I work in group disability. The definition of disability for ssdi is a lot more restrictive than private disability insurance.
You have to show that you are not going to able to do anything (even push a mop) for at least a year. And believe me, they find some odd ball occupation to say oh but you could do this like the counting eggs one. Well ok so move out of your home in CA across the states to a farm. They don't care what it is or what the pay is. They have a list of occupations that seriously make you laugh and wonder if it's for real. They aren't working for you but against you because they don't want to pay----
even though you have paid into the system via your fica taxes.
You are still entitled to get social security when you are old enough so I dont really think this is relevant, unless you think you should just be able to get back what you put in. I would absolutely support that.
I also don't really see the issue of wanting people to get jobs. If you can get a job that pays 10 bucks an hour, I dont think you should really have the luxury of saying "I dont want that job" or "I dont want to move to get that job".
If you cant find a job that doesnt cause pain or you simply arent physically/mentally able to perform any job then you should get SS disability. If that doesn't apply to you, I think you should be required to work.
