When do you decide to sell the future to win today? (1 Viewer)

If you have a fairly strong team that is missing one important component to boost you into title contention, do you sell the future to do it?

Do you assume that since you will be picking late anyway that your future draft picks will be worth less to you, but seem more valuable to a bottom feeder looking to add another 1st round pick?

I will relate this to fantasy baseball keeper leagues but if I have a shot at winning this year and think I can go over the top with a trade then I do it. I worry about next year, next year.

Lame answer, but I think it depends on a LOT of things.

1. Can your team get hot in the playoffs and win it all as currently constituted? Generally, if you can make the playoffs, anything can happen.

2. Can your team get hot in the playoffs and win without <Player A>? <Player A> being a veteran player that you're considering moving for some kind of future equity. It's a bonus to get some future equity but still have a chance to compete this year if you just get hot at the right time.

3. How desperate are the other managers in your league to a player such as <Player A>? Like if I have an older player, let's say Harrison or T.O. or something, I'm not going to trade them just because they're old and my team may suck - if you can get offers that represent value, then do it. But don't lowball because you want to "get young" - TO/Harrison is worth more on your team next season than a crappy rookie pick or something will be in the next 3 seasons (most likely).

And to a lesser extent...

4. Project what kind of player you can expect to add in the rookie draft next season with your current pick, and with whatever pick you're considering moving too. For example, I'm in a couple 16 team leagues - if I think my pick will be around 11th or 12th, which might be the 5th or 6th RB, 2nd or 3rd QB, or a top IDP, then I can let that pick go earlier if another team "blowing it up" ignores # 3 and is willing to sell an impact player rather cheaply.

I believe the goal every year is to win a championship this year. We have owners that sell their team every year around this time and they always help someone else win it. If I have a winning record at week 9 I try to go for it every year.

I agree with a few guys here. I never care about next season, if I can make a trade today that wins me the league this year but hamstrings me a bit next year, I do it EVERY TIME. If you are confident in the moves you make and your ability to draft like I am and I'm sure many others are, it's not even an issue. Trade now and good luck. Worry about next year in July

If i can move my late first rounder for a solid player i always do it. Its the only win to win fast IMO.

I trade the pick and a good player for a stud WR or QB..I throw the kitchen sink at a good RB top 10. Too much of a gamble to find a top 10 RB in a rookie draft. Even if you pick 6 out of 10 that end up being great you failed 4 time IMO. Get the producers now..

i say it depends.. on what is equitable in the league, I have the rights to adrian peterson, and my current backs are TBell, Caddy, and Reggie Bush.. i was trying to get Stephen Jackson, . the owner won't settle for less than Caddy and Peterson.... as crappy as he is,i just can't do it...

Couldn't agree more. My theory has always been: "never trade your core unless you're getting a core player in return, use the late 1st rounder to upgrade when possible, try to get young talent thrown in when 'going for it'".I think the late 1st round dynasty pick is the most overrated pick in fantasy football. I'd just assume have a 2nd rounder.
