When do you cut bait? (1 Viewer)

So my qb is set. Arod, Hasselbeck and Tebow.

I have been shopping Hasselbeck around for 3 weeks and no one wants him. He can start for 3-4 of the teams. They are starting Kolb, Ponder, Glabbert. And the owners of Brady, Brees, Romo don't want backup qbs.

I'm sure once I drop Hasselbeck, one of the owners is going to pick him up.

At times it's good to keep that space filled so that they can't pickup that player, but sometimes you need that roster spot for another depth.

When do you just say screw it and just cut bait and get yours?

If there is someone else who can actually get in your lineup and contribute and there is no trade market...time to cut him.

PS - You're probably asking too much for Hasselbeck.

maybe just ask for a player that is slightly better than then one u are going to pick up from FA. Who are u looking to pick up and what have u asked for Hasselbeck?

In most of the leagues I play in, whenever someone says "I'm putting Player X on the trading block", that is synonymous with "Player X is the next person I'm going to drop."So maybe the other owners recognize the pattern.

Also, I think mid-level QBs are worth next to nothing when trading in a 12-team, start 1 QB league. The owners starting Gabbert and Ponder probably realize that trading away a decent WR or RB will hurt their team more than it will help it.

This. Don't expect an every week starter at WR or RB to be traded to you just because you think you are giving them a starter. QBs are not as valuable as the other positions - especially when you are talking about Hasselback. If you have a player who you know won't be starting for you barring injuries then drop him if there are no takers for a trade. Who cares if someone picks him up, he was no use to you.

Sell Tebow instead. Hasselbeck has no upside and is unlikely to keep up the pace he started. He has performed better than Kolb/etc. but would it be surprising if he stunk it up and Locker played all December? Either drop Hasselbeck or sell Tebow instead.

:thumbup:You don't want to get into a rut of always offering up the least valuable and most expendable asset you have. I informed my league that I would trade one of Ryan or Newton. I would have let either one go for the right value but that value was obviously different in each case. I believe I got a lot more interesting offers this way.

I'm thinking Tebow's value wouldn't be much better til he strings 3 or 4 good weeks together.Very hard to move QBs, even in leagues that score them highly.I was in the same situation holding Rodgers/Stafford & Newton. I certainly don't need 3 QBs in this league but I'm not going to drop one of these guys so that the guy starting Ryan can improve his team 12 points a game. You would think he would have some interest, but nope, thinks Ryan will turn it around & out perform Newton & Stafford the rest of the way. Finally made a deal with the Manning owner who was starting Grossman, but it improved his team much more than mine.

I'm in a similar position. I have Nicks, Steve Smith (Car), and Marshal starting for me at WR and I have Deion Branch and Harvin on my bench. Right now Branch is in the top 20 in scoring in my league (start 3 WR, 10 team) so obviously he is better then some teams starters. I've been trying desperately to deal him since I don't think he is anything special and I feel like there are still WR's on the WW that can outproduce him here on out, but no one wants any part of him, yet if I drop him I can almost guarantee he will be picked up immediately. It really sucks. Same with with RB's on my team. I start B.Wells and Foster and have Greene, Torrain, and F.Jones on my bench. I've been trying to package Greene, Jones, and Branch for a high end RB1 and I've just been getting laughed at, I've even tried Branch + Jones for a middle of the road RB and nothing. I'm now trying Branch + Jones for a slightly better WR and I expect I'll still get nowhere. No one wants Jones because of the injury, yet if I cut him he will get snapped up instantly.

I'm in the same exact spot as you, almost. Arod/Hass owner, could have had Tebow too. Here's my take:

Hang on to Hasselback through ARod's bye week. He's got a tasty matchup against Indy on Wk 8. The Hass owner in my league tried to sell Hass, but overshot his real value as a nice QB2, even if he's producing QB1 numbers right now. He dropped him to the wire and I had to choose last week. Hass or Tebow? I put in healthy bids for both, but I liked Hass's matchup better than Tebows week 8 against Detroit. I could have had both, but I can't spare the room for 3 QB's, especially when you have a stud/non-sittable QB like Rodgers.

I recommend you sell Tebow if possible after his first 25+ point game (maybe as early as this Sunday). Don't get greedy. Go for someone's underperforming WR2 or upside RB3. Maybe work a 2 for 1 upgrade. Hass really has no value after week 8, unless you are nervous about ARod's health. If your team is good, it's hard to justify the spot to Hass. I'd look to cut bait in week 9.

The thing is, you would not want the player another team drops to pick up your 2nd QB from the waiver wire. That's why a trade won't go through.

I think there is a certain value in 14 teams or larger to keeping two top 10 QBs on your roster. You will literally starve other teams out of the playoffs that way. But I don't think that works as well in a 12 teamer and I don't think Hass is at that level. For example, I have Cam and Romo in a 14 team 6 pt Pass TD league and I cannot trade these guys for the life of me. But by having both on my team I am dominating these stubborn idiots week in and week out who would rather roll out Bradford with all of 60 pts than trade for Cam with 180 pts. As long as I maintain that QB advantage, I'm still winning whether or not I can't upgrade Gore to Rice.

You think Hass is a starter? Put your money where your mouth is. Trade Rodgers for a stud at another spot, and roll with Hass/Tebow.

If you offered me three weak players for a high end rb or wr, I would laugh at you too. Three decent players don't equal a great player, contrary to the beliefs of about half of the people offering deals in fantasy football. Funny thing is, they are never interested when you counter with your own three for one.

Greene has been a fringe top-20 RB. Felix isn't even top 25, and is a constant injury risk. Branch has 2 clunkers, otherwise been consistent. Still, I would not give up a high-end RB1 for this package. You may need to target RB10-15 range.

Was going to reply the same thing.

I've got a similar situation coming up in my dynasty league. I have Rodgers and P. Manning, with Rodgers bye coming up next week I will have to drop Manning to pick up someone to carry me through. My hedge when Manning went down was to pick up M. Flynn, as Rodgers back-up, thinking that that gives me GB's QB's for the season and that at least by week eight IND would of either had a timetable for his return or would IR Manning. So now I have to figure out if I want to go into a week without a starting QB and take the probable loss (tied for first with 3 other teams), outright release Manning to pick up Palmer or Ponder, try to trade Manning for something (probably not doable), release Flynn (who I could not re-aquire this year), or ideally have IND IR manning where I could retain him but open up a slot. I have had my eyes on Flynn since last year and would hate to lose him in a dynasty league to retain Manning when his outlook is unknown but I would also hate losing a week by not rostering a complete line-up when my division is a four-way jam. I also look at that I could acquire Palmer this week but I am not in love with his dynasty outlook, where I could probably hold off on Ponder until next week and get to see if there is some news on Manning. Ponder is someone I would like to get that is out there. At the end of last season I had Rodgers, Manning, and Palmer all on my roster and was going to deal both Manning and Palmer to build up my RB core but that plan took a detour. I am not to upset that somebody else will get Palmer for nothing from me but I would like to get something for Manning.

I know I started out high, but I had to start somewhere, I'd gladly take someone lower especially for Jones + Branch. Thing is no one will give me ANYTHING for those 2. I'd prefer any sort of an upgrade over F.Jones even a small one and then grab the WR I want off the WW. I'm getting to the point where I'm about to start asking for Defenses that have juicy match-ups week 15 and 16 since I'm 6-0 and looking to be in good shape. I figure that's better then just cutting them.Any ideas on which RB's I would have any chance at getting for a package of Felix Jones and Branch?

Blount, Daniel Thomas, Ingram maybe, Hillis maybe - Felix has a HAS so you have to look for an RB with a question mark.

I don't see any of those guys besides Hillis being an upgrade to Felix Jones, especially in ppr.

I think there's a good chance you're either (a) in a league with reasonable people who recognize that Deion Branch is the 4th option in an offense that won't be passing the ball as much going forward; and also recognize that there are good WRs on the waiver wire and Felix Jones is injured for the next 2 to 11 weeks based on his prior history OR (b) in a guppy league where the owners are not involved enough, knowledgeable enough, or care enough to make any trade with you (especially one where YOU are proposing the deal). If the guppies are starting Blaine Gabbert, then they are probably too dumb to realize they need an upgrade at QB. You probably won't be the one to convince them.If it's the former, be reasonable and don't worry about dropping someone who is untradeable and not worth as much to your team as someone on waivers. If it's the latter, I would give up on trading altogether.

...and that's the reason you aren't getting deals. You are valuing your players to highly. Especially a guy who is probably out for the next 3-4 weeks, who hasn't been that good anyway.

Is or was? Past performance or future expectations?

You are amazed that others view him the same as you do.Maybe they're smarter than you think.
