Whatever happened to the Neck Roll? (1 Viewer)

oh man, the neck roll - I played for a tiny little high school and we only had the white foam kind like this: big foam rubber crap Nobody except linemen wanted to wear those.

however, the district champs that year had a LB who not only was rocking a giant black cowboy collar that stood up a foot over his shoulder pads, but also a tinted visor on his facemask - the kid was about 6'4 and looked like Darth Vader. This was about 95-96, and it really impressed the hell out of our team and made us feel way inferior in the neck roll arms race.

I'm younger, and I had mentioned this and also the big face mask with the line down the middle (linemen usually wore them) to my father one time. He laughed and said he wore the big facemask, said it was cool. When I asked him what position he played, he said...safety. That made me laugh. Imagine seeing a safety wearing a big defensive lineman face mask...hilarious

I suppose it was so long ago, that is all they had...big ### face masks...

Mark Kelso set the pace for goofy looking helmets worn by a safety.
He sure did look goofy in the pro cap, but I do remember him being fearless in launching himself head-first and full speed to make tackles and force fumbles. Gave him some extra courage being a headhunter, I guess.Best player to ever rock the roll is also my favorite player -- and Raider -- of all time.

Howie Long.

I still see plenty of fatties on the line with tremendous neck rolls as well as back rolls, stomach rolls, etc.

Single face bar has to be a kicker or punter....maybe a Reggie Roby?

Could these decrease concussions? The ones where your heads bangs on the ground. I see "memory" foam sponsorships in the future.

I thought they were support to protect your neck when you smash your helmet into another player. If that's the case, no place in today's NFL :lmao:

The ONLY single-bar mask as far as I'm concerned is the stylings of Gary Player's Super Cool jacked-down lowrider.
The only thing that gets more :moneybag:s than his helmet, is his mustache. :moneybag: ^ n
His stache had so much presence, you could technically call it a bar of its own.
I don't think Gary Player was ever an NFL kicker. ;)

Will go with Otto Graham as the first, and I think the Reggie Roby post is correct for the last.

Jim 0 t t 0

neckroll: check

QB facemask while playing Center: check

Number matches 1st and last letters in name on back of jersey: check
