Whatcha readin now? (book, books, reading, read) (2 Viewers)

Looking for some heavy non-fiction for my Dad. No autobiographies. Prefers the sciences or sciences related for the most part. Reads textbooks for fun so the heavier the better.
I was going to recommend The Ants by E.O. Wilson, but I just looked it up on Amazon and it's $130 now.

He's probably already read Gödel, Escher, Bach.

How the Mind Works by Steven Pinker would be a good choice. (I liked Consciousness Explained by Dan Dennett better, but How the Mind Works seems more Christmas gifty because it's thicker.)

Not sure if it is heavy enough but though that The Code Book: The Science of Cryptography by Simon Singh was pretty good.

Reading Ishmael for the first time.

It can be pedantic, heavy-handed, silly and overbearing, but it the most thought-provoking thing I've ever read.

Looking for Sociology, Anthropology, or Psychology related book recommendations. TIA.

For reference, I've read: In Search of Respect: Selling Crack in El Barrio and also Malcolm Gladwell’s book The Tipping Point.

Anyone read Revival by S King yet ?
Yes its maybe a 5 on a scale of 1 to 10. Less if you compare it to the Dark Tower series or The Stand.
Yikes. I may move that down my "to read" list. Thanks. Thought his last book (Mr Mercedes) was pretty darn good.Would never compare anything new to DT or The Stand.
It's better, but different. Keep in mind, though, that I read it in Mexico on a post-breakup bender.

Definitely worth reading imo. I enjoyed it much more than a lot of stuff I've read this year.

I'm looking for books in the genre of Steinbeck's Tortilla Flats and Cannery Row - any recs?
Those are a great couple of books and I really cannot think of others that hold a light. I guess maybe a bit similar in some obtuse vein, Sometime's a Great Notion by Kesey for capturing the essence of a west coast microcosm of interesting and compelling characters. Its a great book, but the comparison the those Steinbeck novels is a stretch, even for me.

Anyone else been reading Slow Burn the zombie book set in Austin. I've enjoyed it very much (albeit guiltily).
Yeah, I've been reading those. Definitely a guilty pleasure. I think I'm on the latest one. Some good, relatively mindless fun.

Marvel Unlimited. So many comics so little time. Just finished the Civil War series which covered about 100 issues. Superior Spiderman was a cool run. Thanos Rising was great. Trying to pick starting points is tough with so many possibilities!

Finished

East of Eden by Steinbeck

I started it months ago but stopped about 200 pages in. A few weeks ago I picked it up where I left off. It's a long book but reads pretty easy. The Biblical references that weren't explicitly stated went over my head but the story itself is still great. I plan on revisiting it sometime in the future.

Reading

The Road by Cormac McCarthy

I've read about 2/3 of it. It's good but I don't love it. I don't like the lack of apostrophes and quotation marks. What is the reason for this? Very quick read though. I plan on finishing it in the next few days.

To Read

I, Claudius by Graves or One Summer: 1927 America by Bryson. I'm not sure which one I'll go with next. I've read Bryson's A Short History of Nearly Everything and enjoyed it. Claudius appears to be dense and looks like it could be difficult to get into. I also have Claudius The God on my shelf.

Anyone read Revival by S King yet ?
I am reading it now. Not one of his best but I am enjoying it. I consider myself fairly religious and he comes right out with all the questions that we often have regarding God. Not even really questions but statements- There is no God because..............

I dont want to spoil anything but I will say it made me uncomfortable. They are the sort of things that have had me ask why in the past. I am hoping this takes a turn towards my beliefs in the end but I kind of doubt it. If I had to describe this book with out spoilers I would say it is a Mitch Albom book gone bad.

This won't be useful to anyone, since these are both heavily reviewed in here, but I decided I had to finish two books everyone loved and I couldn't get through: Unbroken, and The Goldfinch. First up, another try at Unbroken. Once I skimmed through the first 80 pages or so, I found myself able to get into it a lot more. I find myself (about 300 pages in) dying to find out what happens, even though I know the ending.

That's it.

Finished the Martian recently. Really enjoyed it although the ending seemed a little rushed. I love sci-fi in movies but don't really read much of it, this was a nice change of pace for me and the book was very enjoyable. The movie will be interesting, it will be a very 'Castaway' on Mars kind of movie. Should be a big role for Matt Damon.

Starting the Alchemist next then Kite Runner. Looking forward to both.

I'm now starting "Unbroken" by Laura Hillenbrand. "Seabiscuit" was my favorite all time book, so I have high hopes for this one.
My mom read this & loved it. She said it's unbelievable the stuff that guy went through. It's in my queue, as I really liked "Seabicuit" too.
Phenominal story  Started lsitening to it on CD on my commute and was so hooked I had to buy the story and read it on the CINC's Nook after I got out of the car. This story is begging to be made into a movie. Can't recomend it enough.
Just finished Unbroken today. It was a great story, and definitely should be made into a movie considering the schlock Hollywood has been putting out. That said, the ending was a little disappointing. I honestly thought I had almost 100 pages left, but then realized they were all just footnotes, etc. I was left with a "that was it?" feeling at the end.
Couldn't agree more with this last part. I just finished it and had exactly the same reaction to the end. Thought it was going to show Louie evolving, but instead it was just "he was in a death spiral, then he met Billy Graham, The End." Other than that, great story and the book was well done.

Fun (only to me) fact: I read the acknowledgements as I was curious as to how much work it had been to put the story together, and one of the "several people to whom I owe special thanks" was a friend of mine. I knew he and the author were long-time friends, but he had never mentioned to me that he helped with this book.

Might not be quite what you have in mind but War Dogs by Rebecca Frankel seems good so far, just started.

Just finished bad luck and trouble (Jack Reacher), decent enough. Easy read, Lee child is a good author.

Reading A Brief HIstory of Seven Killings by Marlon James. It uses the assassination attempt on Bob Marley in 1976 as a backdrop for it's fiction. Narrative is told through several characters with differing POV and details the corruption and criminal element that exists throughout Jamaica. I am still in the early stages but it seems like it's going to be a good one and it is getting rave reviews.

I'm making my way through The Goldfinch in my quest to finish books I started long ago (in this case, about a year) and never finished. I'm enjoying it a lot more this time.

Just finished MockingJay and took the boys to see it on the same day. Enjoyed the series for what it was - Movie was spot on.

Pick my next book -

Revival - Stephen King

The Escape - David Baldacci

Hope to Die - James Patterson

Unbroken - Hillenbrand

Gray Mountain - John Grisham

I know - all hacks

Looking start a new book on Monday - pick one
Unbroken

Read White Fire by Preston and Child recently. Better than the few preceding Pendergast novels in my opinion. I'd say 3 out of 5.

Right now reading A Sudden Light by Garth Stein. Spooky and sentimental ghost story told from a teenager's perspective. Thoroughly enjoying this one so far.

Yep, though I really liked Revival too.

Anyone read these and if so thoughts?:

THE BALLAD OF A SMALL PLAYER By Lawrence Osborne

THE LAUGHING MONSTERS By Denis Johnson

FOURTH OF JULY CREEK by Smith Henderson

Started this last night. It's really good so far, but I'm unsure I'll be able to read 600 pages of it. It's like the Canterbury tales, where you have to interpret about half the sentences in your brain before proceeding to the next sentence. That's usually okay for me in dialogue, but when the entire first person narrative uses it, it becomes tedious.

I ended up hating this book. Like, hating it to the point where the whole thing made me angry.

Enjoy!

You know it depends upon how much Diet Rite you mix with it.

That would be gauche and a waste of fine whiskey. Mexican coke is the only acceptable mixer.

You guys are talking about Seven Killings right? Because I wanna know which book I'm avoiding like the plague, Goldfinch or Seven Killings.

I think they are talking about different books.

Cos's description leads me to believe he is talking about Seven Killings. The narrative changes each chapter depending on POV of character. It's interesting but it's made it a little slow going at first. It is a little harder to read that way.

The book is interesting enough where Im going to keep going though.

Sounds like Krista is talking about Goldfinch?

 You might be right. I was talking about The Goldfinch.

cos, I don't owe you a neck drink after all. :pickle:
whoa I just started this. it's very early, the event just happened but I'm liking it. I have no idea where the story is going.
Please post your thoughts when you've read more of it, or all of it. I think someone whose opinion I respect in here--haven't gone back to see who it was--really liked the book, and it also was on a bunch of year-end top-ten lists, including the NY Times. I'm curious as to other opinions since I might be an outlier on it.

I did go through stages--loved, hated, loved, and then hated.

What If? by Randall Munroe (of the xkcd comic). got it as a christmas gift.

Takes reader submissions of absurd questions and provides a scientific answer to each. Very entertaining read. Similar to reading The Straight Dope, but with crazier questions.

I just finished The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt by Edmund Morris. Went from there straight into Theodore Rex, the second biography of the series.
