What will the Week 17 Sunday Night game be (1 Viewer)

It's already been announced that the KC @ NYJ game originally slated for Sunday night in Week 17 has been moved to the afternoon.

What do you think the new game will be? The NFL doesn't have to announce it until Monday. I'm betting Steelers at Baltimore. If the Browns beat Cincy this week and the Titans beat the Jets, then the Steelers could have a huge game next Sunday -- win and they're the AFC North champ, lose and they're out of the playoffs.

Here are the other "candidates" for week 17 (no games are protected by FOX or CBS):

IMPOSSIBLE

DAL @ WAS - Dallas already has reached their max amount of prime time games.

KC @ NYJ - Original Sunday night game. Already moved out of primetime.

UNLIKELY

CIN @ MIA - Meaningless

BUF @ PHI - Meaningless

NO @ CHI - Probably meaningless, depending on this week

STL @ ARI - Meaningless

JAX @ HOU - Meaningless game. Jax clinches with a win this week (vs OAK).

POSSIBLE

DET @ GB - Packers could be playing for home field advantage, unless Dallas wins earlier in the day, making this game entirely meaningless.

SEA @ ATL - Seattle is playing for #3 seed, but that's it.

CAR @ TB - See Seattle

SD @ OAK - Playing for seeding

TEN @ IND - Titans might be eliminated by kickoff, and who wants a Sorgi-fest on prime time?

SF @ CLE - Pretty meaningless if Browns win to clinch a spot this weekend.

BEST CANDIDATES

PIT @ BAL - Already discussed.

MIN @ DEN - This is the other one I could see, as it will likely set up as a game the Vikings need to win to clinch a playoff spot. But the Vikings are on this Sunday Night, and the Broncos have had 4 home national games already.

Bottom line, Pitt-Balt is a great rivalry, the Steelers bring huge national audiences, and this is likely to be the game with the most playoff ramifications.

Is that true? If the Steelers lose next week, and the both the Titans and Browns win out, wouldn't that put Pittsburgh in a tie with the Titans? If so, I think the Steelers would have the tie-breaker over the Titans.

You could also make a case for Cleveland needing a win to make the playoffs, particularly if they happen to stumble against Cincy this week.

Not sure this matters, but I think we already saw a Pit/Bal prime time game this year. I remember a big first half for Roethlisberger in the pouring rain.

What's this business of a limit on prime time games? Dallas @ Washington would be sweet if Washington wins on Sunday.

It's designed to keep certain teams (not the Skins, but you know who I'm talking about *nudge* *nudge* *wink* *wink*) from being a regular feature on primetime.

Well, I hate *wink* *wink* certain teams too, but this is definitely one example of where the rule needs to be dropped, or an exception made at least.

Obviously the Titans (if they win out) must have the tiebreaker over the Steelers otherwise the Steelers would have clinched the playoffs after last night's win.......

Actually, the reason that the Steelers didn't "clinch" the playoffs is more complicated that that. If Pitt loses next week AND the Titans win their last two games, they will be tied for the 6th spot with 10-6 records. For the Wild Card, here are the tie-breakers:1) Head-to-Head. Pitt and Tenn didn't play this year.

2) Win % in Conference games. If this tie happens, they will have identical 7-5 AFC records.

3) Win % in common games. They will both have 2-3 records in common games.

4) Strength of Victory. Combined win % of all teams you have beaten.

As of right now, Pitt's strength of victory is .415 (61-86), with 12 games that have not been decided. (For this scenario to play out, Cleveland MUST win their last games or Pitt would win AFC North. Cincy would have to lose their next game, and Balt would have to win their last game).

As of right now, Tenn's strengthof victory is .444 (63-79), with 18 games that have not been decided. (For this scenario to play out, you would have to give a loss in week 16 to the Colts, and in week 17 to the Jets, for Tenn to go 10-6).

As you can see, Pitt doesn't clinch unless Tenn loses or ties one of their final two games. Even if they do end up tied, it is entirely possible that Pitt could win the tie-breaker, but they would need Tenn's strength of victory to drop, and for theirs (Pitts) to improve.

Now, all that being said, if the Pitt/Bal game were to be moved to 8pm next week, the game could be meaningless anyway. Cleveland and Tennessee will both have already played. It's entirely possible that the Steelers will have already clinced a playoff spot or the division. It would also be Pitt's 6th prime-time game this season, and Baltimore's 5th. What is the maximum?

If Dallas loses this week to Carolina (which I don't think should happen), then I think it's a lock that week 17's SNF will be GB/Det. That game could be for the #1 seed in the NFC (If GB beats Chi in week 16).

Gotcha.....thanks for the clarification.

Detroit @ Green Bay

It's the annual Bret Favre retirement hype game. If they have a shot at homefield, then the game itself is huge. If not, they can sideline interview the crap out of Favre and his teammates. Don't forget who calls the game either. Favre's not-so-secret admirer, John Madden.

That's my take.

I just think it's pretty likely that Dallas will have wrapped up the #1 seed before GB ever takes the field next Sunday night, which means the Sunday Night game will be totally meaningless and feature only a half of Favre (at most) in a game with nothing on the line.

Too bad Dallas has already met its quota, since Dallas-Washington is a great rivalry and could be a huge game -- Dallas trying to clinch #1, the Redskins trying to make the playoffs.
