Wheelhouse - Interesting Stats, Info and Tidbits

Thru Week 13

1. Pass efficient QB's. (Touchdowns - Interceptions) leaders

+14 Palmer

+14 P. Manning

+12 McNabb

+10 Rivers

+10 Brees

+10 D. Huard

+9 Bulger

+8 Brady

+6 Vick

+6 Romo

+4 E. Manning

+4 Delhomme

2. Panthers hoping Eli Manning doesn't trip on a banana peel - Carolina has lost every game against the NFC East this year and have the Giants coming to town this week. In their losses to the Redskins, Cowboys and Eagles, each time they faced QB that wasn't a starter at the beginning of the year. (Jason Campbell, Tony Romo, Jeff Garcia).

FWIW...Carolina embarrassed Eli Manning and the Giants 23-0 at New York in the NFC WildCard game in 2005.

3. Interesting Stat of the Week - Eli Manning tosses a TD every 137.6 yards passing. Fewest yards per TD in the NFL (minimum 2500 yards). Other QB's with at least 2500 yards include...

141.2 C. Palmer

143.4 Brady

147.0 McNabb

150.6 P. Manning

162.5 P. Rivers

173.2 Delhomme

182.2 D. Brees

189.8 Favre

194.7 Roethlisberger

198.2 Bulger

245.3 Kitna

4. On pace for 4000 yards passing. Any QB playing 16 games that averages 250 yards per game will reach 4000 yards passing. Here's your list of QB's on pace to meet that mark.

Yards per game - Pace - Player

304.1, 4865 - Brees

276.2, 4419 - P. Manning

265.8, 4250 - J. Kitna

264.3, 4228 - Bulger

258.5, 4136 - C. Palmer

Drew Brees has an outside shot at breaking Dan Marino's one season record of 5084 yards set back in 1984.

5. Four players on the same team with 1000 yards receiving in the same season? In case you're wondering, can the Saints have 3 WR's with 1000 yards receiving? How about 4 if you count Reggie Bush?

Yards needed to reach 1000 with 4 games left

438 D. Henderson

438 R. Bush

321 Horn

131 Colston

6. Just how bad are the Raiders? :X The Raiders leading rusher (L. Jordan) and receiver (R. Moss) have a combined 959 yards on the year. 8 RB's and 5 WR's have more yards than the Raiders have combined in rushing & receiving.

7. It's either one or the other, but likely not both - The Rams are the only team that have a RB and WR that are both in the top 15 of their respective categories in yardage.

Steven Jackson is ranked 6th in rushing yards (1028 yds) and Torry Holt is ranked 11th in receiving yardage (910 yds). No other tandem on another team is remotely in the top 15 in both, in fact not even the top 20.

Think about it. Who are the top rushers? They are all on teams without a top WR. Tomlinson, Larry Johnson, Frank Gore, Tiki Barber, Chester Taylor... And who are the top WR's? They are all on teams without a top RB. Chad Johnson, Roy Williams, Reggie Wayne, Andre Johnson, Steve Smith, Donald Driver, etc.

8. Some quick stats -

* Marion Barber quietly has 13 touchdowns this year.

* LT has 20 more TD's than Steven Jackson

* Carolina is last in the NFL in kickoff return and punt return average

* Reggie Bush has 19 more receptions than his closest teammate, Marques Colston

* Alge Crumpler leads all TE's with 7 TD's

* The Jaguars, Eagles and Browns are the only teams that have not attempted a 50+ yard FG this year

* The Vikings of all teams lead the NFL in time of possession 32:46 per game

* 85% of the time, San Francisco calls for a fair catch on punts

* 57.7% of the Chargers TD's have come via Tomlinson

* New England is 14 of 17 on 4th down attempts this year. Wow!

* John Kasay has missed only 2 FG's this year. One was at 55 yards and the other was 63 yards

* Steven Jackson has 9, 19 and 35 receptions in the months of Sept, Oct and Nov respectively

* New England has attempted only 3 FG of 40 yards or more this year

9. How do you stop Steven Jackson? Ask Carolina. The Panthers allowed only 57 yards from him. All other teams average 144 total yards allowed to Jackson. The next closest team in terms of yards allowed by Jackson in a game is Seattle with 96.

10. Wr's with the most 20+ yard gains and 40+ yard gains - combined

22 Roy Williams (only three 40+ yd gains)

21 C. Johnson

21 D. Driver

19 S. Smith

18 D. Jackson

18 I. Bruce

17 Galloway

17 Owens

17 Wayne

17 J. Walker

17 A. Johnson

17 A. Bryant

17 Stallworth

17 R. Brown

16 Boldin

16 Colston

16 D. Henderson

15 Berrian

15 Burress

15 M. Harrison

11. I would love to know which team leads the league in roughing the passer penalties. I can you this though. The Bears have 24 1st downs as a result of penalty - most in the NFL (tied with DAL, ARI, NYJ). The Giants have only 10 - fewest in the NFL.

12. Write-in Stat of the Week comes from FBG "Buckna"

*The Associated Press reports the Houston Texans became the first team in 25 years to win a game with negative yards passing. Texans QB David Carr failed to complete a pass in the second half of the Week 13 game and finished 7-of-14 passing for 32 yards. Carr was sacked five times for 37 yards during the game, leaving the Texans with minus-5 yards passing. Elias Sports Bureau reports the Texans were the first team since the Houston Oilers to finish with negative yards passing and win. The Oilers pulled off the feat Oct. 4, 1981, against the Cincinnati Bengals

13. And yet, he still won the game! Rex Grossman had a QB rating of 1.3 last week vs. Minnesota. He was the first QB to have a QB rating of less than 10.0 and still win the game since the Houston Oilers in 1982. I think I remember hearing it was against the Seattle Seahawks. If that's the case, that was the only win for Houston in that strike-shortened year of 9 games.

14. Target Leaders week 13 - Players with 10+ targets (consecutive games of 10+ targets in parenthesis)

15 Chambers

14 Holt (4)

14 R. Caldwell

13 Owens (2)

13 A. Bryant

12 Driver

12 Furrey (2)

11 L. Evans

11 S. Jackson (2) - RB

11 T. Gonzalez -TE

11 M. Robinson (2)

11 Cotchery (2)

11 TJ Houshmandzadeh

10 C. Johnson (4)

10 D. Jackson

10 Westbrook - RB

10 D. Mason

10 I. Bruce

15. Red Zone Stats - Did you know?

* 17 of Tom Brady's 20 TD passes this year originated in the red zone

* Ben Roethlisberger has thrown 5 INT's in the red zone this year

* Tony Romo is 22 of 32 inside the red zone this season

* Marc Bulger has the most red zone completions with 40. 15 of his 16 TD passes were in the red zone

* Torry Holt leads all players with 23 RZ targets. He has only caught 12 of them for 52%. Coincidentally, he has a 53% reception percentage on all other passes thrown his way.

I have Rudi Johnson at #11 in rushing (936 yds) and Chad Johnson #1 in receiving (1147 yds)?

Oh man...how did I miss that? :bag: OK, looks like there are two with both in the top 15 then.

I always figured he would have a much higher catch percentage than 53%.I would like to say that's a result of Bulger chucking garbage at his #1 WR when he's in trouble, but there are too many passes thrown his way to drop his percentage that much.Interesting...

Good stuff as always. Regarding "New England is 14 of 17 on 4th down attempts this year.", opposing teams are something like 0-5 trying to get a 4th down conversion against the Pats. Nice combination!

Plaxico isn't a top wr?

3. Interesting Stat of the Week - Eli Manning tosses a TD every 137.6 yards passing. Fewest yards per TD in the NFL (minimum 2500 yards).
So what can we conclude from this? He throws more when they are closer to the end zone? He is very efficient with his possessions? He throws his picks early in a series? Something else?

His running game moves the team down the field.

McAllister is tied for 19th in rushing yds (61 yds from 15th overall). Colston is 14th in receiving yards.

The coaching staff taught them to lightly tag the quarterback and stand up immediately to avoid a penalty.

Michael Vick does not have 2500 passing yards (and at 1892, he may not reach 2500 yards), but he is currently "beating" Eli with 126.1 passing yards per passing TD.

VY, due to not starting early in the year has 10 TDs and 1,480 something yards. So, he'd be 4th on your list IF he had the yards/games. He's 5-4 as a starter and the #4 FF QB over the span of the last 5 weeks.Carry on.

and Boldin #9 (920) & James #17 (810)

and Ward #16 (786) & W Parker #4 (1199)

Interesting stuff, even with the (not so) subtle pimping of a mediocre Panthers team. They can stop Steven Jackson, but they can't consistently play good team football.

No, they can. They play their best games when they're not supposed to win, which isn't very often. ;)
