Reading Steven Pinker's "The Better Angels of Our Nature"...I've read and enjoyed just about everything else he's written... no idea why I put this off for so long. I think it's just that I'd heard a summary of the argument so many times (and accepted its validity) that the need to read this thick tome didn't seem to be very pressing. What a mistake! There are gems on every page. For a taste, the next time you're in a book store, just read the summary of the Old Testament that begins at the top of page 6 and concludes at the top of page 12. Pinker is as nasty, brutish and short (and hilarious) as the OT is nasty, brutish and long.
