Where do the Florida Panthers relocate to? (1 Viewer)

I've heard more than a few talking heads say that the NHL needs to pare down a few teams - not move some poorly attended one (or bring in new teams).
Just heard a conversation on the radio a couple days ago talking about how much better the players coming out of college are these days which makes expansion viable.

Let's get a team in the Dakotas. Can't be worse than Miami, Phoenix, or Vegas.
I still say Alaska. That whole state is being neglected.
No schtick -- even with a metro area about the size of Halifax's (~400K), I bet Anchorage would support a team.
You're close. Fairbanks is the answer.
Given the draw of Ice Dogs and UAF games, I would disagree with Fairbanks. Anchorage should do well I think. Or at least better than Florida.

I'm not joking. I was when I was talking about the NFL team going there, just because I wanted to see football played on a true frozen tundra. If the NFL can go to Europe, I think the NHL can go to Anchorage. I think it would be pretty cool to see a pro team up there.

Retractable roof.

An Anchorage team would be awesome.

Oakland and we break out the Seals jerseys and the white skates again
They could play at the O.co Stadium.
Actually, Oracle Arena (home of the Warriors) is going to be vacant soon Perfect place for them. But the presence of the sharks in San Jose pretty much blocks out any NHL team there.
No. I want them to play in that crappy falling down baseball stadium. I think that would be WAY cooler.

I don't see them relocating anywhere other than the Everglades. Panther telemetry indicates the species can't co-exist with automobiles anywhere else in Florida.

I changed my mind. Almost half of the states population is in the Anchorage area. You're correct.

I'm thinking these games could sell out every night. I guess the only problem would be players not wanting to live in Alaska.

But an retractable roof arena would be so awesome in the NHL.

I read or heard someone spitballing about a 2nd team in Toronto a few days ago. Their outlandish idea had MLSE (Maple Leafs owners) allowing a new Toronto expansion team (or relocated Panthers) to play in the Air Canada Centre, while they build a 30/35/40k seat arena to move the Maple Leafs to. Sure it would dwarf every other arena in the league, but Toronto fans (and as importantly corporations) would likely still fill it and the league owners and players would be happy to share an extra few hundred million dollars it would bring in.

MLSE probably has some cash lying around right now....maybe Bon Jovi can help finance a purchase of the Panthers instead of a certain NFL team...

Baltimore has a very anti-DC issue in just about every area of life. However, from what I understand, they do support the Capitals. Not sure if it's enough support, though, to support their own team. Nor do I know if it's so much support that you can't get enough fans to switch.

But, if Baltimore wasn't so close to DC, I think it would be a possibility.
Both cities support football teams despite their proximity. Why couldnt they both have a hockey team?

I dont think having enough fans would be the problem. Any team in Alaska will have problems attracting players because nobody wants to live there even if it is just forbthe season.

Definitely enough people to do so.

Like I said, Baltimore has a big anti-DC thing going on. After the Colts left, nobody in Baltimore became a Redskins fan. They waited around for their own team to root for again. They simply don't root for anything DC. They hate DC. However, from what I understand, that's a little different when it comes to the Caps. I hear Baltimore actually supports the Caps and there's a decent fan base there. So, if they got a team, would Caps lose those fans? If so, then the Caps would fight it and claim Baltimore as their own market. If not, then would there be enough non-Caps hockey fans in Baltimore to support a team? I don't know.

Is there a newer facility than the old Baltimore Arena?

Not that I'm aware of. So obviously a Baltimore team would want a new arena.

That is where the Caps play whenever they play preseason games in Baltimore, I think.

I wouldn't mind that if Angelos ends up owning the Baltimore NHL team, but the Caps own their TV rights.

Im sure that as long as there are enough fans of a particular sport many would switch to their new local team and stick with them as long as they are at least consistently competitive.

The Texans carved out their own territory and the Jags were profitable initially until they became mismanaged for so long. Granted, football is so much more popular than hockey I think most new, or relocating, teams in the major sports would get converts and keep them if they put out a decent product.

If the Panthers were able to get decent management and turn things around a bit I think they could stake a claim in a city thr size of Baltimore.

Seattle

Quebec City

2nd team in Toronto

those should be the top-3 choices, imo

then you have places like KC, Houston, Vegas, and Portland.

I don't think there's much interest in Milwaukee, and doesn't seem like Hartford is going to get a 2nd chance. Alaska isn't going to happen either. No real opinion on Baltimore, but I think the Caps fans were pretty terrible before Ovechkin showed up and they might not stick around that long anyway.

I'm not sure anyone thinks Alaska is really happening. But it would be cool if it did. It's kind of a shame that there are really so many good choices out there, but not enough talent to support that many franchises. Each one of those cities you've named could probably support a team very well.

Panthers stopped giving away so many free tickets this year so their attendance numbers should tank even after the snowbirds show up.
If they barely sold any tickets they should at least give enough away to avoid the embarrassment of a nearly empty arena.
no they shouldn't

how can you ever expect to sell tickets if half the people who show up got in for free?

they've been trying to fill that place up for years by giving away tickets for free to anyone with a pulse. season ticket holders don't really appreciate that king of thing and it just cheapens the entire product.

all the free tickets they used to hand out make attendance figures meaningless.

real paid attendance > fake free attendance.

I meant like the last day before the game. Try to get some bodies in the building so it doesnt look that bad. Not premium seats of course.

Do they heavily discount the tickets on the final day of sales?

"We could get 15,000 people into the arena if we gave away 5,000 seats,'' he added. "That's not fair to the community, to the players and the folks paying $100 sitting next to a guy paying 10.''

I guess it is a no win situation for them unless they start winning.

That's why it's called a no win situation.

In think the owner should just wrestle a bear at center ice to get some butts in the seats.

three years ago I was at gulfstream park in the poker room. At the top of the hour they splashed the pot with a pair of panthers tickets. I woke up under the gun with 10-2 offsuit. I folded.... so did everyone else including the small blind. The big blind with his $2 forced beet won a pair of panthers tickets. The first thing he did was try and give them away... not sell them... give them away....

Hartford is the only solution.
Why is Seattle not a solution?
It's a question of having an arena and being too close to Vancouver. I think the people who could pay for a team and an arena really want a basketball team again. The arena is going to have to be dual purpose. I don't think there's enough drive in the city to fund a new stadium.

I also think Seattle falls within Vancouver's range of influence, or whatever it's called. The new owners would have to pay additional money to the owners of the Canucks for coming into their market. Not sure how much this would be, but it is a consideration.

For all the people saying Portland, it doesn't look like that's going to happen. Paul Allen owns the Blazers and doesn't want to draw any fans away from them. It's kind of ridiculous since basketball and hockey fans don't really overlap, in my experience. We have a minor league team here that's gone to the WHL finals the last three seasons. I want to say they draw 8000ish on nights when there is a groupon. They did manage to sell out game 7 of the finals last year. They lost.

I don't think this is the case. First I've heard it raised as a concern anyway.

There is plenty of money in Seattle. Seems inevitable to me that they will get an arena built and fill it up with an NHL and NBA team.
