Which Head Coaches get whacked or resign? (1 Viewer)

Any chance that Fox is gone after a disappointing season in Carolina?I don't know anything about the situation there and it seems like it would be unlikely, but he's the only other guy who hasn't been mentioned here who could even have a chance as I look at the standings.
I wouldn't think so. He's a very good head coach. QB play has been the biggest problem this year.
Yeah, I can see a coordinator shakeup in Carolina, but I think Fox stays as well.

Jeff Fisher will not be on the market.
Agreed. Sure looked like he'd be let go a couple of months ago though.
There is more to the Jeff Fisher issue than his win/loss record though, he and ownership/management don't see eye to eye (from what was reported this off-season anyway) and Fisher may end up gone for that reason more so than a lack of performance. That being said if Fischer hits the open market he would be off it in about 15 minutes.
I thought Fisher had a good relationship with ownership, to the point of them sticking by him over the past few years when the team was in disarray.Considering he's likely going to get Coach Of The Year consideration after the significant turnaround, plus the job he's done with Vince Young, I can't see him being shown the door.

I posted this in the Browns thread, but it makes sense here as well. It's a Cleveland Plain Dealer columnist's view on firing Crennel. Of course, it was written last week, so like many his view may have changed after watching the Browns wrap up a winless season in their division.

Have higher desire than fire-then-hire

Have higher desire than fire-then-hire

Browns stuck in cycle of untried coaches, so keep Crennel, but keep eye on Cowher

...

If it's Bill Cowher, my full attention.

...

Well, he might if his name were Cowher, but hold off on that. There's no guarantee he'd be available or that he'd come to Cleveland. Cowher is a separate but tantalizing issue.

...

Lerner could do worse than keep one eye on that and the other on Pittsburgh. With Cowher uncommitted after next season and with speculation that he might sit out 2007 to recharge his engines after 15 years as head coach, why not start next season with Crennel and see where fate takes all of them?
I would absolutely die laughing if Cowher ended up in Cleveland. The Browns would lose half their fans from their heads exploding.

Not to hijack the thread but does it seem like Leftwich may have been written off a bit too soon? Certainly yesterdays debacle against TEN will not have increased Garrard's chances of being a starter in JAX or elsewhere. If Leftwich was held back from starting on Del Rio's say so then maybe this kind of showing will cost him...

Leftwich will definitely be a starter somewhere next year. Leftwich>>>Garrard.

You might not know this, but Bill Cowher once played for and coached the Browns. I have a copy of the Jets/Browns double OT playoff win from January 1987. At one point they show a young Cowher, dressed in Browns garb, on the sidelines. He has long hair (about down to his shoulders) and takes a really good spit.

No more training wheels. No more learner's per mits.

It's not enough to say Romeo must go. That's not the answer. It's not even an answer.

Firings are only answers when followed by the right hire. So who's it going to be?

If it's Jeff Fisher, you have my attention.

If it's Bill Cowher, my full attention.

If it's change for the express purpose of bringing in another untried head coach in need of on-the-job training, don't bother. We've seen that movie before, no?

Unless Randy Lerner has a better idea -- and evidence of that isn't exactly teeming -- Crennel should start next season, his third, as head coach.
Well, the #1 problem right now is that the product is so bad that it is driving the fans away. The owner is losing millions in lost concessions revenue. I guarantee you that NO owner in the NFL will have patience when it comes to lost money. He is 0-4 against his rival, the Steelers. He is setting new lows for this franchise, such as 0-6 in the division for the first time. There are locker room divisions. It is a scenario that gets a coach fired at the end of year two. Hire-then-fire is wrong, but after two seasons you can also build a very strong case to let Crennel go.

Fortunately, Rooney rescued him from that mess.
What do you mean mess? The Browns were a winning franchise in the 1980s.If anything, it should be the Steelers' heads that are exploding because they needed to go to the Browns to find a coach to save them.

They've been pretty much a mess since 1990. Pittsburgh hired Cowher in 1992. They didn't "need" to go to the Browns. They just brought one of their own home.ETA: BTW, he was with the Chiefs when Pittsburgh hired him.

I know he was with the Chiefs, hence the qualifier "if anything"...

As an Eagles fan, I hope Coughlin stays.

Word is that the Giants' front office is timid about firing Coughlin because he was Wellington Mara's last major football decision before he died. I'm glad to see spinelessness in a division rival's front office.

I don't think so... Steve Smith missed playing time. Delhomme is probably on the outs, and he has missed playing time. And with the defection of Witherspoon to the Rams coupled with 'the walking concussion' Dan Morgan's playing time - there are plenty of reasons to explain their lackluster season. MeShawn has actually played much better than I thought he would.

Coughlin I hope and pray is gone - he has earned it.
:bowtie: ;) :wall:
Speaking as a non-Giants fan. I love watching Coughlin's sideline demeanor. Talk about wearing your emotions on your sleeve. I find him wilding entertaining. He needs to be retained.
I can't see any possible scenario by which Tom Coughlin remains with the Giants. He'll be gone within 24hours of the end of their season. "Entertaining on the sideline" does not equal a good NFL head coach. The Giants were considered a lock to make the playoffs and had a legitimate shot at the Super Bowl this season. I know they have had injuries but good coaches find ways to win even without some of their starters (see Bill Belichick). Coughlin has absolutely no respect from his team. They criticize him publicly and find his goofy rules and schedule comical. You don't see Parcells' players saying "we got out coached" in the media. His sideline antics only add to the lack of respect he gets. He does not appear to be in control of anything. Anytime there is a call against his team or someone makes a mistake he drops to his knees, rolls his eyes, looks totally frustrated and shocked. It sends the wrong message. Get pissed off, rip into somebody on the sideline, whatever. But stay in control, show confidence in your self and your teams ability to overcome and find a way to win. The guy has lost it and needs some time off. I don't think this is the last we'll see of Coughlin as a head coach. It is absolutely the last we'll see of him with the G-Men and I don't think he's in the NFL next season. He needs to get away from football for a while and come back when he is ready.

Safe money's on Mora Jr. He absolutely decapitated himself this week.
If Gruden gets whacked - maybe they whack Mora - and then Gruden can be reunited with Atlanta Falcons President/GM Rich McKay.
McKay left Tampa because he couldn't see eye-to-eye with Gruden.
