I should preface this by saying I have no issues with Arizona and I'm thrilled they pulled off the huge win. Also, I always root for the Rays in the AL East simply because I despise both the Red Sox and Yankees evenly and was glad they knocked the SAWX out of the playoffs.

That being said, this poll came to mind after hearing that the Cards sold out the NFC title game in 6 minutes, two weeks after struggling to sell enough tickets to avoid an NFL-regulated blackout vs. the Falcons. And the sea of red in the stands this afternoon was almost blinding. In MLB, the Rays struggled to reach 5 digits worth of fans their first 9 years in existence but the started to fill the stadium out as they become title contenders. Soon, the crowd was no longer filled with visiting team fans who could get nice tickets for cheap but rather newly-Christened Rays' fans.

So are these hardcore fans, or did they just jump aboard once their teams gave them reasons to cheer?

Discuss.

Most fans were bandwagon jumpers at one time. Would we have as many annoying Pat and Steeler posters if those teams sucked year after year. They love to act as if they are tougher or smarter because they follow a winner. The folks who followed the Rays or Cards before this year should enjoy the success of their teams.

I don't know any fans of either team so I guess I have never even seen a bandwagoner for either one.

Oh, there were DEFINITELY bandwagon jumping Pats' fans. They'd love for you to believe they've been "down" since Day 1 but a lot of older Mass fans grew up idolizing the nearby Giants and this is and always will be a Red Sox town. But I've never questioned the loyalty of fans of teams like Pittsburgh. Think about how that team hadn't really done much since the glory days of the '70s. But I don't think there's ever been an issue of fans leaving them high and dry and only coming back when they were in title contention.

what should they have done - not bought tickets? Then everyone would be coming on here talking about what horrible fans they are and how Arizona doesn't deserve a team. It's a no-win situation.

But that's how it was 2 weeks ago when everybody thought Atlanta beating them was a foregone conclusion.
Right - and they were being criticized for being lame fans. Now they're bandwagon jumpers. So which is it?

Don't you have to have had success in the past in order to be labeled bandwagon jumpers? I would classify their fans as "starved" fans, not bandwagon jumpers. Why should anyone be on a wagon that has always proven to lead them to hell year after year after year after year .....

Cardinals fans all rooted for the Cowboys until about 2 hours ago. I only know of one Rays fan, and that's Capella, and he has been on their jock since the Boggs era. So I'll go with the Cardinals.

Eh. You'd probably do the same thing if you grew up a sports fan in Tampa or Arizona. Its easy to be a fan when you live in a city with a strong fan base and a local franchise with a rich history. Im excited for Arizona fans and hope this is the start of a sustained period of pride in their football team.

This poll is flawed. Obviously started by a Yankee and/or Giants fan that can't stand to see someone else get some time in the sun.

Pathetic. But expected of the NY scum.

Go Rays.

Go Cards.

I'd say the Rays because I've lived in both spots & the majority of Tampa is Yankees fans. Both are full of transplants due to the weather each provides.

Was at the game today & am heading to Tampa for the Super Bowl, supporting the Cardinals (even if I am a diehard Bears fan). I enjoy football & having fun.

:goodposting: Shouldn't you know a person before you group him in with a bunch of people you have disdain for? Perhaps if you read the first sentence of my post, you would have seen that I was happy for both Arizona and Tampa Bay and I wasn't ripping on them.

You're right. The Rays should have drawn 35K for all 82 home games and been a top 5 seller in Merch when they were losing 100 games a year and not even attempting to be good.

Most of these people are new fans... winning will of course attract more fans. Why would you jump onto the bandwagon of a team that's losing?

Even though I grew up in St. Louis, I became a Saints fan because I felt sorry for them during the Fans-with-bags-over-their-head era of the Aints, and decided they deserved at least one devoted fan. Years later, I still am. And yes, rooting for the Cards and Saints for so many years really tests a man's patience.

Giantsrule -

This is what a fanbase full of bandwaggoners does:

- Team goes to the WS...draws 50K

- Two years later...team stinks...draws < 500

- Two years later...makes WS again...draws 50K

- Two years later...back to being mediocre and drawing < 500

What fanbase is this? The Florida Marlins.

I noticed quite a few more alleged Giants fans this year after they had won a SB last year. I'm curious if they will be evident next year after fading this year. I'm sure they, as well as EVERY team in the league, have a certain percentage of bandwagon fans. Of course there is no scientific method which could place an accurate percentage of said bandwagon fans for any one team in order to compare it to another. So instead we claim one team has more bandwagon fans than another to somehow soften the reality that our team was not good enough this year.

Signed-

A Cowboys' fan :lmao:

I'll drop in here to answer this idiotic thread.

The Rays had 10, TEN straight seasons of 90+ losses...one of the longest streaks, if not the longest, in baseball history. You show me one other fanbase that would support that type of historic awfulness, and outside of Wrigley, I would call you a ####ing liar.

When the Rays decided to get down to the business of offering a good product to their fans, the fans decided to come out. You think YOUR city would support that sort of "entertainment".

The Bucs have sold out every game since 1997. The Lightning, a hockey team in Florida, are very well attended. This area supports its teams when they actually decide to give a flip.

Same with Arizona. Why would anybody sit there and watch that crap? 60 years of garbage. Get real.

I bet there will be a ton of AZ fans in Tampa. They saved up money to go all year by not buying tickets to any regular season games.
Nice attempt at humor, but U of P stadium has sold out every regular season game played there. The bandwagon filled up as soon as we got a stadium where you didn't melt watching a game. And the fans have been rewarded. Go Cards.

Aren't most fans going to be a little more excited when they have something to be excited about?

so... the Rays, right?

I would say Cardinals.

Two weeks ago, they needed 2 extensions to sell out their first home play-off game in history. It looked like a lot of the red in the crowd yesterday was 'fresh' red. :lmao:

Kudos to them though...didn't think they had the team to come close to pulling this off. Proved me wrong.

Capella, why is this an "idiotic thread?" It's actually a very legitimate question, particularly if you've ever seen the stands in a Tampa Bay Rays' game prior to 2008 and if you heard about the Cardinals' difficulty with selling out a first round playoff game.Again, this poll wasn't intended to bash fans of either franchise. But it's a serious question whenever you have a team with a history of filling up stadiums suddenly becoming the hottest tickets in town!

Where I live here in Socal, it's the bandwagon Steeler fans.

One neighbor for example, only had their Steeler flag out the super bowl winning year. A couple seasons later, when they didn't make the playoffs, they never had it out even once. :towelwave:

Since they built their new stadium 3 years ago the Cards have sold out every game. All you are talking about is how long it took to do it. So where is the comparision to the Rays??????????? I still don't get it. This is a very weak thread.
