Which 1st-round pick (ever) SHOCKED you the most... (1 Viewer)

What year did NE take Richard Seymour # 7 overall?? I remember being pretty surprised by that pick.

Ginn was surprising too. Not that he went too high (he was ranked pretty high by a lot of people), just that Miami took him. I thought for sure they would take Brady Quinn.

Dimitrius Underwood

From Wikipedia:

"Underwood played college football for Michigan State University and was selected by the Minnesota Vikings with the 29th overall pick in the 1999 NFL Draft. However, Underwood had missed most of his senior year, and his coaches at Michigan State warned NFL scouts that he wasn't mentally stable enough to play in the NFL.

After being drafted, he signed a five year, $5.3 million contract in August 1, 1999 but walked out of training camp the next day and never returned, saying he could not resolve the conflict between playing football and serving his Christian faith. "

Erik Flowers deserves a mention too. A 3rd or 4th round guy who shot up into the 1st round due to his workouts.
:drive:

I know a lot of people thought this as well. Still, I don't see why they thought Mia would draft Quinn. Quinn, unlike Ginn, would have been a reach at 7. I guess that is what the ND media machine can do.

I thought the Matt Jones pick was terrible. They needed a real WR, not an experiment.

It wasnt a huge surprise, but I believe Janikowski is the only kicker in the modern era drafted in the first round. There were a few others in the earlier days of the NFL.

Steve Little was drafted in the middle of the first round by the Rams in 1978.

As was the kicker I mentioned earlier... Russell Erxleben drafted by the Saints with the 11th pick in 1979. Janikowski is of course a contender, but he showed the potential in college of being that once in a lifetime prospect. He didn't turn out to be that kicker, but the potential was there at the time of the draft.

For this year I would have to go with Gosder Cherilus at pick 1.17 by the Lions. They traded down to draft a guy that would have probably dropped out of the first round. Flacco also seemed like a reach.

Worst one I can think of for KC is probably 1994 when KC took Greg Hill just on season after signing Marcus Allen.

2000 Sylvester Morris, 1986 Brian Jozwiak, 1995 Trezelle Jenkins were all bad as well, but that was not be known for a season or two, and they were not "Huh?" picks. Hill was exactly that for me.

I've seen just about every minute of every draft (ESPN Coverage) since 1991.

Biggest SHOCK pick to me was Demetrius Underwood, going to the Vikes in the late 1st, when he was projected no higher than the 4th round by most scouts.

Biggest fan reaction to a percieved SHOCKING pick I've seen in all my years of watching the draft was the Jets selecting Alex Van Dyke, WR, Pitt, at the top of the 2nd round in 1996. The Jets fans at RCMH had practically already enshrined Leeland McElroy, RB, Texas A&M, and were chanting his name as the pick came up. I really feared for Tags after he announced that pick. I've never seen a crowd so angry. Made the Eagles selection of McNabb over RW look almost pleasant.

Easy choice....Mike Junkin, Cleveland Browns

Mike Junkin, Round 1, 1987: Cleveland moved up 19 draft positions in the first 2 rounds by swapping picks with the Chargers, who coveted LB Chip Banks. Banks, in a bitter contract dispute with Cleveland, departed the team and left a gaping hole in a once great LB corps. Marty Schottenheimer shocked the world by drafting Junkin fifth overall. This was easily the worst trade/pick in Browns history. Not only was Junkin an unknown from Duke, he was injury prone. To make matters worse, "Mad Dog," as he was called in college, projected to be a fifth or sixth round selection, so even IF Schottenheimer saw something in the kid, he could have waited at least two or three rounds to acquire him. Junkin did make one sensational play for the Browns, albeit in pre-season, when he intercepted a pass in the flat and returned it for a touchdown. Later, Schottenheimer admitted that Mad Dog was out of position on the play, and the interception was a fluke.

I remember chuckling when SF picked kick return specialist Dexter Carter with their late 1st round pick several years ago.

I haven't been following the draft for many years but the pick that shocked me most was Jason Campbell.

That was the year San Francisco was considering Rodgers or Smith with the number one pick. San Fran takes Smith and Rodgers falls to Green Bay at 24.

The very next pick Washington takes Campbell. I did not think Campbell had a first round grade and didn't think Washington was going QB that early.

Washington acquired the pick a couple of days before the draft and it was widely reported they were targeting Campbell

He wouldn't have dropped out of the first. There were eight tackles drafted in the first round (actually, I count seven, but I've seen about ten different articles say eight), and Cherilus definitely had a first-round grade. Not many Charger fans expected him to be available at #27 -- but if he happened to fall that far, he's the guy a lot of people wanted.

Kyle Brady?!?!!??!??
That was my first thought as well.Thinking a little longer about it I think my vote changes to...

Sebastian Janikowski 1.17 2000
I came to post Sea Bass myself, who takes a kicker in the first?
The question was which pick shocked you the most.As dumb as that pick was, it was NOT a shocker. During the ESPN broadcast, they were asking Raider fans in the stands who they wanted, and they were all screaming Janikowski. The Raiders lost several games that previous year because of horrendous kicking, there was talk about SeaBass to Oakland all spring.

Easy

1987 Cleveland Browns, pick #5 in the first round. Mike Junkin. Who? That's what Browns fans everywhere were asking when they made the pick for a guy they could have gotten in the 3rd round or even later.

 Shottenheimer :lmao:

Jim Druckenmiller, San Francisco's first pick 1997 (#26)

Steve Young was still in the saddle, though Garcia was still in the CFL - but nobody I knew thought Druckenmiller was pro-caliber, and he certainly was a shock pick in the first round, IMO.

Druckenmiller started 1 game, threw 52 passes in his pro career, and was cut after 1998 (0 passes in his second season).
