What WW defense are you targeting? (1 Viewer)

I know lots of people prefer to work the wire week to week and pick whatever D is playing crap offenses so this year Miami and Cleveland seem to be worst offenses. Not a fan of this strategy as I've been burned by too many bad Ds.

I much prefer finding that under the radar D early in the season and just riding their season long stats.

So who are the popular choices? I really like the Bucs and will be going for them. Don't know how much of their performance was a bad Carolina OL but they looked pretty legit to me. Anyone else watch games and can elaborate on a D that they think will perform well?

Carolina's O-Line is unchanged from last year, and was a top 3 unit. Granted, they played poorly yesterday, but a lot of that had to do with the Bucs. The Bucs looked legit.I had planned on going for the Bengals, but I don't think I'll be doing that after their performance tonight. I'm probably looking at the Raiders (vs. the Dolphins), Cowboys (vs. the Seahawks), or Redskins (vs. the Rams) off of my wire...in that order.

Yeah, sorry. I meant more I am picking up Oakland for the matchup. Just a 1 week thing.

So people don't have limited free agent moves in their league? In my league, we have a limit of 25 so obviously, I can't change defenses every week...

The thing about going with matchups is that you still want to select a team that has a competent enough offense to keep their defense off the field. Not sure Oakland fits the bill. I'm going with Dallas.

Yeah but next week against Miami, I'm looking at some Pick 6's vs. a rookie QB.

Again I'm not looking for a week 2 WW defense. I'm trying to get discussion going on defenses that look like they could finish top 5. Everyone can look at their wire every week and see who is playing Arizona Miami or Cleveland.

I drafted the Bills hoping to get them as a sneaky Top 5. They were horrendous this week. Oakland's D has actually been solid, they've held SD to 4 FG and 1 TD, shutting them down and holding them to a bunch of FG.

Cleveland looked good against the Eagles, but no way they repeat that with any sort of consistency.

I'm not sure that it's worth trying to grab a team for the rest of the year. Unless you have the 49ers, Steelers, Ravens, etc. it's best to play it week to week and stick with a team if they happen to hit for you. I managed to get San Fran last year by playing the matchups early in the year, but it certainly wasn't the original intention.

Lol you just proved my point for me, picking up the #1 D on the wire. Similar to you I picked up Houston early and they were great for me. While you say you merely Gumped your way into SF playing week to week match ups, I'm sure there were many others like myself who thought Sf looked good and targeted them. The Browns someone threw out. Thought they looked good. Interestingly hey earned an fbg downgrade I assume due to Haden suspension?

If you can still grab the Cardinals...they play NE and Philly the next 2 weeks but after that its...

Wk 4 MIAMI...Tannehill

Wk5 @St L...Bradford

Wk6 BUFF...FintPatrick

Wk7 @MN...Ponder

Should be a lot of turnovers and sacks. Good 2nd defense in leagues where you have the luxury to maintain 2 on your roster.

Denver, and I'm talking season, not next week. With Peyton they will be very solid. I say this cause I'm pretty, sure my league doesn't look here....

Cincys got a great schedule coming up and they were a top 10 defense last year. Yes they got abused by BAL but Im not too concerned about that.

Good call, I'm going to look at them for those few weeks after I use Oakland, thanks.

Patriots. Going to dump Seattle for these guys and ride them for awhile. Maybe the season. They can cause teams to give up sacks/picks while trying to play catch up or if Ridley is for real they can grind out the clock a bit more and limit the other team's offense. Next three opponents are Arizona, Baltimore, Buffalo. Ravens should be a great test but the other two offer a lot of opportunities for sacks and interceptions.

That's my point though. By churning through defenses (in another league), I outscored Houston with my team's performances. To each their own though. What do you do when your team plays the Patriots or Packers? Do you devote another roster spot to another defense, or do you just roll them out, knowing that you're probably taking a hit?

This is my first year of rolling a new D every week (unless I find a gem), so I'm going to see how it works. I drafted the Bills late hoping to get a sneaky Top 5 DST, but they were horrendous this week. I'm not dropping them, but I'm certainly not starting them every week until they can show me they deserve to start. Going to roll a few different ones over the next few weeks and see how it goes.

Rule number one of rolling defenses...get rid of them when they suck. It's not worth hanging on to a team that allows 40+ points to the Jets.

i cant decide between redskins and broncos

being a redskins homer stl has always been a problem for the skins

Agreed, I'm surprised more have not said NE. Maybe that means they are not available in most leagues.I play WW all year. Cut Chicago against GB for NE against Arizona. Too many defenses available in redraft to worry about keeping them on my roster while rostering another, or letting them play against a good O just because I don't want to cut them. Week to week is the way to go and seems to work best.

That's basically my top Def/ST in most leagues. I agree with everything you are saying here, the fact the offense is so good means the defense can take a boatload of chances. I'm not saying they are the #1 defense in FF, but they make a solid choice week in and week out.

Before last night, i was all-in on the Bengals against the Browns this week, and they have a weak schedule the following 5-6 weeks, but i can't get past how bad their secondary looked.

Now, i am leaning towards the Broncos or Redskins.

Greg Little <> Smith, Boldin, Pitta

I'm dropping the Bills and picking up either the Patriots or Broncos. Sad, usually FBG is spot on about sleeper defenses at the beginning of the year (GB, Lions in past years).

I'm a pats homer and agree. I drafts them in a 14 teamed where most teams roster 2 DS which makes wire thin. Actually think I might target them in trade. I think they'll have a ton of sacks and turnovers and will perform similar to 2007.

As a fellow Bills DST owner I'm in the same boat. However, I don't have the luxury of having Pats or Broncos on the WW. I have to settle with Oakland, Cleveland, Atlanta, San Diego, St. Louis, etc, etc..Weekly rotation is the only way that group of scrubs is going to get me through the season. It's also why I'm not going to drop the Bills yet to grab a new DEF. The sleeper could still be there, but a bad week vs. the Jets offense is not promising. I'll wait on them for a a couple more weeks before cutting them loose.

The Pats always seem to put up solid defense points, even though they tend to be in high scoring games. Personally, I was going to drop Russell Wilson, so I offered him up to a QB needy team for the Pats defense (he was doing DST by committee with Houston). It seems like an easy accept for him.

That's impressive matchup skills if you produced as many points as Houston last year as they were 15-20 a week for me. To answer your question, vs. a top D depending on scoring system I just keep the good D in there.

You'd be surprised. I rarely picked the best option off of the wire, and more often than not, I just grabbed one that Bloom recommended in his "Rent-a-Defense" column each week. It was really little or no work, and I've managed to have success doing that for three straight years...so I think it has more to do with the system than getting lucky with the picks.

I drafted them with this next stretch in mind. Week 2: CLEWeek 3: @ WAS (not as tasty as before, but wait for it...)Week 4: @ JAXWeek 5: MIAWeek 6: @ CLE Week 7: PIT (might get dropped before here, but I'm not scared of PIT offense right now)Week 8: bye Will stream before week 7 or 8.

Ok, you guys talked me into taking the Bengals. I dropped the Bills for one of the few teams in the NFL who scores LESS than than the Bills (in my league, the Bills scored -1, while the Bengals scored -3)...but against Cleveland, I can't imagine them not putting up decent points.

I was thinking Denver for the long haul but their schedule looks....ugh. I drafted 49ers, but am thinking of Cincy as well

Fellow Bills owner. Despite their showing against the Jets, I am rolling with them this week and next. If they turn in a clunker against both KC and Cleveland, then adios.

I'm holding onto the Bills for that Cleveland matchup, but I'm going to grab the Redskins this week and play them.

With the injuries to Wells & Saffold, that already questionable O-Line is going to be downright horrible. I see some sacks and plenty of pressures against Bradford, which will limit the Rams scoring potential.

Actually, just check my WW and KC are also there.

Do people like KC against FINTpatrick or WAS against the Ramsbetter this week?
