CHARGERS "HOME" GAME UP IN THE AIR

Adam Schefter of NFL Network reports that it's still not known where Sunday's game between the San Diego Chargers and the Houston Texans will be played.

The possibilities include Sun Devil Stadium in Tempe, Arizona, the Los Angeles Coliseum, and Texas Stadium.

The situation, per Schefter, is fluid, there are no firm answers, and no one knows when decisions will be made.

For now, the Chargers are practicing in Arizona, due to the fires in the San Diego area.

Regardless of the final destination of the game, it will be difficult to sell tickets. When the Chargers-Dolphins game was moved to Arizona under similar circumstances in 2003, admission was free and donations for the relief efforts were taken.

Why wouldn't they just get it into LA already?

Then the NFL would at least get a taste of an LA football game since they are dying to get back in there.

Does is matter? Is it really going to effect your decisions?
Seems to matter to you that I simply asked WHERE the game is going to be played. Having a bad morning there guy?
Somewhat. Mostly has to do with the thinly veiled WDIS posts. But seriously are you going to sit or start any players depending on this? I certainly wouldn't let this influence my starting Gates or LT2.
Wow.....that is a little grumpy......I didn't see this as a WDIS thread in the least.....

According to Rick Gosselin, Dallas and Houston are the two options if the game gets moved. Not sure what happened to Phoenix...

Texas Stadium possible venue for Chargers-Texans game

Fires could prevent San Diego from hosting Sunday's contest

PHILADELPHIA – The Cowboys have a bye this weekend, but that doesn't necessarily mean there will be no NFL game at Texas Stadium.

The NFL is considering Texas Stadium as an option for a San Diego home game against the Houston Texans. Fires this week in San Diego have forced thousands from their homes, and the city is using Qualcomm Stadium as an evacuation center.

If the Chargers cannot host the game, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said the two options would be Dallas and Houston. Goodell said the NFL was waiting word from San Diego mayor Jerry Sanders later Wednesday whether Qualcomm could still stage the game.

"We heard the wind has shifted and things are changing," Chargers president Dean Spanos said. "But the most important thing is the people – taking care of them. You can play a football game anytime."

Goodell said if San Diego is able to host the game, the NFL might push it back to Monday night to give the city more time to prepare.

It could be the third time in four years the NFL has moved a game because of a natural disaster. In 2003, the NFL moved a Dolphins-Chargers game out of San Diego to Phoenix because of fires. In 2005, the NFL moved a Giants-Saints game out of New Orleans to New York because of Hurricane Katrina.

But a football game is the least of the concerns for the Chargers, who have already moved to Phoenix to practice this week.

"We have 40 families that have been affected in our organization alone," Spanos said. "Our concern is about them and all of our family friends in San Diego. That's our priority right now."

I'm sure the league office if frantically working on figuring out how to use another natural disaster to give the NY Giants a 9th home game. Again.

Hoping Dallas, it would be nice to see the Texans in anopen air stadium...since they always have the f-in roof closed at reliant

Saber put you people on notice. Don't act surprised when he lowers the boom on you. Even if he is coming from way out in deep left field...

That was my first thought. You would think the State of Cali would want that as well to keep any hotel revenues in the state.

The current L.A. stadiums simply aren't NFL quality. I think that's a big factor. Also with the fires all over SC, traveling isn't such a picnic, and the air quality all over the area is getting bad.It would seem to me that putting the game in the Texans' stadium would make the most economic sense - I'd think it'd offer the best chance that people would pay for tickets there with the largest turn out since it'd basically be an extra Texans home game.

While this is true, the league was highly criticized for giving the Giants a 9th home game during Katrina. For an example, see kupcho1's post.

Here in Houston, sports radio is mentioning Dallas, since they have the bye and the stadium is available. Mon. night would cause too many changes to the tv broadcast ect. which places it as a longshot.

I'd bet on it being in Dallas

From Bob McNair:
"I believe that if the decision is made today or tonight, the game will be played at Texas Stadium," Texans owner Bob McNair told the Houston Chronicle. "I think if the decision isn't made today, there's a good chance we'll host the game."

I was so p.o.'ed when the Giants were just "given" another home game. Completely ignorant by the NFL considering that little advantage could cost a team a playoff oppurtunity.

So I don't think the Texans should get another homegame, but Dallas would be fine.(not that many Texans fans here anyway)

In fact I would go to the game....as long as most of the money goes to help the victims.

I think giving the Texans another home game makes the most sense. It's a small advantage, but that's fairly unimportant in the grand scheme of things. What's more important, IMO, is picking a venue that will fill up with fans interested in the game.

No team should get an extra home game so the NFL can pocket more money. AZ makes the most sense. Sell the tickets cheap and donate them to the fire relief fund.

Sun Devil Stadium is the best option. The Chargers are already in Arizona so they won't have to travel again and Phoenix is a hell of a lot more neutral than say Houston or Dallas. Sell tickets and parking super cheap just to cover the costs of parking attendant and stadium workers salaries and if you make a profit, the remainder goes 100% to the Red Cross relief effort in So Cal.

As I said in another thread, people who don't live in Texas have no clue as how little support the Texans have statewide.

Too bad they can't go to Vegas. Hawaii would be good too, but the travel would be too big a deal I suppose.

Does it matter that there is an ASU game on Saturday?? Don't know if there is a turnaround time issue because of this or possibly hotel availability ramifications?

Why not play it at Qualcomm for the people evacuated from their homes to have a little reprieve/enjoyment for the afternoon?

Does anyone know what happened with the season ticket holders that held seats to the last game that was moved? Did they just get refunded? As I recall it was even more last minute than this one will end up being, but I was curious as to how the Chargers handled things with their paying fans.

I can't imagine NBC or ESPN (which I believe is ABC) agreeing to any move in the afternoon time slot the game was originally supposed to be in. Thus, I think we'll be looking at a Sunday afternoon game still, at a site yet to be announced.

By local reports here in Dallas, it's starting to sound like they are leaning towards Texas Stadium. Stadium workers have been notified and placed on call.

Cowboys are on a bye, of course.

Gordon (Keith), what are you hearing?

The last time they moved the game to Arizona the admission was free. They had donation stations set up outside and $200,000 was raised to help the SD area. I am assuming if they move the game to Texas or Arizona they would have a similar structure. I'm guessing the NFL covers the cost of operating the stadium.

Ed Werder was on the radio this morning. He is saying Dallas is the likely spot if the game is moved (which I believe we should find out today). Interestingly though, he said the league is discussing having the game on Monday night in San Diego. He said QualComm is still being used, but on a small capacity (compared to before) and they expect no more comong in, and only people leaving there. Meaning the stadium should be available. Now the air quality...that's another story.

If the game is not going to be in San Diego, then Phoenix on Monday night would seem to be the best and fairest option at this point. Not sure why it's being abandoned.

From the San Diego Union Tribune:

Indications are Bolts won't bolt Qualcomm

TEMPE, Ariz., Oct. 25 (UNION-TRIBUNE)

It appears increasingly likely the Chargers will play at home Sunday, as evacuees leave Qualcomm Stadium and the weather cooperates in diminishing the firestorm in the county.

Mayor Jerry Sanders will announce his decision as to whether to allow the Chargers to host the Houston Texans at Qualcomm Stadium based upon the needs of the people who remain sheltered there.

NFL Live just reported that the game is likely to be played in San Diego Monday night, but may not be confirmed until tomorrow morning. If so, I wonder whether this would be televised nationally.

I'd rather see this game than that abortion of a denver team for a second straight week.

STILL NO DECISION ON CHARGERS GAME

The San Diego Chargers have announced . . . that no announcement is ready to be made about the location of their Week Eight game against the Houston Texans.

"[T]he Chargers remain in regular communication with both the City of San Diego and the National Football League," the team said in a statement. "The Chargers are working with the Mayor's Office and the NFL to ensure that all aspects of the situation are carefully evaluated and that the best possible decision for the people of San Diego is ultimately reached. The Chargers will continue to do everything possible to provide Mayor Sanders with the flexibility he needs to determine what is in the public interest."

The status of the game in in doubt because of fires in the San Diego area. If the game is not played at Qualcomm Stadium, it's expected to be played at Texas Stadium in Dallas.

Meanwhile, the evacuees who had been housed at Qualcomm Stadium have been moved to the Del Mar Fairgrounds. It could be a precursor to giving the green light for the Chargers to play at home.

Presumably, a decision will be made before Sunday.

I believe it will only be available in the normal team markets. And on Sunday Ticket. That's how it was done last time IIRC.
