gore in at least 3 of them given how my values work out.As to your supposition that you want %es instead of dollar values. Can't do that. In a $50 cap league LT has to go for a smaller percentage of the cap because bottom players take so much of the cap. The higher the cap, the more you spend on studs. In a typical $200 cap league LT is going for 89, in a $500 cap league he is going for 260 because you still have a better percentage of money to spend on other players and the distribution isn't equal.

Last year I made a gambit to lock up the RB position. In a 12 team $200 cap keeper league with LJ/$11, TO/$25, & CTaylor/$5 as keepers I caught people by suprise going after LT when everyone thought I was just driving his price up. I landed him for a pricey $101 and took the championship.Last years percentages:QB- 13%RB- 57% (LT 50%)WR- 22%TE- 2%K- 3%D- 3%Since the Padre went for in the $90's we have had a RB go for over 45% every year. Depending on supply and demand #1 backs can easily go for 30%. In keeper leagues sometimes you have to pay through the nose to keep pace. Our league is atypical, though in that we only have 3 FA moves per team for the season to go along with injury moves. We can't simply go adding and dropping to pick up the flavor/player of the week to bail us out. Trades go down but they are not as frequent as I would like to see. A good draft is key.

My guess is you actually got LT at a discount. If other owners had 1 player each who were half the bargain you had with LJ you removed 400 worth of value from your auction (LJ alone removed $60 worth of value). If thats the case you have 2000$ bidding for $1600 of value, everyone goes up by 20%, but like I stated earlier value spreads at the top. People always misprice players in keeper leagues.

Paying for studs seems to work well in our league. I get the sense that it's that way in most. It's not something I've done before because I hate having that much risk tied up in a couple players, but I've been losing in the first round of the playoffs a lot in recent years, so I decided to make my change.

I spent 60% of my cap on Steven Jackson & Travis Henry. FWIW, our league is a PPR for WR/TE, so the receivers usually go for more in our league than they might in most.

I'm avoiding peyton, LT2, Sjax and gates as I think they will generally be over paid for. I have a $ value for each player that I will pay but I just think it's unlikely

that I'll get those guys for what I'm willing to pay.

I'm targetting 50% RB, 25-30% WR, 10-20% QB and 5-10% for TE, DEF and K combined. I'm also targetting 75-80% of cap for starters and 15-20% for bench players.

Here's my team from the latest mock I did following that strat. I think it looks ok. What do you guys think?

$

20 QB Marc Bulger

38 RB Reggie Bush

44 RB Travis Henry

23 WR Javon Walker

9 WR Laveranues Coles

24 WR T.J. Houshmandzadeh

7 TE Vernon Davis

1 K Neil Rackers

2 DEF Miami Dolphins

7 B-QB Tony Romo

2 B-RB DeShaun Foster

1 B-RB Chris Henry

18 B-RB Carnell Williams

2 B-WR Santonio Holmes

2 B-WR Jerricho Cotchery

Those prices are RIDICULOUSLY low for Bush, Walker, Coles, Foster, Romo, Holmes and Cotchery

It was the result of the fact that the top RBs, WRs and QBs all went too high, which creates value later in the draft. 50% of the cap for LT, 45% for SJ and 40% for LJ takes a lot of money off the table. Also, it seems like MyFBG values for the guys you mention are very different than a lot of consensus values out there. I like the FBG values.

Depends on 1 QB or 2.

1 QB league, LT should go for 50-55%.

My league is 2 QB's and LT will go for 45%. The top RB over the past 5 years has not exceeded this amount.
