What's normal - nail clipping (A Tribute to Keerock) (1 Viewer)

Do you clip your fingernails, file them or both?

RIP Keerock polls

father-in-law was a file only guy. to that point i'd been a clip only guy. now i'm 50/50 but leaning towards going 100% file only. less mess, less fuss, better overall experience.

Clip and file. If I don't file the toenails, then one of the nails will inevitably catch a snag in my socks the next day.

I can't stand the feeling of filing.

Done carefully clipping is all you need - filing is for inexact clippers.  And, as a bonus, clippers can claim to still be male.

Mixture of chew and file. Can probably count the times that I have used clippers on my fingernails.

I have also been a paid hand model (no schitck!) so you are dealing with a professional here.

The less-manly question is whether you push back the cuticles so the edge doesn't stretch and create a problem.

Quick funny story about my racist dad.

40 years ago in Detroit, my sister was 12 years old and sitting on the front porch. She was trying to see if she could bite her toenails like she did her finger nails. As she put her foot in her mouth and started nibbling, my dad walked up the walkway and said, “Karen, don’t do that. That’s what the n*****rs do.”

We still use that line when the mood is right and company wouldn’t be too offended.

All you guys lose your teeth or something?
Worked for me for a long time (never a nervous biter - purely functional) until I chipped a little off my tooth right at the biting spot. That was a sad day.

Fortunately, somehow I figured out the rocket science that's apparently involved in getting a clean cut from some clippers.

I know it's not hygienic but I bite mine.  In my defense, I never bite them in public.  It's not a nervous habit or anything, I only do it when they need to be clipped but I hate clipping them.

I do it out of respect for my wife’s vajoober.
Is it hard to clip your nails without leaving jagged edges? Not even breaking balls here, seems to be the case for a lot of people here. I can honestly say I've never found it more difficult than tying my shoes. Never had the need to grab one of my grandmother's emery boards and start whacking away.

   I'm going to randomly throw that line out at a family gathering and see the reaction that I get.

Really?? Dudes file their nails?? I’ve never even considered this.
it means not having to cut them

i've known enough animals that clip their nails and let them fly wherever around the room. or clip them at work. or in meetings

filing shortstops all that and keeps them looking neat and clean every day.

This is me. I don't give a #### if they're perfectly smooth for aesthetic purproses... but getting hung on socks or sheets drives me nuts.

How awful do you have to be at clipping to leave jagged edges? Pro-tip -- you need to do more than 3 clips per nail. Are you guys also not able to cut out a circle with scissors?

I can't even picture some of you grown men filing away with an Emery board.

Yet another thread that helps funnel FBGs into various categories.

my lab always tries to eat the clippings - is this normal?

eta - toenail clippings

I file mine with a leatherman multi-tool; I like my nails to feel smooth.
You may also be shocked to learn some men also regularly get manicures. Excuse us while we get off your lawn.

It’s not so much about “jagged edges” or the nails being uneven.

Filing them down makes the nails a lot less sharp...sharper..sharperer.

What’s funny is that I never thought of filing my nails after cutting until I was about 18.

I had a friend that was 23-24.  We were hanging out at his apartment and he clipped his nails.  Then he grabbed one of his wife’s Emory boards and went to town.  I looked at him funny.  He said “you don’t file your nails after you cut them?  You should.”

His wife, who was a total POA, nodded vigorously.  I’ve done it ever since.

Oh, and abovementioned guy was a Teamster. Not kidding.  Dude drove a booze truck all over Central CA.  Looked like a white Cheech Marin.

I guess my nails just aren't naturally sharp. I've fingerblasted plenty of chicks in the woods behind the pharmacy and none of them ever complained.

I've got large fingers and two clips with the nail clippers leaves a jagged edge and sharp corners, I don't use an emery board though, I just use that little metal file thingy that's attached to the clippers, one or two swipes and I'm all good.  The problem is that the hard corners dig into my skin, I'm like really old or something so my nails have gotten harder as I've gotten older, in my youth I'd just bite the edges off, I think if I tried that now I'd chip a tooth on these damn talons! ;)

On my toes, I've been doing this thing for over 30 years now, I cut them straight across with a pair of little grooming scissors.  Twice, in college, I got ingrown toe nails from ripping the nails off and I had to go to a med check to get the infection taken care of, this happened like a year apart.  Fortunately or unfortunately (however you look at it) I got the same Indian doctor both times.  The 2nd time was pretty funny, the doctor sees me, his eyes grow huge and he says "You again?  What is your problem man?  I TOLD you the last time to cut them straight across, clearly you have NOT done what I told you to do, stop wasting my time, I will fix it this time but you do not need to be here, you need to listen to me and cut the nails properly as I have told you."

The ingrown toe nail thing sucks because I had to get the toe numb with two shots, this was the big toe (both times) they cut the nail down to almost nothing and when the numbing wears off it is pure pain for several weeks, anything that touches that toe it's pure torture, needless to say, I learned my lesson that 2nd time and I haven't had an ingrown toenail since, wearing the correct shoe size helps too, I was wearing a half size too small I think at the time.

So anybody looking for silver linings with Covid - this is one.  After almost 46 years of being a nail biter (yes, gross although in my defense I only bit them at home) I stopped biting them and have used clippers for over a year now.

Tanner's wife's vajoober awaits me.
