Based upon the history of the NFL draft, we can make a pretty strong argument that at least 2 of the top 5 RBs drafted this year will be busts if past history is any indicator.

Yet every year FF owners make arguments as to why each of the top 5 will be very good to great RBs in the NFL despite what history has taught us.

So let's try to figure out who the busts will be from this year's class & why. Which 2 of these 5 guys won't make it in the bigs & why not:

Reggie Bush

DeAngelo Williams

Lawrence Maroney

Joseph Addai

LenDale White

Have at it.

white because he has bad work habits and will find things are a lot tougher when defenses can concentrate on stopping you.

Bush will be considered a bust by some but only because they have insane expectations.

I think this will be just like the 1997 NFL draft, where there was only one bust -- Byron Hanspard.

The other four guys combined for three Super Bowl rings, 26 finishes in the top 24 and seven finishes in the top 10.

I could easily be wrong, but I'm not high on Addai. He could post solid stats given the offense he is in, but I don't believe he warranted a first round selection. Dominic Rhodes may be the best the kid has to learn from, and he's fighting him for the job.

If Mcnair leaves, the Tennessee offense is just going to be god awful. White may find it hard to succeed there. Chris Brown would suck as a mentor. Travis Henry may be able to help a bit there, but will he be on the team at the time?

I think Bush has too much going to bust. So much will be invested in him, they'd better have made damn sure he doesn't. Won't be asked to be a 20 carry back initially. Has Deuce MCallister to learn from.

I think Williams is going to be a great back. Great skill set, great college career, good team that committed to the run when they had it at their disposal. Deshaun Foster, eh cold show the kid a few things, but I really think Williams is already great.

Maroney-New England seems like a breeding ground for success. Maroney may have been the best runner in the draft.

My thoughts from an earlier thread:

Addai is my pick as the most probable to be a bust of the top 5 RBs picked this year.

Addai has a significant injury history and did not perform very well in when competing at the Senior Bowl, and has doesn't have much of a resume as a blocker. He runs upright, plays smaller than his size, and he's doesn't play as fast as his timed speed - which wasn't exceptional to begin with.

Last year we had people pimping the top 4 RBs taken as being future studs - as we do every year. And last year JJ Arrington had the least tools to compete at the NFL level as a featured RB. This year, that tag goes to Addai.

If I had to pick the top 5 RBs in order as most likely to fail based upon their resumes so far, I'd go this way:

1) Addai (see above)

2) LenDale White - poor attitude, not serious about the combine or pro day, one dimensional runner.

3 tie) Reggie Bush - not big enough to be an every down RB, speed of pro Ds will limit what he could do in college.

3 tie) Lawrence Maroney - Remains to be seen whether he can be a complete RB, but peronally I like his chances.

5) DeAngelo Williams - most complete RB of this draft. Does everything well, and will absorb a tremendous amount of work.

If I had to guess how they'll shake out for their careers:

Addai - bust

White - bust

Bush - solid CoP player, but doesn't come close to expectations & hype

Maroney - very good player verging on stud territory but never quite getting there

Williams - the cream of the crop & a future stud

Good draft overall in 1997. Real good draft.

My picks:

DeAngelo Williams - Maybe I'm missing something, but I've never really been that impressed with him. His statistics are great, his workouts were great, and he apparently did well at the Senior Bowl, but I can't shake this feeling that he's just not as good as advertised. He doesn't quite jump out in his highlights like you'd expect. He looks small, he appears to lack power, and he doesn't quite seem to have the explosive burst that I look for. I don't think he's a total bum, but I'm not sure if he's capable of beating out Foster and I don't see him as a future stud in the NFL.

Joseph Addai - Addai put on a show at the combine, but he doesn't stand out to me as a particularly good prospect. He doesn't look good in his highlights and he was never a star in college. He should have every opportunity to win significant playing time as a rookie, but I don't think he's the kind of elite player who can hold a starting RB job in the NFL for an extended period of time.

Interesting bonus on a poll like this is how many times one of the RBs is predicted to be a bust given that people can pick two.

As of 122 votes so far, the least likely bust as picked by pollsters is DeAngelo Williams, followed closely by Maroney, who also as an interesting sidenote is listed twice as having 0 votes in combination with another RB. Also interesting to see that Addai is considered a more likely bust than White despite being picked in the 1st round in a very good situation.

Percentages of likely busts so far per the people here:

Williams 22/(2*122) 9.02%

Maroney 23/(2*122) 9.43%

Bush 27/(2*122) 11.07%

White 82/(2*122) 33.61%

Addai 90/(2*122) 36.89%

:goodposting: I agree on most of it, with a few exceptions :P :DeAngelo Williams reminds of Troy Davis so much, its scary..Davis had all the sports reporters and fantasy guys and GM's saying the same thing: "he's small but he plays big, he's compact, he's a tough kid, he was great in college", etc..

which is just another way of saying 'bust', imo..everyone seems to think that the second coming of Barry Sanders is just around the corner with predictions for Q-tip Griffin, Davis, Williams, etc..the fact is , it almost never happens and these guys continually become world-class busts..remember, he was selected 27th overall..to me, if he was that good, he would've gone much higher..

I like your opinion of Addai, it is going to be tough for him to learn all the naunces of a Peyton Manning-led offense..just watching Manning with all the pre-snap hand signals and posturing can be confusing for anyone let alone a rookie RB who'll be fighting for playing time behind Dom Rhodes..

White could be a bust for sure...his reportedly poor work ethic is troubling..but, by opening day, he will be the sleeper RB who is just a sprained ankle away from taking over the starting job..he has Chrissy Brown to beat out for the #1 spot on the Titans..Henry is likely to be a cap casualty or relegated to 3rd string.. with Chrissy Brown's injury potential, White could be a factor in 2006..

Maroney , is the best of the bunch outside of Bush..NE has a great coaching staff and they love to pound the ball with the RB's , especially in November and December when the cold weather kicks in. Lets face it, Dillon looks like he's seen better days, not unlike Eddie George when he signed with Dallas..Maroney could start opening day..

Bush is going to be a star..he is just too good...

What??? Addai was touted as the best blocker of this group.

all the criticisms of addai were said about dominick davis when he came out and addai is in a much better situation

They were also said about Trung Canidate.

Addai and White are the natural two busts (if you had to pick 2 out of 5) because they are the last two drafted - and each has a major question mark (Addai because of an unspectacular college career with an injury history - White because of his "attitude" and performance between the Rose Bowl and the draft).
