Wheelhouse - Interesting Stats, Info and Tidbits

Thru Week 6

My apoloigies for the shorter column this week. I may add some more later if I have time.

1. In case you were wondering - Every single WR with at least a 60.0 yards per game average has scored at least 1 TD.

Yards per game leaders

Going further with WR's...

* If you were to take away Greg Jenning's 1st game where he wasn't too involved, his yards per game would be 89.8

* If Steve Smith played in the first two games of the season, at his current rate of 112.5 yards per game, he would have 123 more yards than the next closest WR.

* Bernard Berrian still leads the NFL with 5 gains of 40 yards or more for WR's. He is the only Bears WR with any gains of 40 yards or more.

* KC, SD, TN and NE do not have any WR's with a 40-yard gain yet this season.

* Before Sunday's game against Carolina, Baltimore did not have any WR's with a gain of 40 yards or more. Mark Clayton is now the only one with his 62 yard TD rec that wasn't even intended for him.

* Other teams with only one WR with a 40 yard gain or more is DET, IND, MIA, MIN, OAK (Roy Williams, Reggie Wayne, Marty Booker, Troy Williamson, Randy Moss).

2. I wonder if this has ever happened before? - Tiki Barber is the NFL's leading rusher with 533 yards (5 games no less) and he has not even scored a rushing TD. :o You'd have to go to #34 on the rushing yards leader board to find the next RB without a rushing TD (Leon Washington).

3. Talk me off the Edge - Edgerrin James is averaging 2.7 yards per carry, which is the fewest average per carry of the top 57 RB's in rushing yards. #58 Running Back Michael Robinson shares the same average of 2.7 ypc. James' longest run this season is STILL only 14 yards, which he managed to do week 1.

4. Houston, we have a problem - Ron Dayne is Houston's leading rusher with 167 yards or 41.8 yards per game. :yucky:

5. I didn't think this would happen, but I bet you did ;) Who knew that after week 6 Travis Henry would have 196 more rushing yards and more rushing TD's than Shaun Alexander?

6. And down to earth comes Rex - Rex Grossman, after his Monday Night debacle, now has an 82.0 QB rating on the year, just in case you wondered.

7. Could this be why the Patriots wanted to pursue Randy Moss? - Tom Brady's longest pass on the year is 35 yards. You'd have to go to the 35th ranked QB in yards passing (Vince Young) before you found someone with a shorter longest pass.

8. Hines Ward is tied with Ladell betts in receptions - Notable examples of players with more receptions than Hines Ward's 18 - The number below in parenthesis is how many more than Hines Ward.

40 (22) Anquan Boldin

38 (20) Reggie Bush

33 (15) Wes Welker

28 (10) Mike Furrey

23 (5) TJ Houshmandzadeh (in only 3 games)

20 (2) Desmond Clark

18 (0) Ladell Betts

Write-in stats from fellow Footballguys

From Pizzatyme -

The Colts, who play host to the Washington Redskins (2-4) on Sunday, have won 26 consecutive regular-season games in which they had not yet secured their playoff seeding for that season. They won eight consecutive games at the end of the 2004 season before losing in Denver, then they won their first 13 games last season to secure home-field advantage throughout the

playoffs.

From Maurile Tremblay -

The Chargers now have seven passing touchdowns on the season. The shortest recipient of any of those TD's is 6'4".

9. What do Atlanta, Miami and Denver have in common with Oakland? - Each team has only had 3 passing TD's on the year. :bag:

10. Martz-Ball continues - The Lions are the only team in the NFL with less than 22.0 carries per game. The crazy fact is they average 18.8 carries per game. Compare that with the Chargers who average 37.2 carries per game.

11. The Chargers run game is good and all, but - They are 74 yards per game behind the league leading Falcons who are averaging 252 rushing yards per game. The Chargers still rank #2 in team rushing yardage.

ATL 1160 rushing yeards

SD 791 rushing yards

That's quite the difference between #1 and #2. FWIW, the Texans have 338 rushing yards as a team. That's slightly more than Lawrence Maroney and slightly less than Jamal Lewis. I'll let you know when Atlanta has 1000 yards more rushing than Houston. :D If the trend coninues, they could have 2000 more yards than Houston by the end of the season.

12. How can this be true - we're talking about Larry Johnson here?!? The Chiefs have only 20 rushing first downs on the season. Tied with Houston and Minnesota for the fewest in the NFL. Even the pass-happy Lions have at least 21 rushing first downs. :D

13. What do the Colts, Jets, Packers and Cardinals have in common with their running game? Neither team has had a RB with a 20+ yard gain.

14. It's a good thing Denver has a defense - Denver is tied with Oakland :bag: with only 5 offensive TD's this year. Compare that with Philadelphia's league leading 23 offensive TD's.

15. Steelers fans, did you know? - Your team is only averaging 3 penalties per game. Fewest of any other team.

16. What do these 11 teams have in common? DET, MIA, JAC, NE, PIT, SEA, CHI, MIN, SD, BAL, DAL

They all have a defense that is allowing less than 100 yards rushing per game. The teams in bold have only allowed 1 rushing TD.

17. The following teams are averaging 250 yards passing or more ALLOWED per game - SF, DET, PHI, SEA, HOU, GB. To me, it's interesting that SEA and PHI are in this list.

18. Week 6 Target leaders - The following players had 10+ targets in week 6 (consecutive weeks with 10+ targets in parenthesis)

18 Boldin

17 Roy Williams

16 A. Johnson (3)

15 Galloway

15 S. Moss

Say what you will, but Joey Galloway keeps getting targets thrown his way in bunches.

Great stuff as always.

One small correction to make.

7. Could this be why the Patriots wanted to pursue Randy Moss? - Tom Brady's longest pass on the year is 35 yards. You'd have to go to the 35th ranked QB in yards passing (Vince Young) before you found someone with a longer shorter longest pass.

Thanks for making me feel bad...this is why my team is 1-5 !!!QB - Carr, David HOU <--- From waivers

RB - Johnson, Larry KCC <--- 2005 Keeper #1

WR - Ward, Hines PIT <--- 2006 1st Draft Pick

TE - Shockey, Jeremy NYG <--- 2006 Draft Pick

OFF - Barber, Tiki NYG <--- 2005 Keeper #2

OFF - James, Edgerrin ARI <--- 2005 Keeper #3

OFF - Cotchery, Jerricho NYJ <--- From waivers

PK - Carney, John NOS <--- From waivers

DEF - Saints, New Orleans NOS <--- From waivers

If you take away Roy Williams' game, where he was injured on his first catch for 7 yards, he'd be averaging 110 yards/game. Just 2 YPG behind Steve Smith

Wow, is this right? I saw the replay of the short TD catch that he had which was clearly intended for Mason. Was his long TD catch also intended for someone else?If so, that means he had two TD's and neither of them were thrown to him? Talk about a guy wanting the ball!

When a WR has a lot of targets and little to show for it, I feel the QB must have been brutal.Case in Point:

S. Moss had 15 targets and managed to catch only 5 balls for 50 yards. gross! Brunell must have been really bad. I mean they were playing the Titans.

Had to look it up (thanks to pro-football-reference).In 1978 Joe Washington had 956 rushing yds and did not score a rushing TD. That is the most rushing yds in a season without a rushing TD.

Edit to add: He was #14 on the rushing leader list that year.

Great stuff as usual. I do have one stat of intrest that I had no idea (And never would've guessed) had I not read it the other day in a column.

The Oakland Raiders have the top ranked Pass Defense in the league. That's right, the worst team in the league has a better ranked pass D than Denver, Cincy and Da Bears. They're allowed less than 400 yards in 5 games ( ) and opposing WR corps have only averaged 11.6 FF points per game against them thus far.

It's really not unusual for the worst teams to be among the league leaders in Pass Defense. Usually the other team is so far ahead they have no reason to throw the ball.

I understand that, but out of the best 12 pass D's (FF pt wise) in the league, only 3 are from legitmately terrible teams this year. Right behind the Raiders in FF points averaged via WR is Denver, SD, Cincy, Indy and Atlanta. That's why I was so suprised, typically a bad team doesn't just own the top slot with almost no other bad teams around it.

In this case, the situation is exacerbated by the fact that they are so easy to run against. Why pass if you don't have to and you can run at will?

Don't get greedy gents. We should try to make an effort to let Wheelhouse know how much we appreciate this. A lot of time has to go into this and we read it, enjoy it, and then go on our merry little way.

Thanks for this very interesting post that all of us look forward to each week.

Wow! Thanks ICWT10. For those that may be interested - I have been in talks with FBG Podcast extraordinaire Cecil Lammey about having my column included in his weekly podcasts.

I've got some more tidbits...

Hey Joey Galloway fans - Did you know that your boy is the only WR with two games of 15 targets or more? (week 2 vs. ATL and week 6 vs. CIN)

More on Galloway...

Joey Galloway also holds the distinction of being tied with 3 other WR's with 8 targets in a quarter.

Players with games of 15 targets or more (5 of the 7 times occurred in week 6)

18 Boldin - week 6 vs. CHI

17 Roy Williams - week 6 vs. BUF

17 Galloway - week 2 vs. ATL

16 A. Johnson - week 6 vs. DAL

15 M. Harrison - week 1 vs. NYG

15 Galloway - week 6 vs. CIN

15 S. Moss - week 6 vs. TEN

Most targets in a quarter (all occurred in the 2nd or 4th quarter)

8 Fitzgerald - 2nd quarter week 1 vs. SF - team was leading by 7+

8 C. Johnson - 2nd quarter week 6 vs. TB - team was tied 0-0 and leading by 7

8 Galloway - 4th quarter week 2 vs. ATL - team was trailing by 11 pts

8 Harrison - 2nd quarter week 1 vs. NYG - team was leading by 3-6 pts

7 Chambers - 4th quarter week 1 vs. PIT - team was leading by 3 and trailing by 4+

Excellent Wheelhouse, you've been doing a terrific service to all of us for a long time and you surely deserve the recognition...CONGRATS.....
