which Clinton Portis shows up? (1 Viewer)

Portis has a good match up vs. Buff at home

Portis was close friends with sean taylor (played together at Miami)

will Portis "win one for sean" and play hard or will Portis be too saddened and play poorly?

FYI...Portis did not participate in Wednesdays practice. Reason listed as "Back".
This is nothing new. He is always limited but reports from Washington gave him the entire day off because of his increased workload.Game of the season for Portis IMO.

I'm starting Portis with confidence. This guarantees a 18 rushes for 55 yards and 3 catches for 17 yards with no TD's performance.

Speculating on the mindset of a football player who's best friend just got murdered might be the most fruitless exercise I've ever seen on this board and that says a lot.

FYI...His workload was decreased last weekend. In the past month of games played, Portis had his lightest workload last week against Tampa & was spelled frequently by Betts during that game.

That is because they had 6 turnovers, most of which were in their own territory (not the 2 4th quarter picks). Betts didn't have an impact until the 2nd half.

XWeek 12 - 20 rushes + 5 receptions - Tampa

Week 11 - 12 rushes + 2 receptions - Dallas

Week 10 - 30 rushes + 4 receptions - Philly

Week 09 - 36 rushes + 0 receptions - Jets

My mistake...2nd lightest workload over the past month. Of course that means that over the past month, Portis' last two games were his lightest workload, which completely contradicts the Washington reports about giving him the entire day off because of an increased workload which was the point of my post.

Portis was responsible for two of the turnovers, which is also probably why Betts got an increased look.

I think it's likely that Portis comes out and runs with a vengeance. In fact, he's the player whose performance on Sunday I'd figure to be the most noteworthy in light of Taylor's death, given their closeness.

:hifive: That's what I'm hoping for...he gets the start as #2 RB over Edge

The corrollary to that is that I could easily see the following game for him against the Bears as being a big let down game.

Regarding the mindset of the Redskins for this game and not necessarily Portis in particular, I think they come out very flat. It's just going to be too tough to focus on football this week. It will be easy to get pumped up for the game on gameday with the crowd and all but I have to think their minds are elsewhere all week and they just won't be fully prepared. I remember how bad Buffalo looked after the Everitt injury and this is obviously worse...

Not thinking to positive for the #6 rb in your league are you?
No, I'm actually just overly confident in the kiss of death I can give players by inserting them in my line-up. In my league's scoring he's 9th in fantasy points per game. I'm happy with that as a second round pick but man the potential is there to lead the league. He just can't seem to get any free space to make moves or use his speed. Defenders are on him immediately. I hope he goes off but Murphy's law says he won't this week but will kill my Bears next week.

Everett was lingering during that time with his condition very much in doubt. Taylor's dead, with no unresolved issues as to him except for the investigation into who killed him. I think the 'Skins have a greater ability to refocus because of that. Now, that said I'd be lying if I thought anything was guaranteed on Sunday. We're all guessing.

:goodposting: Might as well just analyze the matchup and the tangable aspects like Portis' health and such because everybody handles tragedy like this differently.

I've never thought of Portis as a type of player that takes time off. If he's on the field, he's doing his best. I'd be surprised if he didn't play up to his physical ability. I'm not sure where he's at there. He did see reduced action last week. Could be that he's dinged and wouldn't have had a good week this week anyway.

what Portis had to say yesterday

"21 was Sean's number, and for me to put it on, I can't go out and emulate Sean's style. I can't go out and be Sean Taylor. There's no need to drag it along or carry along, or even tease the fans or the people that admire him in putting that jersey on. All I can do is go out and give everything I have. That's what Sean did week in and week out, time after time, always. I've been telling you for a while, that was the best player I've ever seen. For me to go out and put that jersey on, I can't live up to those expectations and I can't be Sean Taylor, so I won't even try it."
My guess is that Redskin emotions will be all over the map with highs and lows throughout the game. Portis's performance, and that of the whole team, may well depend on odd bounces of the ball. If a few breaks go against them during the game it wouldn't surprise me to see them just hang on and endure til the end of the game. If a break or 2 goes their way, however, I could see it being enough to lift them into steamrollering the opponent. It's so hard to guess.

Is there any physical reason why portis isn't practicing or is it the Taylor issue?
Supposedly, it's his "back", but he's not really had any back problems to speak of. They may just be resting him to keep him fresh and because he's apparently very emotional about this Taylor incident.

Any real chance he doesn't play?
I've heard nothing saying he won't, so . . . FWIW, I started him.

any predictions for today?

i personally dont think id be up for a football game if i had lost one of my best friends earlier in the week. BUT, thats me, and NO, im not a professional athelete either.

what does the pool expect today? before taylor, i thought 100 yards was highly probable with an 80% chance of TD, maybe even the possibility of two scores if the redskins got moving on buffalo. but i just cant put my finger on whether the redskins will come out highly pumped, or totally lethargic.

I can do way better than that: SJax, Portis, Kolby Smith, Selvin Young, Maroney, SJax, Portis, Kolby Smith, Selvin Young, Maroney, SJax, Portis, Kolby Smith, Selvin Young, Maroney, SJax, Portis, Kolby Smith, Selvin Young, Maroney, SJax, Portis, Kolby Smith, Selvin Young, Maroney. Going with SJax and Kolby Smith. So you can count on Portis going off.

Favre did pretty good following his Dad's death. I think Portis will play hard and have a good game to honor his friend.

Please put Portis in for Smith.
I'm surprised at how high he's ranked this week. There's just such a good chance that it's too much for him and his heart won't be in it. I guess the ranking is based on the fact that it could motivate or inspire him. I think I'm benching him for Graham.

In Portis' defense, the line gave him ZERO room/lanes to run. He was met at the line of scrimmage all day...
Lets be honest with one another.. CP is an average RB at this stage with his injuries and such. He just does not have that burst he used to have. I hope e can rest up and come back strong next season.

Couldn't disagree with you more here. You are downplaying the role of a healthy offensive line. Buffalo was in the backfield before he even touched the rock more than half of his carries.

Which Portis shows up? How about the bad Portis.
PPR leagues he had 14.00 points and is still a top 10 scorer amongst backs this season. IMO, that is wild considering the offensive line and lack of Campbell's development early in the season.

I saw the game and you're right. And when he wasn't hit in the backfield there were few holes at the line of scrimmage. Buffalo's front 7 played quite well today, and outplayed the Redskin O-line noticeably.

Any opinions of how CP will do bannged up on short rest?? He wasn't that good on Sunday, thank goodness he found paydirt. I'm worried about him this week...playing for first.

Is there anything wrong with him? That is, is he on the injury report, or is there talk of limited time/carries?

I thought he went out with an injury and was limping on the sideline? Didn't see an uptick in carries for Betts, though.
