I would drop SD down without Merriman. I like MIN but their QB play may keep the DEF on the field too much for them to remain strong by season's end. I am liking the CAR DEF more and more as a sleeper, plus they have a pretty decent schedule.
The Chargers defense has actually done pretty well the past three years when Merriman has not been on the field, so I wouldn't let that be much of a concern. I'd be more worried about the ever-collapsing middle of their defense. Jamaal Williams' skills seem to be rapidly deteriorating with age, and their inside linebackers aren't all that special and aren't all that deep. Their safeties are decent, but they still aren't scaring anyone.
The Eagles' D has looked pretty good. I wouldn't put them in the top 5 or anything, but I think they're being ranked too low because of the lack of turnovers last year. But now we have Samuel. The LBs look better, and Trent Cole should have another outstanding year.
A little homerism here, but the phins have now shut out 2 teams in the first half. One was KC, I know, but the other was Jax. While I do not think they will be top 5, they have improved their front 7, got their secondary healthy (they were super banged up last year), and have a QB in Pennington that will create some long drives, keeping opponents off the field. Add into that the emphasis on special teams (and Ted Ginn Jr) back there and you have the makings of a surprising Defense.
The Lions have looked strong against the run this pre-season. The players are really playing well as a unit. They are hitting hard and making quick reads and tackles. They have only given up 26 points in three games. Their pass defense is mediocre. I think they are a sleeper to be in the top half of defense for this season.
