Random stranger talks to you at a party (well, not now but when we get back to that kind of thing) asks you where you're from. What do you reply?

Depends on the demo/location of the party

If I'm in a local party close to home I say my city

If I am out of state I say my state

If I'm talking to someone and they are non US I may reply I'm of Portuguese decent.

Maybe it's just me, if I'm outside the region it's often "Tennessee valley"

But that might just be because it's more well received than "Alabama"

Although at times, and my wife's common answer "Huntsville" isn't accurate - but if you answer "Madison" nobody knows where that is, they assume you're from Wisconsin (or one of the other 30 Madison's)

I tell people I grew up outside of Detroit, which is often followed by responses varying from jokes/questions about how bad it was, to the occasional "I'm sorry," as though they had something to do with me living there.

Connecticut. No big cities to speak of.

"Connecticut," I'll say. If that confuses, or I'm nervous or in the mood of narrowing or explanation, I'll follow it with "Back East. Hartford, CT/Springfield, MA."

Rep SPFLD.

If it is someone who lives in the same general area, I will say the city I live in (suburb of Detroit). If I am out of State then I will just say Detroit.

Either

“I was born in Michigan, moved to Florida when I was 13, moved to Atlanta after college for 15 years, then spent a year in Afghanistan, 4 years in Japan, and now I live in DC.”

or

”DC”

(Even though it’s really northern Virginia)

Yep

I didn't bother to tell people the county I lived in was one of the wealthier in the nation at the time.

I remember when Peedi Crakk was a thing.  Philly up! State Prop and G-G-G-G-G-G G Unit.

Okay, and Free, okay, yeah (?)
Que tu quieres mujeres, said she blow la-la
FLIPSIDE - and she my baby mama
Get wild! Okay

I live in another State so I usually just say I'm originally from Michigan. Most don't know any other city than Detroit so they assume that is where I grew up.  It isn't.  When I lived in Michigan I just said the city of course.

Although when I lived in Chicago I just said the city, when traveling or visiting family in Michigan, not the State of Illinois.  Hmm..

Similar to this - if in my county, I'll say the city. If somewhere else in Northern California, I'll say Marin (county).  Outside of NoCal, I'll say "Bay Area".  If not on the West Coast, I'll add "San Francisco" to that.

Depends where I am...

In my county, I say my city.

In the US, I say Atlanta.

In the Milky Way, I say Earth.

Typically I say Oregon. If it's a local deal, I'd say Portland.

When I was little, my mother would say I came from heaven.  As I got older, she would say I came from a place much farther south of heaven.  I think she was just covering up for my accent.
